Title: Well it finally happend
Post by: TiddlesRX7 on July 14, 2008, 08:25:18 AM
Well after 18 months of ownership, my car has finally let me down and made me late for work. Got in it put my foot on the clutch and nothing. The pedal went straight to the floor. I tried pumping the pedal but couldn\'t get a strong enough pedal to select a gear. I\'m presuming its the master cylinder but at this stage I don\'t know anything for sure. Any info or help on what to/how to check is welcomed as always.

Could also be the clutch hose - leaking.

First off check your clutch fluid level, if you haven\'t already - if you\'ve got fluid then it could be any of the following:

1) Master Cylinder
2) Slave Cylinder
3) Leaking flexible hose (it sits behind the stock intercooler, on the bulkead - kind of passenger side of middle)
4) Blocked pipe between the above - although if you\'ve pedal travel that doesn\'t sound likely
5) Clutch fork - bent, lose or broken
6) Pilot bearing

I\'m sure there\'s more, but that\'s a good start.  If you can get someone else to operate the clutch, you should be able to see if the clutch fork moves.

As Prof says, the first thing to check is your fluid level. You\'ve most likely got a leak on either your slave, master or pipe and it\'s got to the point where you haven\'t got enough fluid to operate. Topping it up and a quick bleed may well get you rolling again as it may only be a small leak.

Had a really quick look before I had to leg it to work. The pipe that runs along the bulk head looked like it had oil residue on it a bit but not a lot. The clutch fluid bottle (the one above the turbo?) appered to have fluid in it.
Think i\'ve had a blonde moment. That bottle will be the break fluid one won\'t it.

You got 2 bottles - the one on the Brake Master cylinder - that is brakes, but the FC\'s have a seperate clutch reservoir - again it sits behind the stock intercooler on the bulkhead - about the size of an old 35mm film can.

On a seperate note, how come the modifications and results thread has been locked? I would have thought it would have been up with the other stickys as it would save a lot of FAQ\'s from people like me!

Ok well it looks like its the slave cylinder. I managed to get it off the car and the rubber boot was full of old manky fluid. So I guess its time to go and get the one off my spare car and try that. Grinder price! I also noticed a plastic type hose below the clutch one that looked like it might have been leaking. Not looked into it yet or even sure what it is.

Just read \'Grinder\'s\' write up, good stuff!

Then i noticed that he uses his intercooler as a tool tray as such, and that\'s what i do too! Does anybody else do this? It\'s proper handy. lol

Anyways,

Adereed - I had a similar incident. Sat at the traffic lights, lights turned green, went to select gear and i couldn\'t!

Managed to speed-match, and coast it out of the way.
The clutch pedal just goes straight to the floor and doesn\'t lift back up without using your toe to bring it up.

In my case it was the master cylinder. Was advised to also change the the pipes and slave, but money was tight.

30min fix.
but akward to get to bolts from i underneath dashboard.

if you are taking it all apart - might aswell get a braided hose aswell for it

I have heard that the clutch fork can crack accross the dowel holes, that might explain why you can\'t get a gear and the pedel goes right down I guess.

That can happen but mainly on those who get beefed up clutches and the pressure over time is simply too much.  All the cars I have had have suffered from this, some did it because they hgad been sat for months and months. Pretty much the only thing to cure it was the Slave cylinder. You can buy them cheap from the states, think I got my brake and clutch ones for about £50 delivered. Certainly not alot more. That included the braided hose as well !!

I can get a Clutch slave cyl for about £18 but then Unipart did not list one for a turbo, that apparently is the EGI one.

EK Brakes in Lancashire can supply them.
They\'re not cheap though.
£70 just for the master cylinder.
Made by \'blueprint\'

I think they quoted me £40ish for the slave cylinder.

Well in the end I robbed the one off my spare car. It seemed ok so I just cleaned it up and popped it back together. I put it on the car earlier today and its working a treat. It even bled easily, bonus!. I even had spare time to find out what was knocking on the front corner of the car. So now im back on the road and happy again. Cheers for all your help.
