Title: Heat soke
Post by: rx7ben on August 18, 2008, 02:40:24 PM
Do the rx7"s suffer with heat problems.

The reason i ask is when my car is up to tempature and i floor it for first time the car really goes and the turbo"s kick in quite alot. But it seems when the engines hot it doesnt go as well. The enginebay seems to get really really hot and i noticed under the airfilter theres a large metal plate and i was told under that is a radiator so this cant help. Not only that but it seems you cant touch anything in the bay because its so hot.

Is there any way of helping this matter or is it very common with the rx7"s

Erm,,, yes! Big time suffer from heat soak, heat kills these engines, it\'s common for the engine to get hot but too much heat and it can be bad news. You should always wait for the engine to get to temperature and let it cool down before you stop, sounds like your not allowing it to cool enough before stopping, try staying off the boost for the last 5 mins of a journey as this will give the car time to cool before it stops. This helps prevent ht oil stopping in the turbos etc. Best way to reduce it is to get a new rad, ducting for the air intakes, uprated rad and I/c are fairly common, change the coolant, and a vented bonnet. Costs a fortune tho.

It\'s very common on a stock \'7.

Things get cooler with intercooler, the run that you\'ve just done, whether you\'ve been sat in traffic, whether it\'s a hot day or not, whether you have a vented bonnet, if you\'re single turbo or not.

I have a vented bonnet, don;t tend to do much traffic driving, have a single turbo and a half decent intercooler, and my bay is very rarely too hot to touch (Other than turbo, exhaust and obvious hot bits!)

I allways let the car heat up first for atleast 10-15 mins before giveing it some and allways allow to run for at least 2mins

Are you driving the car during the warm up? Cause just letting it sit is not too healthy as your not getting any air flow around the engine which can cause more probs, my normal routine it to switch it on and drive off, keep off the boost for 10 mins or so (well after the engine temp it up as the oil takes longer to get to correct temp) and then the same for cooling down, especially if i\'ve been driving hard. I\'ve got a vented bonnet too which does help massively

yep never let the car just stand there running when you have finished driving, as said before drive the last 10 minutes off boost, park up and just switch straight off
