Title: Hello....
Post by: mark-ashley on August 21, 2008, 12:56:14 PM
Hello all....

Been meaning to get on here for a while but due to work internet restrictions it\'s taken me a little longer than intended...

I bought my RX7 about a year a go from a guy called Gareth in Crawley who i beleive posted on here from time to time.

I love it it, the car is amazing !

Anyways, i\'m sure i\'ll be posting asking questions on here from time to time, more than likely when something goes wrong with the car !

As far as i know there haven\'t been any major mods on it, what i do know is as follows:

Re-Amemiya AD Facer N1 front bumper
18" GT-7 2 Piece alloys
Kakimoto Racing stainless steel exhaust
Approx 0.8 bar boost

Some tit bashed the front bumper in and due to serious financial restrictions i\'m getting a new bumper from Replikit, the vanquish front bumper...

I have read on here various things about replikit but i like to try and keep an open mind, i did order one from IBK in bournemouth but that turned out to be a really bad fitting, fair play to them, they did refund me without any hassle.

On order i have some new spark plugs and a K&N filter from Clive and also bought a Bailey Motorsport dump valve which i\'ll fit when the car comes out of the body shop.

As i said, i love the car, it\'s brilliant and i hope to get it to some of the upcoming meets and shows...

I\'ve attached a few pics of the car that i downloaded from Newera as i don\'t have any of my own at hand, currently at work waiting for the phone to ring to see if my new kit fits !

Enough rambling !

I\'ve been lucky enough to drive a few pretty good r/w drive cars, all belonging to my brother who is a bit of a car nut, they include:

E46 M3
Ferrari 360 Modena
Maserati 3200 GT

I also managed to write off a Suzuki Cappucino so after that i kind of learnt my lessons with r/w drive cars !

I have the back of this twitch on me a couple of times in the rain bt nothing too serious !

Nice \'7 you have there guv :)

The RE A front end is lovely, shame to loose it.  Was it not reparable at the bodyshop?  Shame the insurance didnt cover to replace it.

Thats also a nice list of cars your bro has owned!  You should get him to fork our for an RE A one for you ;)

Chris

Thanks !

Unfortunately not, it was proper wrecked....

The insurance gave me 1500 quid less 500 excess so that left me with a grand...

I had a MK 4 Golf 1.8 20v turbo to sell, put that in to be mot\'s and it failed on a rear caliper, 300 quid to get it through the MOT so down to 700 quid...

Sold that for 2K , paid off a few debts and got the mazda serviced and MOT\'d, then the clutch hose went, not an expensive thing to fix tho so not so bad....

Someone else hit the rear quarter of the car (drove off again) and when i bought it the bonnet was slightly lighter than the rest of the car so i\'m having to get the whole front end painted plus the damage to the rear quarter, that\'s costing me 1250 quid just for the paint and labour !

Long and the short is that i am now seriously low on funds, a direct replacement for the bumper from new era would have cost me just shy of 800 quid.

Add that to the paint job and your looking at just over 2k which i just don\'t have...

Am hoping that the bumper i get from replikit won\'t be too much hassle to fit, if it is, i\'ll be sending it back and posting in the wanted section for an alternative !!!

Hello Mark, nice looking car mate, shame about your funds though as the re-am looks v.nice. whats the vanquish like?
Title: Hello....
Post by: mark-ashley on August 21, 2008, 02:17:09 PM
This is what the vanquish bumper looks like

http://www.replikit.co.uk/images/kits/mazda/rx7vf.jpg

It\'s known also as a "vanish" kit, it\'s not too disimilar really, just sharper edges....

I like the 99 spec lights too, think it will finish it off nice providing the thing fits OK...

IF i could replace it with the RE-AM then beleive me i would !!!

Welcome, wotcher and all that! Car looks lovely, shame it\'s been marmalised so soon into ownership. Hopefully it\'ll be a good fit, the new bumper. Some good cars your brother\'s had, there, I can see where you would\'ve struggled going to a Cappuccino from a 360 Modena, must\'ve seemed like a real beast after that ol Italian nag! :Giggle

Picking up the car tonight, woop woop ! Can\'t wait, been without it for over 2 weeks ! Unfortunately not gonna get time to put the air filter, spark plugs and fuel filter in, but at least it will all be looking lovely and shiny ! Will post up pics as soon as i have taken some, not going to bother today as it will be dark when i pick it up, hope it all looks ok....

So, i got the car back and the body shop said it was a bitch of a job, it looks sweet it has to be said, will get some pics up shortly, have been in Cornwall all weekend so not had a chance to takeany pics just yet...

Only downside is now i need to adjust the slam bar somehow as air is getting under the bonnet creating lift, not good.....

The kit doesn\'t sit high enough to push air over the bonnet, if i raise the kit it will ruin all the lines the body shop toiled over getting spot on !

Anyone else come across this ?

If you\'re talking about the way the bonnet seems to flap and rattle up and down when you get up to speed, I think that\'s normal. Certainly both of my FDs have done it, I think it\'s cos the alloy bonnet\'s so light. Not had one come open yet (fingers crossed) but it does look slightly unnerving till you just stop noticing it......

Thanks for your replies....

I\'m going back to the body shop on Saturday to adjust the slam panel so the bonnet sits just below the new front end...

A piece of advice for anyone thinking of fitting a new kit on their car, go for a rebutable make otherwise you will find yourself paying a small price for a bumper and the same cost if not more getting the damn thing to fit....

Is the replikit as bad as ibk kits then lol
I have bought the cheapest i could find as mine is on the track car so its only got two bolts and tiewraps holding it on!and was not so worried about a perfect fit.

