Title: Turbo setup for 350-400bhp
Post by: leeroy_25 on August 15, 2008, 08:22:14 PM
I am looking at rebuilding my engine with possibly some very mild porting and going single turbo. I am only looking for around 350-400bhp to maintain driveabilty. Does this turbo set-up sound okay?
67mm compressor wheels and P trim turbine wheels. 0.96a/r turbine housing.

What else would people recommend.

Thank you
Lee

Spool vs cost, if you want that power level and don\'t want to spend on a gt35 I;d say look into either a to4s (or even to4e). Low boost on a to4s should see those figures.

Would\'nt the lag time be less if you had a V mount instead of a front mount?

Cheers Memski,
How does that compare Trim , compressor size and A/R wise to the figures I put down?

Mitch not sure what you are saying here?? If you are refering to the intercooler.. I don\'t know all the ins and outs of it, but I would guess it doesn\'t make a huge difference. I would expect a bit more pressure loss accross a FMIC as a pose to a V-mount as the piping run is likely to be longer for a start. any how I am running a nice neat SMIC.

Cheers

350/400....... i presume you mean fwhp?

The A-spec GT3574 is good for those figures even with a stock port. You\'d need to some work on it to plumb the wastegate back in.

Yes that\'s correct. so I guess that translates to 300bhp or so at the hubs?

to4e mate, will make 300 atw @ 0.7 bar piece of cake and will probably hit high 300\'s with more boost. Or To4R to take it up to 400 flywheel

T04S is the perfect turbo for your needs.

On mine with small porting I see 335 rwhp at 0.85 bar, 385fwhp.

Driveable and reliable :D

thats what im using with a 1.0 a/r exhaust but with pretty big ports hoping for 380rwhp with very good spool.

The figures you\'ve put up are similar to the t04r, I would go with a to4e if you want maximum spool and aren\'t worried about top end power. To4s is more future proof at the expense of low end grunt. Speak to cash he had a to4e for quite some time and now has a to4s equivalent (60-1).

3574 would be nice but it will cost more and there\'s only one place that makes this turbo in the states.

yes i would say a t61 or t62 will be ideal for you...with scope for more power in the future....cos you are goona want more at some point!!!!!!. I got Kashs turbo for him and spec\'d it to his requirements....hence the reason he has an unusually large rear housing......needless to say he is loving it!.....

Gimme a shout and ill let you know what i can get and for how much.

Yep as Eds said enjoying my turbo loads and it\'s not been mapped to full potential yet, but boy does it go! :D

Hehehe...I like it....funny:Giggle

Driveability is more related to your clutch type, not so much the power. Puck & button clutches that bite hard and are crapy in traffic will make even a 100hp car crapy to drive. Go for a nice single, twin or triple plate Exedy clutch. The Carbon range are the best, they are designed for high power but operate like a stock clutch. Smooth traffic driving.

I think driveability in the terms of power is more a thing of how the person behinde the wheel applys that power to the road. Im not laughing at you, I just think what you said is funny.

Dont get me wrong, power can be leathel, but it dose not so much affect the drivabelity of the car as much as the right clutch setup will.

Hi There Doc!
I see where your coming form. but when I was talking riveablity I just litterally meant I don\'t want a turbo that needs 6000rpm to get it going and leave me with no low down grunt! I am more interested in something that will go like a missile from go than the out and out power! The rx7 is a nice light car by comparisson to my old liner so I want to make use of that! My intention clutch wise was to go for a twin plate of sorts. They seem pretty reasonable from the states so I will probably order one from there!

Now Ed. can you e-mail me at leeroy_25@hotmail.com so I can see what you might be able to do for me?

Cheers

I say T04S. And to give another perspective on the clutch, I think Exceddys are generally horrible grinding clutches. Ogura clutches are very good, but to be honest at that power level, you wont need that meaty a clutch in it.

Cheers Ed,
Will try and give you a bell tomorrow. Best go and give the Mrs some attention!
One thing I wondered. I am sure all of you wil laugh.. on ebay you can get some seemingly cheap turbo\'s from the US and China! I gather the really cheap ones from china are a denifite no no, there are some OBX ones from the states that are mid range priced.. anyone got any comments on this or is it purely stick to garrett? I presume I need a T4 flange as a pose to a T3? and is divided better?
What limits will the A/r ratio give power wise.. say a 0.70 as a pose to 1.0a/r?

Thank you
Lee

also while we are on this subject. For my power requirements will I require uprated injectors? are 850\'s big enough? What about a fuel pump?

Thanks!

I\'m on stock injectors with uprated intank pump and fpr

850\'s all round is my target setup.

