Title: What have I done???
Post by: tonyn on March 23, 2004, 10:29:42 AM
I bought my rx just 3 weeks ago and am very very happy:cool but after reading all the problems eveyone seems to be having Im wondering if ive done the right thing. Engine rebuilds, heating problems etc. etc. someone tell me its not all horror stories.
I use it as an everyday car and dont mind the high running costs but Ive wiped out all my savings on it and a rebuild will wipe me out :( .

I felt a bit like that when i got mine.  But the best advice ive had is just drive it to enjoy it.  If its gonna blow, it\'ll blow.

Its probably not as bad as its made out.  All car forums are like this regardless of marque as people only talk about things when something goes wrong or advice is needed.

We would soon be pretty fed up if everyone posted each day the car was running just fine.

As a side though, its probably not a good idea to have no backup fund at all so you probably should start saving :rollin

Agree with Lee, running an RX-7 unfortunately is a unpredictable business, they are great cars but unfortuantely can be expensive when they go wrong so its wise to have some money ready

How many miles has it done ?

its only done 20,000 on an already rebuilt engine so hopefully it should be ok for a few miles yet.
Any suggestions on what mods I should start with? i.e Induction Kit, turbo timer etc.

Cool

Personally I would get it checked at a specialist to make sure its not running lean etc without you knowing about it, thats what kills the engines.

Whats mods does it have at the moment ?
Does it have a boost gauge ?

Its totally standard at the moment. Thats one of the main reasons I bought it.

First things are

Induction Kit
Free flowing/louder Exhaust (backbox)
New ECU (very important to ensure aftern these mods you don\'t run lean)
Larger Downpipe
CAT Replacement pipe

that will do for starters :)

Enjoy !

Mod sensibly and you won\'t damage the reliability of your engine :)

The ECU is the best mod you will ever buy cos it lets you safely mod other bits

Tony,
I have to be one of the more boring swines on here. My car arrived here in august. I\'ve used it every day since and have covered 6000miles now. It\'s only missed a beat once a while ago (fuel starvation problem?) and since then no problem. I don\'t thrash the car but then again I\'m seldom overtaken and get an average of 17mpg. It\'s comfortable cruising at 140 and certainly livens up my journeys to work.

Best of luck with yours, Tony. I\'ve read of some horror stories on here but think of an engine problem as a chance to instal a 20b.:D

Hi, I have been driving rotarys for over 12 years. I am now on my 3rd RX7, and I can say that they are very reliable provided you are prepared to look after them.

I now own a 2001 RS model, had 1978 Series 1, and a 1992 Series 6. The series 6 was far more reliable than the "simple" series 1, however I payed very careful attention to the engine department because of the enormous amount of heat that is in the engine bay.

The only problems I had with my series 6 were cooling problems. I never overheated the car (if you do, normally the housings warp). The top radiator hoses are known to fail after 80,000 kms, the air separation tanks splits, and the filler cap body distorts over time, causing a leak around the filler cap.

My recommendation is to replace all the cooling hoses, replace the filler cap body with the newer metal ones that mazda supply, replace the overflow tank, and get the system flushed every 2 years or so and you won\'t have any further overheating problems for another 80,000 kms (sorry we\'re on the metric system).

You have to realise these cars are over 10 years old in most cases and those hoses are exposed to big temperatures.
Also most import cars haven\'t been looked after too well :-(

Most of my cooling system related components failed within a few months of each other (except the radiator and water pump, they were still ok after 100,000 kms).

If you can, get into the habit of inspecting the cooling system every two weeks for signs of problems. The tell tale sign was the smell of a small whiff of antifreeze.

Also get a turbo timer installed.

My 2001 RS, runs dramitically cooler than the Series 6 did, so they have made improvements on the later cars.

Series 7\'s (1995 to 1999) have metal fillercap bodies too.

You should get at least 100,000 miles out of engine, provided its been maintained.

Cheers
Marcus
