Title: why do we love our fd\'s?
Post by: pearl_rex on August 23, 2008, 05:44:16 PM
what is it that makes you love your rex? for me its the look on scooby drivers faces when you kill them :chat also how much attention it gets, ive been working on it on the drive quite alot recently and no word of a lie about 20 people have stopped and given me 100 q\'s about it!! it may break alot...and i mean ALOT lol but i still love it more than any other car by a long long long shot!

so im just interested in why everyone else is in love with theirs?

ste :cheers

For me the FD still looks amazing for such an old design! Looks different and better then a lot of the newer performance cars out there, even has a super car kind of look about it :D Also like the fact that there are not that many on the road which makes it unique and has people wondering what it is lol.... I\'ve had my FD mistaken for a new Ferrari and a new Porsche! The performance, sound and driving characteristics are awesome, everytime I drive it it brings a smile to my face, feels like a REAL sports car. You can drive an FD slow and still have fun... what other cars can you do that in? Also like the fact that I\'ve seen off a lot of other higher perfomance cars in a straight line as well as some Ferrari\'s, 911 Turbos and an Aston Martin... oh and not forgetting the biker boys :Thumbs-up... above all for me it\'s the heart of the FD, the Rotary engine which really does it for me... such a unique design which is different from the rest, something so small which can push out so much power and embarrass those V8\'s and V10\'s! yes the Rotary is thirsty and fragile blah blah blah BUT with the right engine build and a good map (very important) it\'s soooo adictive... I don\'t think anything can beat the sound and driving style a Rotary can give :driving

I think FDs are loved so much as they are a proper sports car with a proper engine that has turbos rather than the newer sports cars that are heavily restricted with loads of emmission stuff and less powerful engines. I think its cause cause they are amazing to look at, but not hugely expensive to buy, plus there aren\'t many of them, my FC is the only 1 around where I live, Haven\'t seen another FC been driven around near me or past me unless I go visit Prof

For me it just has the right dimensions, light weight long hood short backside.  It\'s stance is wonderful too look at from any angle.  The 50/50 weight distribution with a good amount of power gives you a feeling when driving that very few other cars do.  My Crossfire SRT6 is close but fails in cornering compared to the RX7.  The fact that very few are around even makes it more special.  I bought mine with 7 miles in Sept 1992.  It is sleeping at the moment but will awake better than ever next year.  Doing a full restore, from the suspension too a brand new motor.

Maybe one of the most beautiful  cars ever produced! Certainly one of the most financialy depressing too own known too man.
You should never start a sentence with the word but,so i won\'t,but an RX7 is unique and always will be! Thats what makes the breed special and they stand out from the rest!
Looks, engine, design and character, the Rex has the lot! Can\'t be beaten!
Fact!!!
Oh and mine especially is ubber sexy!!!:yes

Yeah the design of the car is superb and the rotary engine sound is unlike anything else. People just love the look of the car, if I\'m cruising anywhere on a bypass and they overtake they are always glued to the windows looking at the car and trying to decide what it is, I\'ve had kids walk across a really busy road just to take pics using camera phones, anybody stops me and has a chat about the car which is ace.
The handling is fantastic, the pickup from the sequential turbos are great, the ****pit is brilliant and the performance even for a standard car is sensational. Most of all though there are 3 superb forums where people are happy to give advice, guidance and technical help which has lead me to do all the work on the car myself.

The only bad points are that it is a 15 year old car and bits are starting to fail, there are too many nice aftermarket bits that I convince myself I must have and the final point is when you do tell people it is a Mazda I think they are disappointed.

Unique Rotary sound, awsome Rotary style... enough said!

Because it looks fantastic (and I\'m shallow!), it\'s ridiculously loud (which matters since I\'m already half deaf), it\'s stupidly fast (which is important cos I\'ve spent too long on two wheels to drive sensibly now) and you never get tired of explaining exactly what a "Wankel" is to people.Thirteen year-old kids think it\'s "sick" and "shady" (which means good apparently), and they\'re the ultimate test of whether something\'s cool or not!

Can\'t argue with a thing said about the car so far, and I think pete sparrow\'s second sentence is so true with regards to my new ownership of the car.
Before buying the RX7 I tried and was prepared to buy a car 3 times what I paid for the RX7 but if you drive the RX then within a day of trying most other high performance cars you just seem to find there is something about the whole package, speed, handling and looks that Mazda by luck or judgement got right.

Because it makes me wee a little with excitment every time I see it.

It\'s beautiful, rapid, sounds gorgeous, effortlessly prett, timelss (There was one at the uk motorshow this year - it didn\'t look in the slightest bit out of place) and genuinely different.

