Title: Air temp sensor giving weird readings
Post by: Kash_ on July 05, 2008, 12:45:33 PM
Hi guys, not sure what might be causing this but hoping someone can shed some light?

My air temp sensor gives some weird readings on the Power FC Commander... sometimes it will be okay e.g. 30 when crusing then other times it will be 5 or -10., etc.. I\'ve seen it do a countdown from 10 to -2 lol... it seems to happen randomly... is this the start of a faulty air temp sensor?

My water temp sensor did the same thing, resulted in a broken engine.

sorry to hear that.... :( was the reason for the weird readings because the sensor had gone?

Not really sure but it was stripped down and put back together been ok ever since. I would imagine air temp sensor would cause the same problem if doing the same thing running to rich or to lean for the real airtemp.

Had this happen to me with the air temp sensor changed it and has been fine ever since.

what sort of temp sensor is it?  Is it a thermocouple type?  The wire could be pinched as it looks as though it is going to ground.  Either that or it is Fubar\'d

Yeah, you gotta be careful if the ECU is seeing strange readings. It can base timing and fuelling on the air temp.

Now that its all good thats fine. I was going to say if you have a PFC ECU with the hand controller you could have gone to the ETC section & looked at the sensor page. It would have highlighted the Air temp sensor to show you it was fubar.

Remember this the next time you have faults with sensors...PFC will show you by highlighting it.

Yep very good feature....I had already checked this, but whenever I looked at it, it said the sensor was fine.... just my luck that it used to go weird randomly, moreso when I was driving instead of on idle....

You can just leave it on that screen while driving to monitor it. Anyway its all good now.

Very handy, thanks! Now to work out what all the abbreviations mean...

It tells you in the manual. If you dont have one I will email you one if you like.

Do you guys know how to setup your watches so that you can monitor up to 8 things at once? Id say 4 is enough. The 4 most important to me are Boost, Water temp, Air temp & Duty cycle. You can set it up to record the highest values. When its in this mode you will see smaller dark boxes to the right of the larger numbers...these boxes show the peak of everything & can be reset each time with the push of the right arrow.

To get them to display I think you push the up arrow or down...wont do anything to the map when you are in the watch mode so dont worry about pushing them. If you push the left arrow it will pause the lot...to undo just push it again.

If anyone has difficulty understanding this I will make a small clip or just send pics.
