Title: Electric Problem & a Squeak???
Post by: jonny116 on August 12, 2008, 10:49:47 AM
Took the old jap tape player out and put a brand new Kenwood headunit in but was acting up faulty e.g. switching on and off / jumping.

Then last night I notice all my rear lights are out (brake lights etc work just when pedal is pushed), but the dash lighting is really dim but front lights and headlights are fine.

Disconnected the headunit to see if that had caused a problem but still the same, tried a few buttons and noticed when I put my fog light on everything works fine??!! Connected the headunit back in to see what happened and now that works fine (whether fog light on or not).

Have I partly blown a fuse anywhere here or do I have some dodgy wiring??? I think it was all fine until I took the jap tape player out (bearing in mind only had car for a day).

Also I have a suspension like squeak coming from the front left of the car somewhere, any ideas?

Is going back on Saturday no problems to get sorted but thought may be able to remedy it myself if its just simple.

Cheers
Jonny

Does it have aftermarket suspension? My coilovers used to squeak cos the top nut was too wide for the aperture in the turret, and used to rub slightly. Drove me bloody insane! Some metal top mounts can rattle and squeak a bit when they get old and not too clever. Failing that, bushes, I guess?

Sorry, no idea about the electrics, ithey work on black magic as far as I\'m concerned :)

Black magic sounds bout right!!!

Yeah it has Blistein adjustbles on it.  How did you stop the squeek? is sending me daft!

for the head unit, you have to make your own ground with the black wire out the back of a aftermarket head unit! as the stock harness dose not have a supporting ground (i think).

Ahh there was a black earth connector that i didnt bother with, didnt think it would need it.

Could i have blown a fuse on the rear lights by not doing this?  Just wierd how everything lights up fine when the fog light is turned on...

Where is best behind the headunit to attach it to?  Tape it against the strut that the unit attached to?

well mine is just connected to one of the four lil screws that are used to hold that rubber gaitor thing down around the gear stick , if you get what i mean?

and as for the fuse i think it might of went pop! dose your interior light still come on?

Hmmm - that earthing point shouldn\'t work, Envy - those gaitor screws only go plastic-to-plastic?

I\'ve got several earthing wires bolted down under the gear surround to - but they use the bigger bolts slightly further back, that hold the transmission tunnel cover down onto the trans tunnel... there\'s a pair of screws, approx where the ashtray sits...

That said, the wireing in my car is in an absolute state - as soon as my new head-unit turns up, i\'ll be making a start on ripping a lot out and replacing it... i\'ve got so many wires running under the gear surround that it doesn\'t actually clip into place any more :o

The Gaitor screws worked o.k for earthing on mine too!!

Yeah interior light comes on.

There must either be a fuse gone or some dodgey wiring??

I just cant imagine a headunit would cause bother, is just a swap for another unit at end of day!!

i dont mean to the plastic! i mean the ones that are in the chassis that bolt the rubber gaitor think down that is under the leather gaitor!

like in this pick.. (not my car)

Any ideas on a quick fix for the squeek coming from the front end?

Sound like something to do with the adjustable suspension??

Ahhh - D\'oh.  I figured you was talkin about the leather gaiter, that just bolts into the plastic gear surround :D

I\'ve got so many cables / wires etc under there that I hadn\'t even seen a rubber gaiter...:o (no joke - you can\'t even see the metal of the chassis in most areas :( )

there must be a fuse gone some where :S as that is just odd!

can not help with the shocks either as i have never run coilovers on my car yet, so i have not had that problem!

What is this japanese voodoo????

Well i thought it must be a fuse, but checked them and they all in tact.  Am wondering whether to replace them all and see what happens??

Head unit is sorted now though and have tunes working fine!!  cheers!!

At the risk of sounding a bit of a barbarian, the holes the top nuts stick out of in the turrets have been ...ahem... clearanced slightly with a big file! Sounds a bit pikey, but better than being driven insane by the squeak. Not much use if yours are squaeking from another cause, though!

Its not a fuse mate, if it was then your lights wouldn\'t come on at all no matter what state the fog switch was in. Sounds like you got a short in the circuit. The only thing powering the lights is the fogs which means who ever wired in your fog has gashed it in there and prob cut into cables he shouldn\'t have. You got no leckie minded people near you?

Download a copy of the wiring diagram and start tracing wires, have you checked all connections to rear light clusters and the earthing connector near spare tyre well?

yeah i can do that tonight when i get a chance, is the earth connector that large bit of piping on the left of the spare wheel?

Saying that it does have an aftermarket fog light switch on it for some reason?? I wonder if something has shorted with that, possibly under the centre console?

Is your car a jap import? And when you say fogs, you mean rear fog light?

If so, the fog light has been wired in seperately... If like mine they\'ve wired the switch into the permanant live, so it\'ll switch on and off even with the ignition off... Genius!

But they could have easily spliced into the rear light circuit (so that it can only come on with the lights on), but they\'ve got it all ar$e about face therefore the circuit is only complete with that switch "on", who know\'s but that seems the most logical option.

Yeah yeah its a jap import and has the seperate switch, but dosent come on unless the lights are switched on.

So does that mean it should be wired into the permanent live (wherever that is?), and not to the rear light circuit.

Say it got changed from the rear light circuit to the permanent live, would i then have a rear fog i can swithc on and off, but no rear lights... or would this rememdy the problem?

It\'s right that it should be on a lighting circuit, so it\'ll only be on with the lights (mine was done by cowboys by the looks of things, hence the easiest option, just to grab a permanant live!).

But it\'s probably something around there, so maybe the fog is interupping the rear light cicuit somehow... If you\'re not too confident I\'d think that something like that would be pretty easy for an auto-electrician to sort (I\'m not BTW, just seems to be the case).

The fog light supply should come from the lighting circuit so the fog light is only on when the lights are on. If you have it wired up from a permanent live you could switch it on when you liked (very handy for spooking tailgaters as they think you are braking).

I see.  Just worried that if i take it off the light circuit then none of the lights will work at all on the rear!

haha, yeah i like the idea with the tailgate prevention button, used it many times on other cars!!

Swapped wires on the lights as advised and sorted!!
