Title: Loud thunk from the rear!
Post by: RemarkLima on July 06, 2008, 06:34:13 PM
Hey all,

Finally took my FD for a drive the other day, barely turned over but still fired up so happy days there :D

Everything else seems pretty much as it was left (except for the 3mm of dust all over the car!). The only thing was a very loud metal sounding thunk from the rear.

Big bump / speed hump\'s it#\'d not happen but the slower bumps and the rises in A roads etc I\'d get a really loud thunk... Any ideas what it could be?

I\'m thinking a bushing (hopfully not the dreaded pillowballs just yet!), but thought I\'d ask to see if ti was anything common on these?

Cheers,
Mark

did you just hear it once or does it do it quite a bit? how long has the car been standing for? did you leave the handbrake on? when i left mine standin for a while and put the handbrake on i heard a bit of a clunk when i pulled off, i think because i left the handbrake on the pads where solid against the disk thats why i got a clunk pulling off, i always leave the handbrake off now when leaving it standing

Nah, it\'s pretty constant, I did leave the handbrake off for that very reason (although it has been kept dry in a dusty barn so shouldn\'t have rusted too much!).

It definately something suspension related and I\'d say the shocks but they\'re all OK (recently refurbed) and operating as they should by the feel of it...

I\'d put money on shot pillowbushes. Common problem on al fd\'s

****... The most sodding expensive part to go as well!

OK, where\'s the cheapest place to get them from? May as well do all 6 and was thinking of getting the poly bushes group buy, so may as well just update all the bushes for the whole car.

They are an hyundai/mazda car dealer, but ray crowe owns or used to own a couple of fd\'s, and he knows all the part numbers off the top of his head. All in delivered, your looking at £240 for the pillowbushes providing you dont get stung on customs

THEN you may as well do the full kit superpro bushes, so another £250 ish. There is the GB on here http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49195  or the GB on the us forum http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=551122 which works out cheaper PLUS, you get the diff mounts on the us GB

Oh man, it\'s all money im afraid

If the 5 people make the GB then I\'ll have the UK ones... But a quick update on the thunk.

It sounds pretty much exactly like when a new tyre is inflated onto a rim and it pops into place. I\'m wondering if it\'s the diff mounts or something?
