Title: new rebuilt (streetport) and initial tuning
Post by: Speedworks on August 13, 2008, 01:31:33 PM
Hello,

I just finished rebuilding and installing my engine . it has a Judge Ito streetport (aggressive/large). Other current mods are: removed all emissions, no airpump, apexi filters, Apexi PFC

Still running standard injectors and NO boost for the break in.

mods soon to come: Trust 800 mm downpipe and 2*60mm midpipe/catback combo (one off build), HKS twin power, upgraded sec injectors (1300 or 1680cc\'s)

I had some problems to control idle but I have it now down to a steady 1000rpm. Only problem I have no is that when I rev the engine to  fe 4000rpm, step of the throttle and rev the engine immediately again to fe 4000rpm, the engine seems to choke or flood for a moment. Then it either dies or hardly recovers.

On the other hand... when I do thesame but very slowly let the engine rev up again, it doesn\'t do this.

I guess I need to adjust something in the lower rpm region.

I also increased the RPM settings in the PFC Menu \'Setting\'- Idle control but that doesn\'t seem to help.

Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated

Neal

are you running the original base map that comes with the Apexi PFC ?

yes I am. I just adjusted the idle rpm\'s to maximum (900/1000/1100rpm) and raised the 3 values above that (injector pick up rpm). For the rest I unselected the use of all functions (lambda etc) in the PFC except for the idle control function

ok thats your problem right there, you have just put in a big street ported motor into you car, this has completely changed the VE, ECU is still putting in the same fuel as if it was a stock ported engine, you are probably running very lean hence why it cant idle properly, you need to add fuel via the cells that are being used at idle, do you have a datalogit?

the datalogit is on order but I would like to adjust the fuel settings now so I\'m safe

It\'s just that I need to find out how much I need/can/should add to the existing fuel map to get the major things sorted. Just that I can drive the car to break it in.
i plan to do a full tune once i have all the parts here otherwise I need to start all over again.

Could you point out how much to add and where?
I have an Innovative WB kit on the way as well.

Many thanks
Neal

PS: i\'m in belgium, where we have few people familiar with rotaries, let alone tuning them. So Afterwards I\'ll be heading for the UK to get it tuned properly

It\'s virtually impossible to tell how much fuel to add without the WB: you could end up adding too much and end up with fouled plugs. Do you have an adjustable fuel pressue regulator? If you do, you could up the pressure a little bit to improve the ratio (Which would add fuel over the entire map) as a safety feature until you get your data logit kit and WB.

Nik is right you really do need a wideband to tell, you can either increase fuel pressure as Nik says or you can increase the fuel by about 10 percent via the commander on each individual cell which is a bit of a pain, the manual that comes with the FC commander tells you how to do this on each cell.
With the wideband for idle you want it quite strong on a big street port in region of 12.5:1 to 13:1 afr.
Defo dont boost it until you get it to a tuner with a rolling road and wideband

So a ratio of 11.8 is a bit rich then? :D As that\'s what I have. Think i need to lean it out a touch!!

yep just a tad if thats your warm value lol

With big inlet ports you tend to have to lean the fuel out at idle as the port does not scavenge so easily.

I\'ve not got big ports on mine - kinda middly! Tried leaning out my idle. Had some success, but when it started getting near the right AFR it started to stall. So i opened up the butterflies a bit for idle, and eventually ended up with an idle of 1300rpm!!

Grrrr

my idle is now spot on at 1000rpm, I could co lower. THough it\'s not set with the PFC (which is now on the highest value 900 rpm (no load) )

So i have bene reading up on the fuel correction in the PFC instructions. On page 22 there is an explanation about how they calculate the fuek correction value. Pretty straight forward. This is at aan AFR of 12 to 1

Now above that they mention an adjustment in an example of 1,214 to 1,25.

Which in fact is a 3% increase if you calculate it.

So basically if I want to adjust this, I first need to make a recalculation of the fuel correction map at fe 12,5 to 1 AFR and then increase it with 10% or can I leave the 10% for what it is?

Or don\'t coreect the fuel correction map and just add 1¨% to the existing values of the base map?

For a spot on tuned map I assume you need a combination of the 2

MAny thanks
