Couple of quick pics of th new run around. \'88 N/A. Great motor runs very well. Went for an MOT last week only failed on exhaust hanger!!! TOP DRAW.
Few ideas but no major plans for this one. Tidy it up my be few other little bits. Front wings and bonnet need to be repainted so thats something for mr todo whilst i wait for the 20B manifold to be done.

DAM STRAIGHT TIM. truely cracking car had a massive smile all the way home. Didn\'t go the motorway route took all the back roads which added at least an extra hour. Well worth it :3gears-rh
Are those sprayed black turbo II rims I see? Im pretty sure those arn\'t EGi rims lol

Yes they are turbo II wheels.
Well this car is great fun. 114k on the clock and still runs like a top. New toys just ordered while i\'m waiting for bits on the 20B FD to turn up.
Twin 50mm ITBs on Racing beat Upper inlet manifold with TurboII top feed injectors
Greddy E-manage Ultimate
Racing beat True Dual headers, rest of the system we\'ll build in house
Will be rebuilding with Large street port and modded exhaust ports
will look at ignition with some MSD coils and custom leads in a little while.
Tanabe springs to go on and just thrown on some FD 16s. Should be goooood fun.
Brilliant engine on the EGi\'s, thats what I have in the 1st gen :D
Shaun
You are going to have a lot fo fun with that setup :D
We need pics when the toys arrive :D

Will be putting a OS Giken one in there in the future to suite the Knightsports Final drive gear kit.
looks like your spending quite a bit of money on this fc.
is it going to be used as a daily?
if not its screamming out for a bridge port :P
yeah its a daily driver so no bridge port this time. Persides i have the triple rotor one for fun :)
that is sooooo not fair
New exhaust turned up this morning. Just waiting for the RB manifold parts to turn up then will get cracking on the fabrication.

Not 100% sure weather i\'ll run the mid silencer yet but this is the general idea. A true Dual system.

But without the FAT jap styrl tips. Will keep them more low key
well mine used to have a single exit jap can with a similar looking header and mid silencer.....it was so loud i went for a TII cat back.
though am i right in thinking having two cans will keep the noise down?
also do you know how beneficial having a true dual system is?
Only just seen this!
I remember that car. Think I last saw it at the our Brooklands Spring Rotary Show probably 2006. Eek! (probably some pics on here somewhere) Never forget a 2nd gen! ;) It had some bad dings in wings then though!
Enjoy! :)
Was at Brooklands 2005 too - but you can\'t see it well on panaroramic shot on here as at back. :(
Had 2 new wings still couple of body bits that need to be done to get it looking stright.
The Benifits are due to the way the gas flows much smoother. I\'ll get it on the dyno.
Right was quiet cracked on with the mid section. Only part i can do without the headers as i\'m not 100% how far they come back so the rest will have to wait. couple of picks. Note the Rotor style flanges :chat sad i know!!

These ones have ports for 2 injectors however 4 injector versions are available.
Cheers
So your using the original primary fuel injector position too ??
Shaun
I was just thinking about that - the primaries sit on the centre iron don\'t they - and the secondaries would normally by on the LIM, but not sure the RB header has those positions, so guessing that having the injectors on the throttle bodies gives plenty of time for air / fuel to mix in the intake runners.
very nice looking set up, that lot cant be cheap for an old car. Be interesting to see what power you get compared to an rx8
I was pushing 190bhp on my old EGi running the stock throttle body and injectors. (That was with minor porting, no sleeves, headers, filter and a straight through 2.25" system)
We need lots of pics and videos as it progresses :)
Possibly this should be a projects thread?

howd you manage that!! i swear there was a post on rx7club about a year ago about the most powerful egi\'s, and the guys with street ports couldn\'t push above 170
How the hell were they only getting 170? Unless it was in California and they were still running the emmissions control gubbins?
that may have been it, but yea no one was near 190.
am i right in thinking you need to re map the car to take it to 190? if so, maybe they just didnt map them :P
I did some creative work with the AFM ;)
Bear in mind that if you go down the route I did you need to do some major buggering about to get it through an MOT.
I would sure hope to see more than 170hp!!! Will be going with a large street port on this on as its a daily driver.
Good work mate. :Thumbs-up
Glad you\'ve got something to keep you entertained as the other project takes its time :)
Adam
Agh how these things always come round to bite you!!
I have actually finished all the exhaust system now, headers aswell. Got it all on lined up nicely. toped up the levels as water and oil seemed a little low. Out of the filler neck spilled a load of thick black water. Checked the oil nice runny black water!
Time for a rebuild me thinks. Will pop a couple of pics up of the exhaust later
would be really interested in this mate
as ive just got myself a EGI
an iam not sure on the power front an stuff
currently it has this
-Hi flow manifold (custom made,an bought from Rotechniks so it\'s not a dog)
-straight through exhaust, just has the rear cans (oh its loud lol:Giggle) (but i get some MASSIVE pops, bangs an cracksles from it,is that normal??)
-Air pump has been removed and blocked off
-Magnecor leads
-FD Spark plugs
-k&N Panel filter
an i understand from demonRx4\'s posts that the engine was re-built at 77000,its now on 94000
so effectivly 17000 old since the re-build
cheers

