Went out for a good blast today and everything seemed OK, even the squeaky brake problem I\'ve had for a while had sorted itself out.
I was doing the last couple of miles off boost to cool things down a bit and then I got a very loud squeeling noise, like a slipping fan belt. Dash lights flicked into ignition mode then back to normal. Turned the aircon off and continued home ( about 1 mile ). Popped the bonnet onto the catch whilst driving into the estate, as I stopped to reverse into the drive blue smoke pouring from the bonnet gap. Got it onto the drive and turned it off. Had to poor some water in just in case, slight panic moment :3Confused. I\'m not overly technical but it looked as if one of the belts ( smoke coming from behind the battery ) had over heated and started to catch fire. Either that or something had seized up and the belt was rubbing. Car was still running OK and driving fine on the last mile home!
After about 30 mins tried to start it and it wasn\'t having any of it, didn\'t sound happy to be honest.
It\'s a 92 type R, standard twins and has only done 17,700 miles on the original engine. Engine is pretty much stock apart from some hard pipes and an earthing kit.
I\'m hoping it\'s not too serious, thinking of towing it up to Pip @ WGT ( my closest specialist ) for him to have a look.
Any help or feedback would be appreciated.

Got any photo\'s of the affected area?
hmmm behind the battery? Well does your PAS belt look like its been rubbing like mad? is it worn down at all?
Is your oil level ok? Does it look like its dropped any oil?
I haven\'t but can get some, but wouldn\'t really show anything.
If you\'re looking at the battery ( standard setup ) the smoke was coming up from below and just behind the battery. Seemed to be coming from the belt at the bottom wheel.
The smell was very much burning rubber! Like the belt had stuck and caught fire!
Does this help?

well the bottom wheel is the aircon pump...the pump might have siezed while the aircon was on (ie clutch on the pump engaged) and hence the whole pulley siezed? Alhough that wont explain it not starting now
Hmm - armchair speculation:
Could whatever potentially caused the pump to fail also caused the clutch to jam \'on\'? If that were the case, then maybe the friction would be enough to prevent the starter-motor from doing it\'s job?
or ofcourse, if there were smoke, then there\'s a chance that something has melted, and now that it has cooled, it may have set in a way that prevents things turning over?
i had a similar problem when i fitted my apexi it locked the clutch on the air pump and i had smoke a squeeling sound and it had burnt out the belt so i removed the air pump and replaced the belts
hmm...maybe youre underestimating the power of the starter motor! its one powerful mofo! i reckon itd start the car with the aircon pump siezed...one way or another
another vote for seized air con pump
Remove the belt for the air con - it also powers the power steering pump, so you\'ll be without that, but you can check it like this. Then try and start it without the belt on, see what result you get. The belt is easy to remove.
Thanks for the input chaps.
The aircon doens\'t work and hasn\'t as long as I\'ve had it ( ie blowing cold air out ) but the fans work, so I use it to cool the water temps down on the cool down / in traffic. I think I\'ll investigate the aircon pump and belt! My ECU has a fault, so the cooling fans don\'t come on when they sould, hence the override with the aircon when I can see the needle on water temp gauge getting the wrong side of 90C.
Feeling more optimistic than I did yesterday now thanks. Had all sorts of horror senarios going through my head. Engine temps never got above 90C even after I switched it off so I\'m hoping that it hasn\'t caused any damage to the engine.
I can feel a trailored trip to Pip on the horizon! Anyone know any decent trailored transport companies operating in the midalnds ( I\'m in Leicestershire )
Thanks again.

You don\'t need the air con pump plugged in for the fans to work. What you should have done is unplugged the electrical connection to it, and continued as normal. The fans would still have some on.
Pip uses a guy called chris with his own trailor for transporting, dead nice guy, give WGT a ring and they\'ll pass his number onto you.
Thanks Kevin, I\'ll speak to Pip.

Thanks Nikp, I\'ll give it a shot.
Despite 2 years of ownership, it\'s still a learning curve, as luckily nothing really has gone wrong until now.
