Title: Road tax question
Post by: Hi RX7 on July 12, 2008, 08:15:09 AM
Hi,
As a fairly new owner of an RX7 I have read a few posts about the road tax band of the RX7, mine at the moment is taxed as a 1300 and would like to keep it that way, are there any pitfalls in say putting a personal plate or engine rebuild that can alter its present tax status?

Hi

I did both an engine rebuild and bought a plate for my RX and niether effected my 1300 status.

So can\'t see it being an issue.

John

Thanks for the replies, I just read somewhere a while back that the DVLA were trying to close the the \'loophole\' but I guess thats for new vehicles entering the country is this correct?

Yep, in fact I believe they have already implemented it.

Got my renewal this week, £120 for 12 months, one of the few things that\'s cheaper on a rotary than a conventional engine:driving

For some maybe, mine and many others are classed as 2600cc and therefore have to pay double the tax!

Nope - I\'ve got a \'92, imported around 2000, and it\'s marked as a 2600 - and even though i\'ve just put a new engine in, they wouldn\'t accept that I would put in a smaller one, so it\'s still marked as a 2600 :(

Depends when it was imported really. IIRC anything within the last two years won\'t get away with being registered as a 1300. Mine certainly didn\'t - came complete with a nice letter from the DVLA with \'proof\' from mazda about why it should be 2616.

When you could get away with it however, it\'ll only be put down as 1300 if the original importer / first owner wrote it down as that. As said above, colour, engine and personal plates shouldn\'t affect you.

Either way though you\'re only saving yourself £65 (I pay £185 instead of £120) which isn\'t all that much on the grand scale of things, it\'s not even a tank of petrol!. At least you don\'t have a 2001+ registered car and paying £400! then I could understand the scramble for cheap tax. lol

Right I have just got my V5 back from the DVLA after changing my plate and it still reads 1300cc for the engine size.