The noise too! I get bored of CDs after a while, but I\'m not the slightest bit bored of that nurspec! :D
Especially through tunnels, and when I chop it down....maybe thats why I use so much fuel!:2Rolleyes

What more could be said about this piece of history I have always want one from seeing my first FB when I was a kid on holiday. Now I have got my FD it just put a smile on my face when I go out in it or just looking at it on the drive or road, when it comes to driving it from the sound of the twin rotors coupled to the twin turbos spinning up and the way it pulls there is nothing to touch it and when it comes to the looks where do you start it is really beautiful from any angle. Last thing to say about the car dreams can come true when you drive the FD.:Thumbs-up

+1

OK... honestly... driving on the street. there are many other cars which can do this alot better. But I never have a bad feeling about that. All the noises and forces from the clutch, the suspension, the exhaust, the turbo. Thats all what is fascinating me. So I never get bored sitting in it.

And about the looks...
For me it is the most beautiful car ever produced. When I come out of my house. And I see the car standing in my slip road.
There is a feeling like.
in love ... omg... its real. then I have to take a deep breath.
Maybe I´m one of the special guys. But for me it is not only the best choice for the money.
I´m really in love!

Hehe....nice storys guys. Alot of love in this thread.

Iv only ever owned an FD3S. Its my first car & the only type of car I like to drive. I dont under stand how all the parts of a piston work, theres to much bull **** in those things. I used to hate cars untill I moved to NZ 7 years ago.

In South Africa all there ever were was euro trash cars. I hate them all. When I moved here I heard and saw the FD3S for the first time. I could not belive Mazda made such awsome cars. I just had to find out what it was. I had never heard of rotary engines before. Iv always been into aircraft and always understood the workings of a jet engine but never a cars engine untill I discoverd the rotary. I love these cars so much because of there simplistic engine design.

(If it aint a rotor it aint a motor).

On a nother note I love to **** off V8 owners here in NZ. My plate is V8-TZR and they hate it. Once I raced a fully worked Ford Boss V8 that had thousand spent on it. He lives in my area and his plate is BowDwn....hahaha more like bend over and get an ass kicking. After racing him I never saw him for 3 months. Then one day as I was waiting to turn onto a main road he came passed. He recognised my FD & was still ****ed off about beeing beaten....he reved his car in an angry maner as he went passed. Thats why I love my RX7.

Now Im just waiting for my brothers turbonetics T61 supra to be finished so I can race that. I will post the vid when the time comes.

awesome replies guys :D and i can honestly agree and relate to everything thats been said!! especially the feeling you get when your in a shopping center and happen to stroll past a window, look out and see your rx7 sat there knowing its probably the only rx7 for miles around!! ive caught people stood around it taking pics and checking the whole car over lol, and as for people staring when your driving, i think the only other cars that get the same ammount of people staring has to be ferrari\'s and lambo\'s!! and i dont think theres another car that makes grown men shrink to the age of a toddler again when they see/hear it!!

the only KIND OF bad thing i can say is that old people HATE IT lol. too noisy and anti-social....but a dab on the throttle usually drowns out their moaning :)

cheers for the replies guys, got a really good thread forming here i think!! :cheers

lol i think thats one of my favorite questions to answer ever! ;)

me and the mrs went out to our local park today for abit of a picnic and theres a sort of road that loops around inside the park for people to just have a pleasure drive around, i parked the car on this road while we went and sat on the grass and the amount of people who couldnt help but stare at it as they strolled past was unreal! and ive never really noticed til\' now but the car does still look absolutely brand new, if they were to re-release the fd im damn sure it would sell by the thousands!! it wouldnt look out of place sat in a group of brand new sports cars!!

what a brilliant car :burnout

It\'s the engine that does it for me, that second turbo coming in and ripping your face off through til 9k is bliss... And the rarity factor too. Can\'t wait to have her over here with me soon!

:evillaugh Im realy looking forward to doing it. Heres a few details on the supra. Its a 94 auto. It dose not have any internal work done to it. The build consists of a Single turbo, manifold, Link ECU, Larger injectors & fuel pump plus reg, cam gears, FMIC, some gauges and probly a few more bits here and there.

I dont know much about supras but my bro says the auto ones cant take more than 350kw @ the wheels before the auto box lets go. So his goal is 350kw or 470whp. It should be tuned on the same dyno as my FD was.

My low boost according to that dyno is 470whp. So I will be racing him on the low setting. My car weighed in at 1165kg with a 1/4 tank. So around 1300kg with me and a full tank. Supras are around 1450-1500kg. So he will need all the torque he can get.

Im very exited and cant wait to see what happens.

I love RX7\'s

I love the way boy racers dont even bother. If you were in a lowered ford iron, they would all be after you.

Main things i like about it apart from the looks, handling and performance, is the exclusivity of it. Fair play to other drivers choosing the evo\'s, skylines supra\'s and scoobies, but it\'s nice to be apart from the crowd. To be daring enough to chose a car where the engine needs a rebuild during it\'s lifespan. But the dividend\'s sure do pay off later on!

Nope, plastic splitter - the thing that made me feel even more proud is that on the exterior, save for the spoiler, it was near identical to mine.
Bias aside, I can\'t honestly think of another car from the same era that\'s aged so well. Although to be fair, I suppose that generation of the design is from 1999.