Having the twin system can be good for HP as long as the twin pipes join at the right length from the downpipe/mid section. This can either give you more or less torque and is very much noticeable.
car is going to be awsome and I am so glad that the FC\'s at the moment are so very popular.
Quote from: pdtaylor18;573591Having the twin system can be good for HP as long as the twin pipes join at the right length from the downpipe/mid section. This can either give you more or less torque and is very much noticeable.
There is no join. True dual all the way through :driving
now thats interesting, how does that compare against a \'joined\' system? I suppose at least having a chamber have its own pipe will mean it will not affect the other. Think maybe in a piston car thats quite crucial and sometime a little back pressure can be useful but in a rotary we want to get all those gases out as quickly as possible.
There have been a few discussions on here regarding two singles vs a 2 into 1. It seems that the two singles gain less total power, but create a different exhaust note - making it easier to get around track day regs. (The true twin system also gives a wicked idle noise :Giggle)

thats what i was confused about, though i hear you do gain more power if your running a bridge port, maybe a street port?
She\'ll have a large street port so we\'ll have to wait and see for the dyno i suppose. Dispite the engine going i\'m building this one after hours as its my daily car so i need it on the road. Few days she should be rolling again.

sorry for being newbish. But apart from an air filter, whats the difference between the throttle bodies and a standard set up? Looks like you get more air in but theres no afm which confuses me :P
A microtech setup or similar you dont need AFM\'s the ECU will sort that. With a setup like something above you are getting as much air as possible without restrictive pipes and bends etc. Nice clean air getting straight to where its needed (as long as you have a good intake). Its cleaner, easier and should give more BHP than a standard intake design.
ah right, aftermarket ecu i see.
thanks for that. what kinda extra power can throttle bodies make over a standard aftm+ filter setup?
We will be running a greddy Emanage ultimate on this one. To he honest as with the other mods we have never run a set up like this before so increases in BHP i couldn\'t comment will have to wait for run in and dyno for full details!
As above the Stock in take has lots of bends, filters/butterflies for the air to get through so the flow is slowed and not at its optimum. This way is much cleaner and can flow more than the stock item.
i see, im wishing i could do this to mine now!!
anyhu good job!! it was pretty dam quick!

Quote from: Brett;576055What are you doing with the exhaust ports/sleeves? :)
The Exhaust ports have had the same treatment they too have got on the James material loss propgram :chat
I have also just realised that there is sealant all over the side of the block... must get that off!
Are you going to fire here up on Tuesday then? :yes
Quote from: dthebuk;575105sorry for being newbish. But apart from an air filter, whats the difference between the throttle bodies and a standard set up? Looks like you get more air in but theres no afm which confuses me :P
AFM is there to measure Air flow, and hence setup fuelling for the injectors. However, you can use other techniques to work out fuelling if the AFM is no longer there :)
With a MAP sensor (even on an N/A) - you can do speed/density mapping - so the absolute air pressure in the manifold is used to calculate air flow based on RPM
Quote from: Brett;576062Are you going to fire here up on Tuesday then? :yes