The IBK kit was an extremely bad kit, so much so that we didn\'t even bother putting it on, just sent it straight back and as i mentioned earlier, they gave me a full refund with no arguments which is a great way to do business, fair play to them for that....

Lets just say the replikit required a lot of attention to get it to fit right, all good if you are doing the job yourself, not so good if you are paying a body shop, it cost me an extra days labour which i could have done without.

100% guaranteed fitment is a bit of a bold statement in my opinion although, for an extra 100 quid they offered to fit the bumper for me, would be interested to hear from anyone who has gone down that route, i chose not to as when it was offered to me the whole front end of my car was in bits and definately not in fit state to drive from Merton to Harlow....

Incidentally, the guys who did the job for me have been in this business almost longer than i have been alive so i would say they are more than capable of fitting a bumper !

Now it\'s on it looks fantastic and the guys at he bodyshop did a great job but i doubt they will ever let me put another kit on my car unless it is a genuine item, such as RE AM, C-West etc...

I\'ll get some pictures up this weekend as i\'ve not had a chance to take any.

Last bits to do this weekend is fit the K&N air filter, new plugs, fuel filter and dump valve, fingers crossed for no rain !!!

So, here are a couple of pics of my poor little rex with it\'s bumper mashed up and a ding in the wing...

The bumper doesn\'t look too bad but i promise you, it\'s mashed and held together with an array of strategically fastened cable ties !!!

And here\'s what it looks like now, i\'m pretty pleased, was a bitch of a job but it looks great, and i\'ve fixed the flapping bonnet too !
Title: Hello....

Does look good now! That bumpers well aggressive looking. How did you sort the flappy bonnet problem out?
Title: Hello....
Post by: mark-ashley on September 14, 2008, 02:54:17 PM
I had to take the bonnet catc off, shave a bit off the bracket and drill the hole the catch bolts onto so the bonnet sits slightly lower...

Looks reall nice now, very aggresive as you say...

I\'m now fighting with a blow off valve and i\'m a bit stuck, i took off the Charge Releif Valve and replaced it with the baileys motorsport valve, i get no whoosh but i can hear pressure being dumped into the air box....

Have a taken the wrong valve off, should i have removed the ABV valve ?

Hope someone can help cause i\'m proper worried i\'m gonna **** the engine up !!!
Title: Hello....
Post by: mark-ashley on September 14, 2008, 03:01:16 PM
I had to take the bracket off that attaches the bonnet mach to the body, shave the top of the bracket a bit and drill the hole on it the mech bolts onto so i could lower it, were talking a gnats arse lower but it did the trick and kept the lines which is a result...

At the moment i am fighting with a BOV, i think i have put it in the wrong place, i removed the charge relief valve and replave it with the BOV, now it\'s dumping into the ari box, think i should have taken the ABV off and replaced that with the BOV, i\'ve cut the bloody hose now too, nightmare.....

Any ideas what i might have done wrong ?
Title: Hello....
Post by: Nik da Greek on September 15, 2008, 01:37:24 PM
Yeah, I think the charge relief valve wants to stay as it is, and the BOV should replace the air bypass valve. At least, thats how mine\'s set up, I just used the spigot from the Y-pipe that the ABV was plumbed into as the take-off for the dump valve and blocked the now redundant hole on th e air box. Well, induction kit, airbox, whatever you\'re running

It\'s a really crap photo, but hopefully shows what I mean;

As you can see (hopefully!) the CRV is still where it should be (red circle) but the dump valve comes off the union n the Y-pipe formerly used by the ABV. HTH, and hope it\'s the correct way of doing it. I\'ve been running like this for two years or so with no trouble, so it seems ok!

I spoke to Clive and he said to just pull the pipe off the air box and that should do the trick as the waste was dumping straight in the airbox, sounded like a cow mooing with emphazemia, however, i\'ve seen a few pics now, yours included and the CRV is still in place...

The problem i have now is i cut the bloody hose as i couldn\'t get the CRV off it so i need a new hose to go from the airbox to the CRV...

Have tried to get a part from Mazda in Docklands but so far they have been bloody useless.

Im sure i\'m not going to do any damage, might give Clive a quick call and see if he has a hose in stock !
Title: Hello....
Post by: Nik da Greek on September 15, 2008, 02:31:12 PM
The Mooooooing is an airpump "feature" that you can end up with under certain combinations of filter and restriction in the pipes. You need a silenced filter for the airpump, whic is why it comes off from a little separate compartment filled with foam in the standard airbox. Aftermarket induction kits usually come with a little restricotr that goes in the hose that causes the problem, but if you buy the kit secondhand, this is often missing. You can make your own from any kinda bung with a hole through it, but it needs to have an internal diameter of about 6mm or so (I think the standard hose is about 19mm, 22mm something like that?). Loads of threads about airpump mooing around, if you do a search you\'ll probably find one which explains it better than me. I think I\'ve got a photo around somewhere of the hose you need the restrictor in, hang about...
Title: Hello....
Post by: Nik da Greek on September 15, 2008, 02:33:36 PM
Here you go...

The one circled in red is the one that needs the restrictor in it. I made mine from a hose joiner of the right diameter for the pipe, with a bit of silicone vacuum hose Sikaflex\'ed into it so the engine couldn\'t suck it in lol
Title: Hello....
Post by: mark-ashley on September 15, 2008, 03:04:22 PM
Well, since i took the pipe off the airbox the mooing has stopped so i can only assume that where i have put the BOV on, it\'s dumping into the air box...

I\'m 99.9% sure that if i put the CRV valve back in place and remove the Air bypass valve and replace with the BOV i shoud be all good, however, if the mooing continues i\'ll be following your anti mooing suggestions !
