Title: Oil Question
Post by: logicalChimp on July 12, 2008, 09:54:34 PM
Hi

I feel kinda silly asking this question - but where is the oil filler cap? :o

Is it the one under the strut brace, on the passenger side?

cheers

Ok - follow-on numpty question:  How do I tell when I have put enough oil in?

I\'ve just poured around 2.5 litres down the throat of the filler, and it looks as empty as it did before I started...

I pretty certain I got the right spot, as it seems to be idling marginally better (could just be the weather tho :D), and the exhaust is smelling more oily (closer to how it smelt when it came back from Rotechniks ;) )

Still, before I started the oil was half-way down the dip stick (that is, half-way between the full and empty markings) - so I wasn\'t expecting it to take quite so much oil to top it up...

Any ideas?

Sorry, are you serious?

Keep checking the dipstick! I might be wrong (someone please confirm) that from the lower level on the dipstick to full is a litre of oil?

If yours was at half and you added 2.5 litres, mmmm

forget how much you can see and check dipstick constantly, as Rob said 2.5ltrs has probably well over filled the oil, in which case you could do more damage than leaving it at half way.
From half way I would only expect to use approx 1ltr of oil.
The oil being half way down should not affet your tick over that would suggest something else, and the new smell of oil is probably where you have over filled it.
Check it now and if necessary you may have to drain some.

Right

yup - I completely over-filled it (oil was nearly 4 inches above the full mark :o)

Just got the RAC out to drain it for me, so now I have a plastic basin of engine oil sat in my kitchen, being fragrant.

I know i\'m not meant to just tip it down the drain any more - so whats the best way to dispose of it?  Do dumps etc have tanks for it?  or do councils provide facilities or something?

And does anyone know of anywhere near clapham that might take it (just to save me have to walk through the yellow pages or wotnot)

cheers

Our local tip has oil containers you can dump oil into, although I live nowhere near you. However, it may be the same for where you live. Otherwise you could ring your local council and ask for advice from them? They may charge you to come and take it away, or just be able to point you in the right direction.

Oil bank line: 0800 663 366 will give you your nearest recycling centre that will take used engine oil. Thought I better tell you this.. empty the used oil into the drum at the recycling centre as I once saw this genius throw the container full of used engine oil into the drum and ended up having to put his arm in and pull it out.

Cheers for that, Jin

They pointed me to a pretty handy website: http://www.wastedirectory.org.uk/

so now, I got a nice 7:00am drive tomorrow (to beat traffic), to ditch the oil before work... still - better that than leaving it to stink the kitchen out over the weekend :D
