Title: Exhaust fumes in the car
Post by: allstaruk on July 15, 2008, 10:45:07 PM
Right i have got the car running properly again but, while just idling on the driveway it smells very rich from behind, this is to be expected thought i assume.

But more importantly after driving for it I can smell exhaust in the car and more so after a good high speed thrash, it slightly stings my eyes, what are the most likely causes of this?

exhuast leak - likely midpipe area coming through shifter area or engine bay area coming through vents etc

Cool whats the best way of going about finding this, it doens\'t appear to be the vents as ti gets better with the cold air tuned on, and the exhust does sound noiser in the mid section but I just put this down to a new downpipe

Its also worth checking that you have the rear hatch shut properly and no drain plugs missing from the bosy work - a missing plug in the spare wheel well could easily draw in exhaust fumes. :wave

Are you running twins or singal? If your running a singal then its likely to be the gasket at the rear of the turbo. If your running twins then you\'ve got a little more investigating to do.:yes

simply take the mid section off & replace gaskets/add exhaust sealant.

alternatively tighten the bolts/smear some putty round the joins in the exhaust.

I have this on mine - so much so that if i take the car out for a 5min spin my skin and clothes stink of fuel.

I have a skyline too and that when it was running lean there was no smoke - mapped it and now it smells but not inside. my rx runs pig rich and is like yours however i did solve the problem with the stink when i had a leak between downpipe & cat.

failing the above a friend of mine had a blocked cat and this somehow stunk out the cabin.

Did you ever solve this?

I am finding that there is a smell in the cabin that was not there before. To me it smells more of hot oil than exhaust but when I get back indoors my wife suggests I have a shower - well really :Hammer

It has been suggested that it could be the tail pipes on the back box being too short and fumes are being sucked in to the boot.

There\'s always something ........
