Is the temp gauge on the standard dash a oil temp or water temp.....
I always assume is oil temp but just want confirmation.:p
its water.
water. < it is!

Thanks guys:cheers
Couple of points to note since cooling is crucial on an FD.
The gauge does not move quickly with each fluctuation in water temp (which is happening all the time). If it starts to move up from say quarter to 12(o\'clock), then pull over, switch off and check and let it cool down.
The red indicator at the top of the gauge denotes low water in the filler neck and you must top up with coolant asap if it stays on. If water gets too low you will hear a buzzer too.

Not always right, Sometimes turning off is the completely wrong thing to do. Better off coasting for a few miles on tickover to allow air to get over the cooling surfaces. This gives the coolant chance to drop back to a safe level and not warp things.

It\'s not an easy call. If you have been driving hard then expect temperatures to rise as you use the power, and, a cool down period (or lap) is best.
If in normal driving and the gauge starts to move upwards, since it is damped and does not register quickly, I would pull over and get the bonnet up to have a look and let it cool.

The gauge will start to move from horizontal at 120c. 120C is hot but not damaging. 130c + is not where you want to go.