Haa totaly understand what you mean. Most medium sized turbos spool fairly quickly. The GT35R 1.06AR T3 that I use is lovely for the street. The car even has more pull than a stock TT without using the turbos. I know this as we have to FD\'s. Both motors are extended port. I have driven next to the TT & both of us only just cruised along from a stand still going to about 3500rpm before each gear change, I was ahead after an even start from the lights. Her front was at the rear of my car.

My girl friend has driven my car & said to me that it has alot more pull without useing the turbo when driving around town. If you want the power its there, Stand on the throttle in 1st or 2nd & it spools up very very quickly. If you are in higher gears it takes longer to spool. Eg: The TT has more pull from 100kph 5th gear cruise if you decide you want to accelerate. Single will pull in 5th from 100kph & spool but it will not spool as fast. TT would hit full boost before 3k or just after depending on your other mods from 5th, where as the single would not. However, drop the gear to 3rd & be prepared to hang on.

My 1.06 T3 on a dyno pull in 4th starts to make boost from 2k & gets full boost at 4k. Depending on IC setup & pipeing results may vary.

I would not trade my single setup for a TT. Medium Single is perfect for town driving.

The Japs use 850 all round due to the fact that most aftermarket injectors have a different impendance & require resistors for the PFC to control them. If you are not using a PFC, find out what type of impendance your ECU will control.

If you do not intend to seek more power later on then 1 intank walbro pump should be just fine. Mate that with a good quality fuel pressure reg & a set of 850\'s all round. This will be more than enough for 450hp.

Thats interesting...do you mean that the bearings are noisey when the clutch is disengaged?

The D core carbon twin plate that I use is fine. It dose not grind. The bearings are a little noisey if thats what you mean by grinding. Other than that its top notch.

cheers guy\'s,
I have a Power FC to go in.. I have found some 850cc injectors for the primary\'s but not enough for all aorund. Is it worth just doing the primarys? I am not sure how the injector setup works on these and why you have primary and secondary ones?!

I see there is amix of T3 and T4 flanges on people\'s set-ups.. I have read about the T4 divided ones being better? what say ye all? It seems the T3 is more common on the mid sized turbo\'s? what about the manifolds for them? Then what happens with the downpipe? Will I need to get one custom made or are they available off the shelf?

Also I didn\'t get any laughs or repsonse to this?!

Thanks for the chat Ed.. Doing my research now!

By the way.. I have jsut bought a primary rail with 850cc injectors! Hope they are what they are supposed to be. Is there a particular colour they should be? or will they have writing on them? Can someone let me know if I can run that rail alone with my standard secondaries?
Cheers
Lee

By the way. here is a link to my project page.. only because Ed hasn\'t seen it!
It\'s been on hold for the past few weeks as I have a lot of other stuff going on.. Hoping to get a bit more done in the next few weeks.

Okay guys.. I have some more info and turbo options.. I have found a guy doing some borg warner turbo\'s in the states. They are based on an S200 series turbo which they have put and bigger PT67 compressor housing on. If that makes sense? the spec is: 3" inlet, 67mm compressor, P trim wheel, with 0.96 A/R. This place claims to have the first sub 7 sec twin rotor rx7! I think this is a turbo they have specifically tweaked for the rotary engine? Anyhow he has given other options of a garrett whith 4" inlet for a bit more or Master power for a bit less.. But I was interested but the Borg Warner!
Let me know what you all think.. The garret is an equivalent size and spec but the Master power has a bit large 70mm compressor. Not sure what model that relates to though?

Opinions on which route to go would be appreciated! Also do I want to make sure it\'s a tangential type housing or is an on-centre type better on the rotary??

Thank you
Lee

How much do you want to spend? Id say just buy a Garret GT3582R with a 0.86 A/R T3 flange. It will give you the power you want, its water & oil cooled, spools up insanely fast & will scare the **** out of you if its your first high powerd car.

If you want more power later on then buy the 1.06 A/R. Dont mess around jut buy something thats going to last & give you everything that you want. Use your money wisely & invest in this turbo. It has everything you need & some. You will thank your self for saving that little bit more for the good stuff.

Thanks for the info Chaps... Ed.. I don\'t suppose you could let me know what Master Power Turbo you were speccing the other day? Just trying to get a price comparision?
Doc... I will look into this turbo. But as I explained to Ed I am really not after loads of power! I am building a GTR at the mo and planning a 600bhp RB30 motor for it. That will be my power build! I don\'t want to spend a bomb on a turbo either.. £500-600 max.. Even if that means going second hand. I do agree that I should invest wisely though.. That is why I am not going to buy a dog cheap one! It is very liley I will build the car and sell it in less than a year as I have a habit of needing a project to work on! A completed car isn\'t much of a project!! So I can use this car as a learning base and then maybe use a bigger turbo and more power on the next build.. Although I have been thinking about bunging a V8 in one or trying to shoe horn and RB26 in one?!
Anyway. Rotary is where it\'s at for now!
