OK I\'m on my 2nd S3 and 3rd Rx7 and am planning on rebuilding one of the 12a engines over the winter months but am considering fitting carbs to the engine, which ones should I go for, and what will I need to complete the conversion parts wise and fitting wise.
Also when I\'m rebuilding the engine I\'m very tempted to port the engine nothing too serious mild port or possibly an extended port, will this have any negative effects on the carbs other than poor fuel consumption and low power under 4K rpm if I went for the extended port.
you want a weber 48IDA if you are porting the motor
i may just so happen to have a new one for sale! (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6548&page=12) half way down the page
you will also need to upgrade your fuel pump add a regulator, consider running premix or running OMP lines into the carb / manifold, new manfold and acc cable set up other than that you are good to go, a 48 IDA can be used from a stock motor upto a ported motor with the right jets etc these can also be machined to 51mm (as in my post)

would I still need to upgrade my fuel pump add a regulator, consider running premix or running OMP lines into the carb / manifold, new manfold and acc cable set up if I put it on an unported 12a?
How much are you looking for the 48IDA and approximately how much would it cost to buy a complete kit? or source the parts to complete the job?
if you change the carb from the stock Nikki you will need to look at the mods above,
i currenty have a 45DCOE on mine which may suit your stock 12a better just depends on
A) budget
B) what future mods you are thinking about
i made the mistake of buying the 45DCOE then making further mods
my 45DCOE already has the OMP line mod so you would just need a pump, regulator (£100?) and manifold (£150 new, £50 - £80 second hand)
if you are unsure you may be better contacting a vendor to quote you for the work
Weber 45DCOE £230 (Done 5k)
Weber 48IDA £350 (new)

Waiting on a couple of £ coming in so can\'t do anything till that arrives, done a few private jobs and ain\'t got paid yet so when they coff up I\'ll start buying.
Also waiting on my second JEGS review at work so will hopefully have a couple of grand coming in from back dated pay, been waiting 3 months now on the result and I know I met the grade they are just taking forever to get back to me.
Would love to do a tripple rotor using the parts from the spare 12a with tripple carbs Howard rotary do a drive in and drive out service but can\'t justify spending the guts of £7K just to get slightly poorer performance than I currently get from my FD. If I could get the parts and do the work myself for a couple of grand that would be worth while, I\'ve two 12a engines so I could butcher one and buy a modified tripple rotor eshaft (well thats the dream)
Reality will probably be 12a with carbs and ported, hopefully that will get me close to 180 - 200 bhp and give a few people a surprise at the track. Car will also be lightend over the winter fiberglass replacements for the panels whilst keeping the stock look although will replace wheel hubs, wheels, and breaks with parts from an FD. My experiance from FBs the stock break set up is sh!t. :driving
stock set up is pretty good on a s3 (vented front and rear) obviously these won\'t compare greatly to a FD
i\'am coverting mine to a FC 4 pot set up although it doesn\'t need it at the mo it is always better to have more stopping power!
i would check you current set up as with all RX7 brakes can go bad
the only reason I\'m using the breaks from an FD is there are a few being broken close to me so I should get them at a reasonable price and very few people will be looking for the wheel hubs so may as well take them too. I prefer to have breaks that are too big rather than too small :)
The chassis on the S3 that I have is rotten so stripped out the interior, taking the engine out this week hopefully as well as the rad, fan and gearbox then and the shell and running chassis is going, got a buyer for it hes looking the passanger door, lights and indicators, so said he\'d take it off my hands salvage what he wants off of it and sell the rest on as scrap metal. Suits me and the money will go towards paying off my other S3 :)
Then the work begins :)
great stuff agree bigger brakes are always better, just saying there not that bad (remember these are over 20year old now!) mine stops better than my GF\'s 16v turbo fiat coupe

Very true but never trusted the breaks on it and rarely went above 70mph (not that I would on a public road) drove it a few times on a small local track but it was very hard on the breaks which I was on most of the time as they weren\'t the best, should have taken the front breaks off and got them tested but hind sights a wonderful thing and it would have been a waste anyway (cos of the chassis).
