Title: Richard Burns Memorial WRC event
Post by: pdtaylor18 on August 16, 2008, 05:19:37 PM
Well Its easier to put the links up and let everyone decide about the event.

In short RAF Marham (near Kings Lynn, Norfolk) will be hosting the World Rally teams at the Air Base in memory of Richard Burns.  All money will go to Charity and we are hoping to raise 100K.  So far 4 of the world teams have pledged cars and drivers and mixed with local and national club teams should prove facinating and a chance in a lifetime to drive aginst the best.  Its not all about being competitive as even Richard Burn\'s father will drive his Sons Ford Escort he used to start out in.  Clubs pay an entrance fee of £300 and then give the same amount again to charity.  This is a two day event:

Saturday 13th Sept and Sunday 14th Sept

Entrance fee for spectators will be £10 each day and camping will be available with toilet and shower facilities.

So where do we sit in all of this??

Well this is the Base where I work and we operate the Tornado GR4 Strike aircraft.  The Base will affectively close down for this event as it will utilise as much as the airfield side as possible, the course is approx 15 miles long.
There are several Car Clubs that have been invited and as they are mainly Subaru (understandably as this was what Richard drove) I thought it nice that we bring along some RX7\'s.  This has a two fold affect:

1.  You could come as a spectator, get penned into a special staged area where you will see a lot of action, burger vans, drinks etc etc. You would not be able to roam as this will be fairly restricted but it is a large area and will have things for the kids to do.  If it rains there will be no cover.
The Car Clubs will be in this area.

2.  You would come not only as a spectator, car club representitive but you would come under my umbrella which will give you a unique opportunity to view the mechanics servicing area and the ability to roam or see things from the other side of the airfield.

Saturday night is party night and at present I have a very good band, trying to get two if I can and disco.  Hog roast, bars where beer will be fairly cheap (only thing you pay for) and several other vendors for food.
The party will be ticket only so it pays to go for option two.
We have a fairly large field for camping and we are hiring in toilets and showers, its only about a 10 min walk from party to field.

So what do you all think ?  oh I will also show you around the Tornado GR4 and maybe give an insight into what it does and what we all do in the RAF.

For those already in the Military you will still need a ticket.

At only £10 a day its an excellent way of gtting up and close to these breath taking cars.  We will have several VIP\'s, hoping for a Top Gear v 5th Gear competition and we are hoping for Clarkson to be a guest speaker at the evening formal dinner, this is a ticket only and invited guests only.  Lucky me is going !!!

What I need now is feed back, positive feed back and a vote to see if MRC can attend this event in some sort or other.  Even though my allegience is to this Club it can be open to all Rotaries clubs but you will come under the MRC banner.  Numbers and names will have to be in fairly soon as I will need details and personal details to obtain passes etc.
Remember that this is all for Charity, you will get to display your cars for the public and you also get to see World and national rally cars in action.

I think as this thread might get rather large then if you are interested then start a list which we will keep going, an easier way to keep track of people.  On the day you will need at least your driving license and ideally a passport or other form of photo ID. makes things so much easier and without ID you will not gain entrance.

RAF Marham post code is PE33 9LX (my house actually but its the right gate)  and is just 2 hours from London in a FC or 2 1/2 hours in a FD !! lol

Add your name below and state if you are coming for 1 or 2 days, camping and if you are bringing passengers, car model might be good.  Anyone know who owns the Fortune car? Now that might be good.

Well I need to0 keep plugging this.  A bit more info for you, Subaru will b taking part with the 2008 rally car with Marco Martin with co driver Reid.  Ford UK have a driver but no co-driver and are looking to secure someone like Clarkson for this event.  If you come under the MRC banner then your £10 will get you free camping, one beer and one hog roast roll, also a free live band with disco in an outside venue.  Beer will be fairly cheap. Not only that there will be a Tornado flypast and firework display on the Saturday night.   This is purely a ticket only event and I do need to know numbers, obtain security clearances and those that are camping ideally by the end of the month. I would also recommend that if you intend coming as a spectator or indeed to show your car then again earlier tickets are purchased the easier it will be.  It will also secure your place as well as tickets are limited.

There are still places available if you wish to enter a rally car and drive amongst the best but it does come under strict MSA rules and is no different in regulations to any other national event.  At present there are 90 confirmed entrants out of a max 150 cars who will compete in this RB Memorial Rally.

Daily plug for this event.  Go on, read the thread and then make the trip.  Remember that Marham holds regular track days which is basically a free for all on the airfield, no noise limits, long runway to get your top speed, wide track with virtually nothing to hit.  Come and see the place, enjoy the day and then come back to track your car.  From London its just two hours, nottingham 2 hours so its not that far really.

A few changes to how you can pay.  You can now pay on the gate as a spectator or indeed as a car exhibitor for MRC/Rotary cars.  If you intend to show your car then I will still need some personal details so that I can ensure you have a \'special pass\' for not only access to the pit/service area but for the party in the evening.
I unfortunately will be entertaining Marco Martin and Richard Reid, also Richard Burn\'s Father on the Friday night.

More info will follow for anyone displaying their car and I will make contact with you prior to the event to ensure attendance and where to reach me on the day for your passes.