Well the lump is back in. Should get the wideband tomorrow so ill plum that in and fit the Emanage Ultimate. Then we should have ignition :chat
cheers for that prof.
quite intrigued to see what power you make, you gunna get this car dyno\'d?
yeah will do once she\'s run it ands mapped prpoerly.
And it all goes horribley wrong!!!!!
Got the whole think back together ECU/wide band done everything. The issues started with a simple throttle linkage problem. Then the system was sticking open and not closing. Sloved that issue. Filled her up with oil. Smooth sailing as you would expect. Then the water. Half way through doing the water i noticed that the system wasn\'t filling up. Checked the oil.... Nasty milky ....e. The same problem as before the rebuild water in the oil and vice verser. Had a cup of tea a ponder and quick converasion with Tim at RX Motors he said best course of action engine out check front and rear side plate to see if the core plugs had gone.
So pulled the motor back out and nothing all still in place. Started re-examining the side and intermidiate housings. Nothing. Had a glance inside the side plate (thats between the 2 faces that make contact with the rotors) HUGE spilt. Water could poor through!!! Massive school boy error missing that one! Really kicked myself after. Stupid stupid stupid.
Long and short is that now thise plates are screwed i can re evaluate the "project". Will be using turbo 2 intermediate plates now making the engine a 4 port instead of the 6port the EGI usually has. Then a large ports and planning permission for some bridging. Will also be making a custom inlet manifold for the ITB\'s.
So stupid mistake maybe a little blessing in disguise in the end.
Awww that is total guttage dude. sorry to hear about that.. :(
So was the split noticeable on the outside? If it was that big surely you would have spotted that? Mind you I suppose that when you are examining the enine following strip you are more concerned with the internal condition. Bad luck fella but at least now you can do a few more things too it. Strange how these things happen!! I too was quite content with my orange FC, engine back out for a rebuilt after doing zero miles and I want to do quite a few more things than i planned initially. Although mine has been a year in the making why dont we just do the things we really really want to do first time?
Keep the pics coming as it does give a lot of inspiration to us all.
No not visable from the outside. I\'ll get a pic up to show you what i mean later tomorrow. Best way to explain it is if you have your intermeidiate plate (middle of the three) you have the 2 faces that the front and rear rotors rotate against. It was inbetween the 2 faces that had the split through to the water ways. Pic lifted off the web of a inter plate with arrow.

Trog-tastic :D
God damn, I wish i knew how to as well as what to do with all this, i guess it comes down to experience and plenty of practice yeah?
Bit of money as well, buying the spares is not cheap to do a setup like this when you take into account the engineering that has to be done. Nice to see people doing stuff like this. Very inspirational.
how long can these engines last with a PP? is it drastically shorter or just a bit?
i know its a bit of an open ended qu, but would just like an idea :D
As with any of the rotary lumps being N/A helps with the life span of the engine. Also the use of the engine i.e. Race/track/road. I\'m not 100% on the lift span of the PP N/A engine so i\'ll have to wait and see.
JM Fuel rail in place. Wasn\'t where i wanted it to go but the throttle linkage was in the way so next best place.

You know that when I first looked at the angle of those inlets I thought it was too high but with the alternator on it looks just perfect, nice job. Aside the BHP it will be one hell of an engine just to look at and not many like it at all. Not sure if you mentioned but power steering? or are you going electric. I was looking at ways to modify the existing pump housing and put it lower down to where the aircon pump goes, frees up a lot of room up top.
Not 100% yet on the power steering. As it will be used alot i will more than likely put it back in. I was thinking of moving it down but will have to look the options once the lump is back in. After all its only a matter of getting a longer/shorter belt and making/modifing a bracket.
I only have a small amount of wiring left to do. Tidy up the engine loom as i have lots of extra plugs now that won\'t be used. I just want to hear the thing running should sound LURVELY.
Its gonna be superb. I just cleaned my loom of unwanted wires and now I have secured a Emanage Ultimate so need to do it all again now. !! Worth it though.
While since we updated on thise one.
After finding that i had NO fuel pressure at all and No time to do much work on this little beasty i have ordered new pipe for fuel rail (smaller bore), fuel pump and better pressure regulator hopefully we\'ll be runnig in properly very soon.
Mircotech is going in tomorrow instead of the E Manage Ultimate so a nice few hours for wiring the engine for me. Totally changed the Exhaust on this as the true dual won\'t be appropriate for the Peripheral port set up.
Pic on the bench during welding, one after with the front half nearly completed with the silencer.

Quote from: dthebuk;601149i can\'t wait to see/hear this. What power are you aiming for? and where\'s the redline gunna be :D ?
All depends where peak torque/power is but its balanced for around 10k will go more though id required.
As far as expected power don\'t really have a target. Just seeing what happens. this is a kind of \'test run\' before i do the 20B.
I\'m like you though. Can\'t wait to hear it.
A test run before the 20b??? you going to reuse this engine or start a new one?
i believe the man owns a 20b fd....wait a sec, does that mean you\'re gunna PP that too!!!

Fantastic work :)

I\'m thinking PP on the 20B too. Not 100% yet.

Living yes. Workshop in Caterham.
Made up the new loom today for the Microtech so thats ready to go in. Pretty much ready to fire up once thats in. Just waiting on a set of new trumpets with injector ports as i\'m moving the primaries onto the ports on the ITB\'s and the secondaries to a pre butterfly position to allow more time for air/fuel to mix.
Electric fan to go on and debating about doing a electric water pump to get the super minimalist look. But concerns of electric water pump life.
Distributer set up has been lost in favour of electronic ignition and FC crank angle sensor. Works 10x better with the mircotech that way.
Wheels & tyres to go on tomorrow to 18x8.5 the front and 18x10\'s the rear so it will look nice and FAT :chat
