Title: Hunting problem :o(
Post by: antrosser on August 29, 2008, 02:32:54 PM
I have hunting problem which i cannot seem to get to the bottom of...doesnt do it with the cold start, but as soon as the engine gets warm, then it hunts. Dont think it is an airleak (many garages think it is an electrical fault).

Its not the idle sensor as have changed that to no avail, so running out of options. What else can i do to find the fault!?

Cheers guys.

Hunts? What, like foxes? lol.
Seriously tho it will probably help if you list your mods etc, mine does this if i disconnec tthe air pump so it could be a loose connectin unless you do not have an air pump that is

probably not then. Oh well, i noticed on FDUK you\'ve had it sitting for a while, might be worth trying new spark plugs bud

Try checking all the sensors incase of being dirty and check the map sensor is on properly, failing that check the sparks and then take for a long drive to see if it gets better ?

One of the other threads was saying that the TPS could cause similar symptoms?

On mine - if i have the air con on it causes it to hunt on idle but only once its fully up to temp. its a right pain turning the aircon off when you are stuck in a traffic jam - just the time you need it!

Si.

Mine does this, and has done for years: since i\'ve gone single turbo in fact. Simple solution for me was to unplug the idle valve! No more hunting :)

Lol seems like it is a common problem then!!! What is the TPS?

It got flooded the other day so had the sparks out, checked and cleaned then...runs perfectly on cold start which is puzzling!!

The map sensor is currently bodged on as i had a 3bar map sensor on...but of course had to run the old map sensor until its mapped, so had to crimp the wires into a chocolate block...may be the map sensor may not be working :S Would this cause it to hunt?

Dont think my air con is on either. It can stop of its own account, but as soon as the fan kicks in or something, it sets it off again for a while!! Thats why the garages seemed to think it was electrical. Revving it sets if off too. Cant win!! lol

Oh yea, and unfortunately even hunts with the idle control valve out!! lol

If you wanna come down i can setup up for the 3 bar map sensor. At least i can do that!!

You TPS may need looking at.

But if it hunts without the idle valve plugged in then there\'s something like an air leak, or possibly the map sensor, but i wouldn\'t have thought so.

It can hunt if the ECU and idle speed are not matched in their respective settings.
What happens is that the ecu say\'s the idle should be at it\'s setting and the manual adjust is overriding it,so they are in effect fighting each other.

Carl

The idle sensor is on the plenum toward the back...near the map sensor :o) So hopefully getting it mapped may sort the idling problem?

Such a common problem, had this on mine after i rebuilt it, could not find the reason at all, so as already said, unplug the idle valve, and ajust your idle manually, just means the ecu is not controlling the idle.

Hmmm ok, hopefully that will fix it :o) Is it the throttle position screw you need to adjust to control where you want the car to idle at?

Altho it still hunts when the idle control valve is off?

TPS, or air leak.

More than likely TPS. When the car is cold the TPS voltage is high enough to make it idle nicely. Once warm the voltage drops and then you get your hunt problem.

Check TPS with the sensor check page found in the ECT section on the PFC hand controller. Look at VTA1 and VTA2. VTA1 should be between 0.75 & 1.25 when the car is at full temp but off. Throttle in all the way and it should be 4.0 or more but never higher than VTA2 or on 5.0

Check these, adjust if need be then let us know. If the problem continues then we can move on to something els. 1 problem at a time.

Cheers for the input :) Nikp disconnected the Idle control valve, and it is working fine :o) no more hunting problem!! Also the idle is alot lower at around 1k where as before was about 1250!

I love these websites as every one is so friendly and willing to help other members out :o) so thank you all!!!
