Title: Helping passengers out of the car...
Post by: logicalChimp on July 28, 2008, 03:07:32 PM
Ok

I\'ll start be saying that pretty much all my mates/family are used to cars where they step down from the passenger seat

As such, if/when I give them a lift, they normally have to resort to pulling themselves out, using the outside of forward pillar to do so... and leaving lovely little scratches in the paintwork from their rings etc :Grrr

As such, i\'m looking at putting a handle or something on the inside of the pillar - but does anyone have any suggestions for handles that won\'t look too naff? :D

Also, does anyone have any suggestions on how to mount such a handle?  Just screwing it into the cladding won\'t do - all that will happen is the cladding gets pulled off.  Is there a second skin of metal there that I can tap into?

I would if i could, but it\'s a bit hard to turn my Mum down when she wants to pop over to my grans place \'in style\'

although personally I think the \'style\' effect is kinda lost in the struggles to get out :D

In that case you should be a gentleman and open her door before aiding her exit from the vehicle :Giggle

I agree this can be a problem, but I\'ve never found a solution. I once gave a mate a lift to work, he must weigh, like, 20 stone! I wasn\'t even sure that he\'d get in in the first place, but once he did, he looked hilarious wedged in there with his belly nearly resting on the dash, not to mention uncomfortable. Fortunately it was only a few miles, but when we got there the only way he could get out was to flop/roll out of the door sideways onto his hands and knees in the carpark. I PMSL at this point, even though the passenger seat mounts were creaking alarmingly and I thought he may take the entire seat with him! Strangely, he hasn\'t accepted any more offers of lifts...

:Giggle I feel for you dude, the classic line from passangers is "how do I open the door- where\'s the handle?", I explained it once to my gma and she swung the door open into the kerb! :2Mad- Luckily she forgot how to do it the next time round & I went round to open the door for her :o.

I think it sounds like a bolt + weld job, perhaps behind the a-pillar & then make a custom piller to acommodate the alterations?

I cant rember where ya get it from but put clear vinyl on the parts where they pull themselfs out.
The type that uses a little water to put on and peel off again easily to be reused.
We use them for the big 0% finance stickers on the side of the cars :D

Ok, first question. Do you have standard seats or buckets?

Easiest way in buckets I find is to put one hand on the transmission tunnel, and the other one on the outer "bucket side" of my seat and push myself out.. if you don\'t have buckets you don\'t even have to go upwards, tell them to just slide out with their feet, and use the doorhandle to pull themselves out/put one hand on the side of the seatback?

Don\'t go there putting a big(ugly) handle that won\'t look nice. You will only regret it. When it comes to your Mother, Get out first and give her a hand? It is your mother we are talking about.

Well it just so happens i know of a solution. I work for a disability aids company. We sell this product although we do not manufacture it. It is widely available though

Its called the handybar and you can get a version that also breaks windows if you feel the need

never tried fitting it to the FD though

That looks like it would slip off under strain given half the chance bud?  Or if its fitted badly?

We have sold hundreds of them and i\'m sure so have our competitors, no reported problems and at £20 if it didnt work they probably would have let us know by now.

That part of the car is usually pretty similar between models

see guide
http://www.handybar.com/instructions.html

They are on ebay too if you search for handybar.

I\'ll see you that and raise you watching a girl try and get out of the BACK seats... :yes :yes

Been asked to go as a taxi into town to pick up drunken girlie mates a few times cos they all love the Rex, and it never fails!! lol, I even had one of them once get a new sexy pair of knickers specifically for going out cos she knew I was coming to get her!! Made up for the fuel/oil/servicing/tyre bills in one fell swoop!! :Giggle :Giggle :Giggle

oh, and getting back on topic, I just ask passengers to swing their legs out and I give them a shove!

That lever for getting out looks like a great bit of kit. To me it looks like it would be quite secure based on the angle it fits into the hook and guessing the forces applied to it (down and back) then i think it would not slip at all, only scratch the hook thing a bit. And there looks like there is a notch to hold it inplace too