Its been a few days and now have to add some more weight to the event.  Its going to be televised by Sky TV (DAVE).  We have had the 2008 Subaru Impresa at our Base for some promotional stuff, quite a cool car and so different to its booted past.
The event is now building up to be quite spectacular and I think deep down it might well become an annual event if it all goes without injuries or serious dramas. At present from car entrance fees and donations we should have already 40K in the bank to charity and thats without the public entrance fees.  We have done well so far and even Tesco\'s donated £400 but that will end up going back to them as we need to buy drinks and liquids for the marshals around the course.  My wife has been given a brand new Subaru for the weekend from Subaru UK to ensure that all track officials are well looked after between stages (food and drink!!!!!) lol  I know how some of you think.

Right now though I need some more Rx7\'s or rotaries to attend for a display, you need not be at the car, just park and go and enjoy the show. As stated before theres free camping with toilets and showers and those that show their cars will get an invitation to the Saturday night party, free hog roast and bottle of beer with two bands and firework display to round the evening off.  You will also get access to the service area where the general public will not be allowed to view for safety reasons.
There will be a car every 30 seconds and at various times they should cross paths on numerous occasions.  Being a flat airfield you will get to see a vast amount of the action.

Marham (kings Lynn) is just two hours from either London or Northampton so really not that far to travel for a fun filled weekend.  Drop me a line soonest, either pm or at pdtaylor18@hotmail.com and we can discuss details to get some clearance passes.  If I can have details soonest then I can get the gate fee waived and it becomes a very cheap weekend.

Going to keep plugging this, cars entered are now in excess of 120, you must read the RB site thread and see whats entering

Aston martin DB9
Escort Cosworths
Lots of other Cosworths
Lancia Stratos
Subarus

The list goes on and on.

If you have already put your name down to go or are even thinking of going then I will have passes for you to get to the party on saturday night.  Or you need is at least tell me you are definately coming and I will make sure that anyone associated with MRC or the FDUk lot can gain access to show their car.

Please phone me on 07961451422 when you are somewhere near the base and i will meet you. The event will be well sign posted from either Downham Market, Kings Lynn or Swaffham roads GPS/postcode is PE339NP to the Camp gates but signposts will direct you to the gate which is being used for entry and exit. Bring a brolley !!!  The event will go ahead regardless of weather, nothing will stop this event.  You will definately get to meet Richards Burn\'s Father, Marco Martin and Richard Reid at the party so that in itself will be worth the while.  Shame there has not been more of an offtake on this as i am sure it will become an annual event somewhere in the country and not necessarily here at Marham.

You will get the best advantage points that I can take you to.  There are numerous places we can get too for at least a stage before we move on.  There are 8 stages in total and I only imagine that they are split for each day.  My party in the evening is gonna be a blast, I now have to cater for about 800 people, thats about £6000 in beer alone!!! good job we have sale and return.  For camping there will be a burger van from 6am on sat morning, on the friday our local bar/bowling alley is doing a pint and meal for £5.  If you are coming friday, let me know and I will meet you somewhere.  It will be signposted to camp area so you should not miss it.

GPS:  official postcode for camp is PE339NP but if you use my house address the campsite is a stones throw away  so:  PE33 9LX  No 18 Poplar avenue if you want to call in.  At moment only 3 of us if Hamc still comes but it will be enough.  Its not as if its about our cars as its for the Rally, in fact its for us for a change.

John, have sent you the Tickets, car pass and tickets for the party for the both of you.

Geoff I will see you Friday night if you get car done or whenever.  Just phone my mobile number and I will come to you. I will leave your passes on the spectators entrance from saturday but I will have spares so dont worry.

For both of you camping and you want to set up prior to going into the spectator area which I recommend to get a good position for tent. Its going to be a bit busy with 30 motor homes, 40 caravans and about 150 tents.

Top Top weekend - absolutely brilliant.

Gotta roll into bed now, but have just flicked through the 750-odd photos i took, looks like I got some reasonable ones... :D  will try to get them developed over the next few days, work etc permitting...

Cheers to Pete for organising it / inviting us :Thumbs-up
Title: Pics!
Post by: logicalChimp on September 15, 2008, 08:44:06 PM
Well, i\'m slowly developing the pics I took over the weekend... got some that i\'m pretty chuffed with! ;)

As a side note - some of the pics look a little static.  I ended up suffering from a rare English photographers problem - or more accurately, a photographers problem that is rare in England - there was too much light!  At times, the slowest shutter speed I could manage was 1/4000 (good sharpness, but poor sense of motion, for non-camera techies :D)

Then we got more typical English light - a s*dding black cloud sat in front of the sun, with a really bright horizon (giving serious exposure headaches :Grrr).

Still - got enough to make it worthwhile...  Putting them up on my website initially (while developing) - will put the better ones up here later, but for now, you can find them at (fingers crossed I get the link right): http://photo.mentalspace.co.uk/viewGallery?reqYear=2008&reqGalName=[2008-09-14]%20Richard%20Burns%20Memorial%20Rally (http://photo.mentalspace.co.uk/viewGallery?reqYear=2008&reqGalName=%5B2008-09-14%5D%20Richard%20Burns%20Memorial%20Rally)

You can try this link as well, over 600 pics !!!

Just an absolute fantastic weekend and I really hope we can do this again next year with bigger and better array of cars, more WRC cars but still retain the amateurs v proffessional drivers.  We are going to sit down as organisers and debate if it can happen again here or anywhere else but financially for the charities then its defo worth it.  Not sure on the total raised but I will keep you updated.
I will let the pics do the talking.
