Title: Rixxy is ill
Post by: Prof on August 14, 2008, 07:41:43 PM
Well it had to happen - at least it waited till after Rotorstock :eek

Was driving to work this morning - nice cold air, free roads, white skyline etc. etc.

Anyways, I am cruising along all happy and following the white liner, and he moves over on the inside and I overtake, waving a hello as I go past. I let the revs drop as I come into the next village, unaware that any thing has gone wrong. It wasn\'t until I get to the next roundabout that I normally take in 2nd gear that the car starts to splutter and struggle - dropping into 1st, I make it around the roundabout but the car seems to be less than happy. I nurse it all the way into work - with the intention of going to Rotechniks at lunchtime afer calling them, but it appears they are not doing to well either.

Long story short, the engine is going - still starts ok, but rattles like a bag of lego in a blender (http://www.japgirls.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif) (http://www.japgirls.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif) - It\'s not long for this world. But the remaining few months of my warranty are now worthless, as my engine builder has also taken a turn for the worse - almost as if it\'s gone out in sympathy (http://www.japgirls.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/lol.gif)

I\'ve managed to source another engine and also gearbox, as my 5th Synchro has gone, so I\'ll be spending the next days and week(s) pulling out one engine and swapping the other one in.

Who\'d own a rotary ? (http://www.japgirls.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)(http://www.japgirls.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)

sounds like a seal\'s gone - haven\'t done the woosh test yet - if the bloody weather ever clears up this evening I\'ll get out there and pull the plugs out and see which rotor has gone, but it\'s almost certainly what\'s happened.

I\'ve found another donor engine - which will be the quickest way to turn the car around.  Just a bummer really.

Bloody hell. Sorry to hear about this. I haven\'t even started mine since I got back from RS5 for fear of it blowing up. I dunno it just seems to be that time of the year and i\'ve got all scared. Hope its an easy fix for you and not too expensive either.

I know - after that dyno chart I can see why - but at least you\'ve got some warning before it goes pear shaped.  All my readings were good and things seemed to be on top form - and then this - just wish I\'d got some inkling before hand :(

It was about 16 months into the rebuild, although it got a mini rebuild 4 months in because of the rear iron cracking near the oil filer pedestal - turned out I had the weakest version of this rear plate.  As for Miles - I do about 1000 miles a month in it - so it wasn\'t super fresh - but the engine didn\'t feel week and always started on the first turn of the key.

Sorry to hear the news Dave, i suppose it\'ll mean bigger ports as a plus side when you get around to rebuilding it. You can really give the other half a run for her money then on the strip then.

This is true - plus it will be the first engine I pull apart and put back together - all be it at my leisure.  I\'ve been involved in an engine transplant project on someone elses car - so I\'ve a fair idea of what I need to do - time to get the hands dirty I guess.

As for beating the missus - she managed to pull a 115 terminal even after losing to a more powerful zed at Rotorstock - she\'s really getting into it now - if she ever gets brave enough to launch hard, I\'ll never catch her unless I put a 20b in it :Laugh

Prof,
"rattles like a bag of lego in a blender"

It\'s sound like rotor\'s bearing gone and eshaft as well and done it twice in mine\'s time due to high rev racing even with buffer plate.
knowing that\'s sh*t happen but good luck with your rebuild.

Sorry to hear that Dave, did you buy Ben\'s Lump ? Now that is ready to drop in !!
get those ports done and then with all your kit on the car it should push some good BHP.
At least you can rebuild in your own time and when funds aree available. If ever I see a poor engine i am going to get one just to strip, learn and then rebuild. I have the DVD if you want a copy, its the Aussi one and pretty good.

If there is anything you need then let me know, you are not too far from me and I can rip these out in a few hours. I also have an engine hoist as well.

Thats unlucky :(

When you say "But the remaining few months of my warranty are now worthless, as my engine builder has also taken a turn for the worse" - do you mean that Rotechniks are not able/willing to honour your warranty?  thats very disturbing... (especially as they just rebuilt mine too) :(

PLEASE Clarify the situation with ROTECHNIKS as this is of great interest to the wider rotary community.

What are you doing with the damaged engine?

What are you doing with the damaged engine?

I\'m going to rebuild it myself - was planning on doing that with another engine ready for when this one let go (thinking that was some time off in the future :2Rolleyes), but fate has forced that upon me earlier.  The engine definitely has a seal gone - unusually it\'s the front rotor from the sounds it was making.  Engine really struggled to start cold - and has that tell tale beat in the exhaust - not good.  Ran it only long enough to establish it\'s fu bar\'d and to drop the fuel pressure out by disconnecting the pump - ready for the tear down this weekend.

For now I\'ll just get the lump out, as I\'ve loads of stuff to do around the house, but it\'ll be a project for end of the year - early next year.  Going to strip, clean and paint the whole block, and do a full rebuild, then store it ready for the next time.

I do give my engines a hard time - so probably a good idea if I learn to rebuild them and get good at it - lol

sorry to here about your problem Dave.
Don\'t know if this might be of intrest ? low milage high power RX8 engine and bits.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-RX8-RX-8-231ps-ENGINE-ECU-LOOM-DRIVESHAFTS-PUMPS_W0QQitemZ130246115329QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130246115329&_trkparms=72%3A1121%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
It would be interesting trying to make it fit, but it\'s cheaper than a rebuild.
Good luck with it
Grant
