The RX8 was on fifth gear last night up against a 350Z hardly fair seeing as the Z is 5k more and I bet if you spent that 5k on a turbo or supercharger the 8 would whip the Zs arse :spank.
Anyway here\'s a link to the clip http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/255107.html
And I\'m sure the 350z has more power then the RX8? 230 hp vs 280 hp ?
Yep 228 vs 309 but a superchanger can add an easy 80bhp :Thumbs-up.
Its not always the power they are interested in, if the RX8 aims at the 350z market it has to be prepared to be compared, its in the Audi TT and others bracket. Its like saying you cant compare the Aston Martin with the Porsche a common comparison.
they had the rx8 goin round the top gear track a while back n it was quicker then the 350z (if i rem correct)

As much as 228! My hi power barely squeezes 208. Always sick of car comparisons when it comes to the 8. I love the wheels off my 8 but sadly it really isn\'t a powerful car. Only come back I can throw at the Z is I wanna see it take an 8 on a tight winding track. Pretty confident the 8 could claw in the win there.
8 would win down on windy roads and track hands down.
Test drove a 350z for Maz before she got a 8 and it was crap, too heavy, handled like poop and wasnt quick.

No, the 350Z, E46 M3 and mark 1 RX-8 got exactly the same time of 1.31.8
I had a little drive in an rx8. Was actually shocked at how slow it pulled off, i thought the handbrake was on lol
either way - with a 5k less price tag and a far better / prettier car, I\'d go for the RX despite it being just over a second slower....
Done #;o)

It will be slower than a 7 due to less power but you\'ll be surprised how quickly it picks up speed it just has very linear and smooth power delivery so it\'s deceiving how quick you pick up speed.
It was also a lot less new than a 7 or even a Z  .
Interesting thread. I used to own an RX-7 which is why I\'m a member here. After selling it I went and bought a 350z which I still own. I\'m actually looking at selling it to buy an RX-8. The 350z will outperform the RX-8 in almost every department on paper, but my experience of owning one has left me wanting. It\'s too heavy. That\'s it\'s major flaw. Having two seats is becomming an issue for me too (due to personal circumstances of course), so the RX-8 ticks lots of boxes. Plus, I love wankel engines. But I just wish the RX-8 had MORE POWER.
When you put the RX-8\'s pretty awful full consumption figures and power delivery into focus you have to wonder why Mazda didnt produce a turbo version. It would have had a rather minor impact on the running costs of the vehicle but would have provided a far more appealing package. Oh well.
What is wrong with the power delivery on the 8? It\'s very linear. There is no step or sudden rush.
It doesn\'t "deliver" enough! Not only that, but being a rotary, you have to thrash the nuts off it to experience any real power - and that\'s mostly what makes the petrol consumption figures so terrible. It would definitely benefit from a turbo.

Its not the fastest off the line but when you get to second gear 8,500rpm right up the gears it really goes!!!! 1st gear it not worth having.
8s do luv revs they seem much happier right up there, saw on a jap dvd a guy driving round a circuit taking right past 9k quite happily
What\'s nice about the RX8 is that rev it over 6,000rpm you hear feel the engine change it turns it a different car not many 23k cars have a rev counter that goes upto 10,000rpm
Can you rev them still that high with a supercharger fitted I wonder
What I like about the Rx8 is that you can bang it off the limiter for a day without hassle and then potter home at 70mph on the motorway without a problem. There aren\'t many cars that you can do that with. I\'m half convinced that revving it is better for it, prevents the carbon build up that can stick down seals and stuff. A day at the track certainly does things like stop the third port sticking at high revs and generally makes the car feel livelier. The management system is adaptive and adjusts to track driving giving sharper throttle response and better mid-range. It messes with your front tyres though but small price to pay!

Sorry to DP but California Style\'s S/C RX8 has no trouble running at 9000rpm. The supercharger\'s boost is bled away through a bleed valve system that allows a max of 8psi. It feels like a normal car with on fast forward, same characteristics just faster and because it doesn\'t have a piggy back but uses a reflash on the Stock PCM (ECU) it doesn\'t encounter problems or throw the car into limp home mode like some of the other conversions.

My one does now its supercharged! Its awesome!
One of the good things about it, is the supercharger keeps the rotary characteristic of more revs = more power...so no boost and fade like a turbo, just smooth power from zero to limit. The dyno curves are just like stock just a lot higher. (not on my one as I haven\'t dynoed post install)
For what its worth the reflash lowers rev limiter 500 revs (I think) to preserve the engine a little bit, but you get so much more power anyway, who cares.
You could always request a full rev range if you wanted I guess.....
My recipe for instant RX8 success is buy a PZ second hand and add supercharger = awesome! (IMHO)
The 350Z has the slow engine from the v6 renault vel satis, look up the drag race between the older 300zx and the 350z, just shows how slow the 350z is as it was designed in california by an indian from liester. I don\'t know why they took forced induction off the rotarys :(

think they wanted reliability. Plus i think they had several problems with forced induction but mazda are experimenting now.
at the end of the day, the rx8 is slightly less powerfull than the pre 99 7\'s and it suposedly handles better. Look at the mx5, its hardly fast yet its the best selling sports car in the world.
Hmm well if they wanted reliability, why did they let it rev to 9k lol
It revs to 9k and is reliable. Engines going on an RX8 is the exception rather than the norm.
Thats true :) the revised rotor and oil delivery systems as well as the intake system means it is partially forced induction
I like the slick noise too. It\'s not as aggressive as a Bridgeport 13B (awesome noise too) but it has the right amount of edge and smoothness, the pops and bangs on the overrun are cool too.
id love them to do a high powered FD on topgear just to see how it would compare with the exotics...
I reckon they should do a jap event with the like of FD\'s, GTR\'s supra\'s etc, now that\'s be good TV
