Title: Car over heating COOLANT PROBLEMS
Post by: Eddie on March 16, 2004, 02:55:00 PM
Hello
I am relatively new to the group, I recently acquired my FD3S it a type X 92 twin turbo, very impressed with the car as a whole but I have had a few problems, first was a petrol leak, which Pip at WGT sorted, then it had a major service and I was out and about driving the car.
Did 150 miles in it, came of the motor way to work and I noticed a heat problem, temp needle rising fast, then the dreaded add coolant buzz :(.

I pulled over and did the obvious, I noticed that the pipe which is attached to the overflow tank had come off and it had thrown coolant all over engine bay, I cliped the hose back on and filled it up with water. everything seemed fine, until I took it for a test drive and let the boost rip, as soon as the boost came in the heat started to rise again, all the way up to the dreaded buzzer noise again, I checked the water and added more.
The car is now pushing coolant out of the radiator resiviour bottle on the left of the engine bay, Pip has sent me a cap to see if it is a faulty pressure cap (I have not fitted yet as the cap is at home).

I am worried the car has a air lock in it.
Any advise welcome, the car is booked back in at WGT but not till Thursday.

Anyone else experienced this problem.

Cheers

Don\'t drive it har until thursday if you have to drive it at all.  Drivig with dodgy cooling system is a fast way to rebuild city.

Thanks for the advise, I will not be driving it, a rebuild is a scary and costly thought.

Hi Eddie please have a look at this as it just may help.

[ hope so]

If it\'s dumped a fair bit of water and you toped it up fully the system may take a little time to resettle.

Hope this helps

Hmmm, Could be a dodgy pressure cap but... Throwing water out of the overflow bottle could mean one of your water seals may have failed, resulting in rebuild time.

Try the cap first, then disconnect the pipe to the overflow (stay stationary) and see if you get leakage from the pipe connected to the AST tank, if you don\'t see water leakage when the water reaches normal operating temp from that pipe, your problem may have been a dodgy cap.

If you still see water leakage it could be a water seal. Then you could try to look for water leakage signs (bubbles in water etc...) however, youv\'e booked your car in with WGT, so your in safe hands.

Good luck...Please report back with your findings

Thanks for the info, fingers crossed, I have the cap now from WGT so I will give it a try today.
I will report back with any info.

Hello,

i had similar prob on sunday, as it turned out there was a air pocket in the aluminium radiater, if you are worried about a air pocket simply fill coolant to the top leave top off and turn on the car, if you get lots of bubbles popping up thats your prob.
If you have a radiator on yours theres a pressure realease nut at top of the unit open this while car is on if it spills bubbles too theres a air pocket in there, should have coolant in it visible to you. While you do that check all hoses too and clips too to make sure theres no splits anywhere.

SI,

yea couldn\'t find a leak anywhere?? i think the air pocket wouldn\'t let the water flow through resulting in overheating which evaporated the coolant, as one side of the radiator was boiling and the other side was cold?? now its running fine both side wearming/cooling the same.

Had to fill it with water though for testing gonna take the front spoiler off tomorrow and empty the radiator and refill with the proper coolant and gonna recheck all the hosing while i\'m there.

So should be cool for the dyno run on Sat, hopefully.

Hi again

Just got my car back from WGT (I must say first of all thanks to Pip for fitting me into his tight schedule I really appreciated it)
and heres my bit on WGT, very nice service, they did not mind me hassling them all hours of the day and great advise given by Pip when ever I called to ask him what could be wrong.
I will not take my car to anyone else, luckly I am only 7 miles away from WGT:)
Top service.

On to my over heating problem.
Looks like it was the thormostat, Pip replaced and then filled it up with coolant and got rid of any air, I need to keep it checked over the next few days and top if if needed, Pip then took it for a long test drive and he said the car did not miss a beat (which coming from an expert like Pip really assures me my car is alright.

I did how ever find an oil leak which seemed be at the back of the engine, I asked Pip to take a look at this also and he advised it will need doing but not urgent, just need to keep an eye on it anyway.

Pip did advise however that I should get my oil changed when I have done about 1000 miles, I do not know how long the car was sat in the garage in Japan before I bought it so that is what I will do, when I take it back for the 1000 oil change he will do the oil leak, should be about 3 hours (clutch out and gear box to get to it.

Thanks for all your advise guys/girls.
