Title: Anyone have pix of an engine torque damper fitted?
Post by: probedb on June 28, 2008, 05:00:48 PM
You know those things with the piston?

Got one from ebay but he doesn\'t supply fitting instructions.

Any help appreciated :)

Ta!

Paul.

i guess looking at that mine is on the wrong side of the bracket connecting it to the body, will have to change that

Cheers everyone :) Not sure what make my damper is. The seller\'s name on ebay is soledim. It\'s currently at my folks so not had a proper look.

Car is currently sitting with a flat so waiting to get 2 new rear tires then got to get 4 new discs and pads w/ braided lines fitted as well as a diff brace.....everything went at once!! Oh yeah and I have 16 spark plugs at home waiting and need to put 4 new ones in I think.

they are very easy to fit, they bolt onto the back of the plenum with two bolts that should be already on the car, then the bracket you can see in the pics bolts onto the body in two existing holes then you bolt the damper onto the bracket, job done

Shall I continue the trend, then! What is it about red FDs with dampers, then?

Lol.  Dont know mate, but you definately win the award for clarity of picture! :D

My green one is FEED..... Which means it\'s exactly the same as each of the other dampers but tripple the price. lol.

Excellent....I shall see if I can fit it when I get it today :)

:rollin
A bit like my bonnet lifters are eBay classics from Australia. Which means they aren\'t nice green ones like the Teins, but they do cost a third as much and work exactly the same! Funny how much a sticker can add to the price of stuff! :D

You use Carling Black Label as brake fluid?

cool.

Well what a load of poop. The damper in mine had no play in it what so ever due to having a nice big lump of plastic inside it. When this is removed there\'s so little force required to do move it that there\'s no way it can do it\'s job.

Anyone know if the Feed one/other decent ones use a proper damper?

from what i have heard a lot of these are in no way a damper just a solid bar made to look like a damper i think the more expensive ons are though

I\'ve got the expensive FEED one, I did think it was a lot of money for the extra sticker on the case! But it\'s definately a proper (I\'m guess gas filled) damper... Very stiff mind, but certainly a damper.

I\'ve got the FEED one too, it\'s just nylon bushes in a tube!  it is very hard to move by hand and definitely reduces engine movement and gear changes seem smoother.

I fitted mine with nylon washers between the cylinder and the brackets (cheap from halfrauds) to reduce vibration and it worked a treat.  You still need to tighten it occasionally to stop it rattling.

Attach it under the bracket on the body or it will foul your bonnet.

Hmmm... Think I\'d better check mine again... It\'s been a while since I\'ve even had my car anywhere near me!

Thanks guys...I\'ve fitted mine but it doesn\'t seem to have made any difference.

All the ones I\'ve seen for the FD just use the nylon bush friction type dampers. They are very stiff, you\'d be lucky or superhuman to move one by hand, but the sort of torque reaction the engine puts through them is altogether a greater force than you\'d manage by hand. If you really care, I guess a proper oil and shim damper like a bike-style steering damper could be used instead http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=MCYCLE&pcode=PPASD-50B
(likev these). Basically the same as a tiny suspension unit, the more torque you put into them, the harder they resist. Not a cheap upgrade, though! Plus, I\'m not sure that the volcanic heat under the bonnet of an FD would be very good for the damping consistency of the oil

Or use a mountain bike damper

Not a bad idea, that! Would it be man enough to cope with the forces, or would it just flubber about helplessly, though?

My problem was that because the damper had no give I couldn\'t fit it as it was out by about 0.5cm and I couldn\'t move it or the engine enough to get a fit.

You should be able to get a bit of length adjustment using the locknut and adjuster on one end of the damper body, 5 mil shouldn\'t be impossible to get, hopefully!

Unfortunately it was, everything would as tight as possible and still wouldn\'t fit. It\'s done now tho, not making any difference from what I can tell tho.

You should be able to lengthen it slightly at the cylinder end, I think the eyelet screws in and out and there is a locking nut?  I made sure mine was the correct width before fitting it.

Try it!

All, I have been told by two big tuners that these often do very little and can rip the bulkhead away.

I used a motorcycle steering damper mounted off the double skinned bulkhead near the upper RHS front wishbone across to the air pump lower mount bracket (no air pump on mine). I found this very noticably effective, greatly improving my launch control and my 60ft time dropped from by 0.2. I later found a perforated LHS engine mount, so my vehicle wasn\'t in a perfect state to begin with. Mounting towards the from of the engine will better counter yaw in the engine as it torques about the brace between the gearbox and differential. No noticeable vibration, just smoothed torque impulses as the wheels broke traction allowing better modulation of the throttle. (it was a Triumph Daytona steering damper, £10 from a breaker)

Regards, Jonathan

It was too long rather than too short which is why I had serious messing to do to get it to fit.

Engine mounts are poly (not your standard ones as there is no metal connecting each side of the mount in the normal way) and recently replaced. Will have to look into these motorcycle dampers :)
