When you take your engine out what fluids do you need to replace?
What I mean is that obviously the coolant will be spilled when you take out the engine, what about the differential, power steering and gearbox fluids, do they come out as well?
I\'m trying to work out what else I need to do to my car at the same time that the engine is rebuild.
How much should I expect to pay for changing all the fluids on my car while the engine is being done?
Thanks for your answers.
5 ltrs of oil £15
Oil Filter £5
5 Ltrs Blue or green antifreeze £15
5 Ltrs deironised water £3
1 Ltrs power steering fluid or auto transmission fluid (same stuff) £5
The thing is that my car is going to have the engine rebuild and brake discs, brake pads and braided brake-lines fitted.
As the brake lines will be changed, the brake fluid will be changed in the quoted price.
The thing is that I don\'t know what fluids are changed normally as part of a rebuild and was thinking about changing then all.
I guessed that the differential oil and the power steering oil are not necessarily changed as part of a rebuild and wanted to know how much should I expect to pay to have it done.
Thanks
At a guess, the gearbox, diff and power steering wouldn\'t be touched and so the fluids wouldn\'t be changed unless asked for.
Leave power steering alone: disconnect the pump from the engine, but keep in engine bay. Gearbox remains in place, and no fluids are touched. Same goes for diff. The gearbox needs a \'chock\' to keep it in place, otherwise it\'ll drop on the floor and bend the diff mounts to the wrong angle and put undue stress on it. (The chock is just a bit of wood between subframe and bottom of gearbox bell housing)
sorry to hijack but where do you get 5 ltrs of deironised water for £3 from
I get mine free from my wife who works for a water company! :D
How much should I expect to pay to get the diff, gearbox and power steering fluids changed at a garage?
Thanks
Shouldnt take more than half hour, most of the cost will be the fluids which could vary a lot from garage to garage. Or you could provide them yourself ofc.
Thanks Rich.
I\'ll do it myself then. I was quoted £150 to change the fluids and that seemed to be to expensive for me.
I meant half hour for a workshop btw, easy on a ramp, less so on your back on the drive :)
As I said, fluid costs will be a chunk of the cost from a garage.

But still possible! :p
That\'s how i did my gearbox oil!! :D
