Title: White Smoke on Startup
Post by: BlitzBoy on March 18, 2004, 10:44:30 AM
Guys last week my car started to make a lots of white smoke on startup, after a minute it will disappear and no smoke at all and it will run fine, it also started to have startup problems ie one rotor for a minute as well. I have cured the one rotor startup problem with new set of plugs and it startsup first time on the key, BUT I still get the white smoke for a minute!! its looks like a huge cloud on a cold day and get some strange looks from my neigbours! any ideas what could be wrong???

I hate to say this but that does sound like some water seepage into the rotor housing.  Early(ish) stages of water seal failure.

When things get worse you\'ll experience coolant problems as the combustion pressure begins to get through to the coolant system.

It\'s worth getting it looked at by one of the engine builders (wgt, carl, rx-motors, re:worx, etc) but probably won\'t show up on a compression test.

Pressure testing the coolant system with the plugs out may show this up as there will be water coming out of the holes but in doing that you will have finished off the seal and need it replacing.

Mine coped for around 4 months of daily usage with dodgy seals but eventually I got it rebuild before it failed completely! (still cost an arm and a leg though)

Seems to be a lot of this going round recently.  Wonder if the cold weather has some effect - i.e. shrinkage of the block/end-plates letting water through?

damn, well i will pootle on, as performance hasnt been affected, plus it feels quicker with the new plugs. I better get saving for the next four months, its not consuming any water just yet.
Iain how much did your rebuild cost ya and did you get any porting done?

is it like a cloud of white smoke?

mine chucks out a small amount but only for like the first 15 sec then its fine? (maybe its just condensation)

I get that too....again after 15 20 secs its gone. My coolant level is always fine when running (touch wood) and it stays at the same temp when its up to temp as well.....here\'s hoping its condensation!!

Steam like fumes for 10-20 secs are normal for cars with a cat i thought? I think its just condensation in the cat.....(no expert on cats) but i\'m sure i have seen posts about white steam on start up before....

Shaq, if you are running a with a cat i don\'t think you have anything to worry about...yours will be like mine, a more steam like gas rather than a smoke like blitzboys.

White smoke is bad, but white steam i think is ok if it goes away after a few secs. If it does it when the engine is at normal running temperature then you do have something to worry about!

mine had white smoke too, then the engine went:(

but mine had no cat and had smoke for the first 2-3 till the water was upto temp, however mine was in advanced stages of seal failure.

at first it was just a wee amount of smoke for a few sec\'s though:(

Mine smokes for 30 seconds on startup and smells like fumes so dont think that could be steam. But had the engine rebuilt around 2000 miles ago so i hope its nothing serious

How can you tell if it starts on one rotor or not?

it runs really rough you cant even blip the throttle properly, but i cured that with new plugs. Well i can put with the white smoke on startup for the time being.

Carl how much for a rebuild with an extended street port?

Right im not sure if I have a water seal failure, two reasons
Temps are fine
And its not eating any coolant!!!

Its been hard to restart recently, ie flooding symptoms, I would drive for half an hour switch the car off, go back to it five minutes later and be very hard to start! then it would start with a very thick white/grey smoke like unburnt fuel

I was thinking do I have an injector leak?
Whats the easiest way to test for a water seal failure?

just sounds like low ciompression to me

Mine didn\'t eat coolant either, but the second rotor was buggered

I get white smoke for the first min on startup, and i still have the cat.

It starts fine, and i dont seem to have any other problems, but its hard to tell because my clutch is screwed.

what is considered good compression, and what is considered buggered?

Deano?

white smoke at start up is perfectly normal as long as it diappears after 2minutes or so

cheers Dave...

...I think virtually all us \'newbie\' owners s**t our pants for a moment!!!I get white smoke for a minute or so, but that\'s it.There\'s no more smoke for the rest of the day/journey...my car has had a full rebuild and new turbo pack -courtesy of the previous owner :-)) 8000miles ago.

I "think" good compression is over 6, but don\'t quote me

Fooked is about 2.8 which was what mine is

tell me bout it
So should it not smoke/steam at all for the rest of day once it\'s warmed up? Just i\'m sure mine would still be a bit white even after i\'d giving it a bit of death then been off for a few hours then restarting....
Si (paranoia is strong in him (http://mysmilies.ipbfree.com/s/contrib/blackeye/hihi.gif) lol)

Si
Wheres your car ?

They chuck out a bit of white smoke when cold until they warm up slightly, usually disappears after 3 minutes max I\'d say
Can\'t say mine lasts longer than about 1 minute

Smoke at any other times baaaaaad kaaaay ! :)

Carl Hayward is rebuilding mine next week while I am in Africa, going with standard spec, which is fine to run with my mods

Carl is very helpful on the phone and I would reccomend talking to him

Geff at Reworx is also a helpful chap

what rwhp are u aiming for Dave?
werent u tempted in doing a mild street port?
Africa!! bring back some jungle skins with ya and do the interior of ur Rex, I quite fancy the Cheetah look lol

I\'ll be happy with the RWHP I have/(had) which was 272bhp, plenty fast enough I thought

porting is another £500 so I thought I\'d leave it, its already delayed buying my R6 ! :(

I will be collecting skins and stuff to kit out the Rex with don\'t worry !

Dave how many miles u gonna have to run it in for, will it be ready for Rotorstock?

Yeah I think I will be going with Carl to get my rebuild done, defo going to get the Extended street port done as well, going to go for Standard Mazda seals as I wont be running more then 350 rwhp, I think I only will consider the ceramic seals if I was going for monster bhp like 450 plus, I think I will leave that for big bhp boys like the two Garys and Ross to fight it out at Rotorstock.

yeah u could get some African village elder to cast some voodoo curse on the skyline boys to get slow times this year lol

hmm you would check with Carl, but I suspect the different types of porting cost goes up coz the amount of work involved.
Plus the more extreme the porting, idle goes up and the power band moves up. Been reading How to Modify RX7s book last night about the different porting. Normal Street Port you can keep idle and power band more or less as stock, Extended street port moves the power band upwards and the idle goes to about 900-1000 rpm. Bridgeport which is manic not for street methinks, idle about 1500-2000 prm, peak power around 13000 rpm!!! just quoting what I read in the book could be wrong!

hmm Iain you could be on to something, all those moggys on our streets could be a cheap source of car fur lol
