Title: Engine Install - Initial Start up
Post by: Looney on July 06, 2008, 08:27:15 PM
Hello! Not been on here for donkeys, long story short, moved house, using mobile internet (aint all that good), and just started to settle in.

Anyway:

I\'ve just about finished installing my FD Engine, and want to double check on how to get the fuel pump to prime to ensure fuel lines are up to pressure and full of fuel. I\'ve been told to short out a pin on the diag plug but not sure which pin, and after a couple of weeks of looking up wiring diagrams its been a headache to work out.

I\'m pretty sure how to disconnect the ignitor so I can turn the engine over to prime up the oil ways etc, so thats pretty cool. Sorry for the lack of names on parts, as I\'m mainly a carb based man, and kinda getting in to injection engines now.

Just to add to the story, the engine was from a later model (which I didn\'t initially realise), and after alot of head scratching worked out why the loom did not mach the box connectors, nor a couple of cabin connectors, though it plugged into the ECU nicely....lol. Well, old loom will be re fitted to rectify this next weekend.

FD3, 1993 (k reg) import.

Any help and advice muchos appreciated!

Nice to know it\'s nearly theere Len :D

If you do want to prime the pump, connect a jumper wire in the diag box to F/P and GND and then turn the key to number 2 so the lights come on and you\'ll here the pump.  This is a good way to check for leaks also :D

Don\'t rec the car for a while just let it idle until up to temp and check everything cos it\'s been sitting there for a long while and being a donor engine you dont know how far up the OMP the oil goes :D

Good luck with it matey anyway and give me a ring if you need any assistance and hopefully see you next weekend in it then :)

+1

You can just short the terminals fp & gnd. This primes the fuel lines, but whenever you turn on the ignition, it does this anyway

If you want to be really sure, just turn the key to pos. 2 and back to 1 again a couple of times before you fire it up. that way the pump will prime a couple of times.
That\'s what we did and it fired into life beautifully first time, what a relief!

Cheers guys! Not as complicated as first thought. No different to a stand alone electric pump then.

I take it \'rec\' should have read rev? lol. I think I can do that for a couple of weeks, but I know the heavy right foot syndrome may kick in after that....dont ask, I\'m still a kid at heart, and with a couple of grey hairs now!!!

Canna wait to get it running and on the road! Then when I stop spending money on rubbish I can start buying mods for this! Roll on the weekend! Should hopefully give you all an update next week on this too! Must admit its coming along alot quicker than I expected too! Especially when I get off my lazy behind.

Scott, cheers! I hate badgering people on the phone for advice, but I will be on the blower if something bamboozals me again! I\'ve looked at the origonal loom and this will fit like a glove, even the 2 cabin plugs fit (blue 1 and white 1).

Nice one mate, glad the original loom fits :) good job i kept it then lol

Oh and yeah it should have read "rev" yeah :D

Just a note, but the fuel pump on an FD does not run if you just turn the key to position 2, it only runs when you start the engine, which is why there is a method of manually priming it by shorting out the terminals :)
