I think you\'ve got to be abit more specific in terms of what mileage, condition, etc etc.

FOB prices in Japan at the moment range from 1,600,000 yen to 2,700,000 yen for 99 year RX-7, so quite a difference.

Landed prices you\'ll be looking at anywhere from £11K to £20K.  Then conversion, registering and tax will set you back about £300.  You can no longer register an FD RX7 as 1300.  Must be 2616cc.

At the moment the tax is £185 per annum.  Not terrible, but unfortunately thats our government for you.

I worked in Japan for a number of years and made very good friends/contacts.  The RX7\'s im talking about are from grade 4 onwards from dealer forecourts in Japan.  Not mass internet imports from high volume exporters such as tau/trade car/win-tech/japan-partner etc etc.

Majority have one/two owners from new, full service history\'s etc, and are very maticulously checked over by my contacts, test driven and inspected.

I\'ve been an importer for over a decade now, and have learnt valuable lessons on the way.  Hence why the quality/prices are slightly higher than what you\'ve quoted.

Your correct mate, there is no model report available for the FD.  Unless you paid for one to be made, then your talking major money and the report would only really be useful for that one car as if you brought another over and tried to use the same one, it would have to match the original FD report even down to the make of tyres.

Hence why there is no model report for the FD.

i contacted one of the model report companies for some info and another reason they said was they couldnt get the emissions down to the required levels??  dunno how true that would be.

a friend mentioned that the gov is planning an overhaul of the whole sva procedure, importing, etc.  making it far harder to bring cars in.  dont know how much trutch is in that, im sure if its all talk then you might know??

sorry for the slight hijack by the way lol.....

It\'s all about destroying free enterpise mate.  Car manufacturers have complained about grey imports for many years, and the government has tightened it\'s claws.

I wouldnt be supprised if in 10 years it was impossible to register any grey import.

It\'s entirely up to you mate.  If it were me and I wanted one fairly soon then i\'d go for it.  If you have your doubts and in the back of your mind would not be happy unless you got an rs then wait a while.

If you do decide to go for the RB have a quick compression test done, just for piece of mind, i know the mileage is low, but even i\'ve had an engine go at 35K.  Only other problem at that age of engine maybe water seals, but unfortunately there is no real way of testing the condition.

Kevin, next time you are at one of the mrc meets come have a look at the 1996 rz I\'ve imported. HKS hipermax pro suspension, 60k on the speedo, re-a clutch and loads of other stuff for little bit over 4k in UK and it was grade 4 at the auction.

Dont misslead people about rx7 prices because 99 rx7 can be bought for 8k with grade 3.5 or even 4.  For 2.5million yen you could get myself spirit R rx7 with millege almost to none.

I am not being rude mate and not trying to ruin your business so dont take it wrong.

ive yet to see a spirit R (especially \'A\') for that kinda money mate.  they seem to average around 3 - 3.5m yen, if they are going for near 2.5 i wonder why the price has dropped so much?  but i cant see the spirit Rs dropping value much really.  im sure 2002MY could be got for that kinda money but the last run of motors, of any top car are bound to hold decent value?

I know I have seen your RZ for sale, it\'s an average grade import.

Dont miss lead people over grades either.  What one internet exporter company classes as a grade 4 to 5 another wouldnt even class as a grade 3.  There are so many variations in Japan that grading is a very loose term.

Your not ruining my business at all, i have been doing imports for over a decade in which time i have seen lots of things, granted you are only relatively new to the import scene so you have alot to learn.

With regards to the spirit r for 2.5 mill yen "with millege almost to none"..... :rollin:rollin:rollin

Yes, you were very lucky.  No matter which office you register it at Preston, Manchester, etc etc it all goes back to Swansea.

I have fought back and forth with them, but it\'s to no avail.  Here\'s what they put in a letter to me from Swansea:

QuoteOriginally Posted by dvla

DVLA has recently sought advice on vehicles powered by rotary engines and how the engine capacity should be recorded for licencing purposes. Based on this advice, the correct engine capacity for your vehicle is, in fact, 2616cc. This is calculated from the sum of the swept volumes of each of the rotors in the engine, multiplied by 2. In this case 2 rotors each of 654cc = 654cc x 2 x 2 = 2616cc. This is defined in the Automotive Exhaust Emissions Directive. It is our view that displacement is intended to mean the same as swept volume. It is not the same as cylinder capacity. If you require further information with regards to this matter, I would suggest that you contact Mazda direct, who should then be able to confirm the information that I have supplied in this letter.

What a pile of crap..... :(

Low grade import? Obviously you know what you are talking about mate.
The diference between you and me is that you probably make the living out of importing cars and I just do it as a hobby so I have no reason to lie to people to sell anything.

Never the less I am glad this thread has been started.  I\'ll be very very happy to post some pictures of so you called low grade cars and their final prices here so people can see.

You just enforced the point I was making.  Anybody can search uss auto auctions.  The point that I was making was that I guarentee the car coming over, not just quick glance at a couple of poor auction house photos.

Hi Maz,
if that price of £8500 was landed, inc vat and import duty, shipping and any dealer/agent fees would put the price of that car at around £5800 give or take?

just wonderin where youre getting the figures from?  is it from sites that give old auction prices, or agents in Japan?  seems really really cheap for that quality, given that well cared for (possibly rebuilt) cars going back to even 93/94 are going for around £5000 or so.

wish the prices were like that when i got mine last july cuz id have just sat it in the drive till now till it just tiopped 10 years lol!!

As I said before on another thread, I got stung for the higher rate of tax last March when I registered my "new" \'93 FD. Even though we\'d transplanted the engine from my previous wrecked one into the new one, it suddenly seemed to cost twice as much to tax as before. They wouldn\'t have it at DVLA Brighton at all. Computer said no! Robbing b*st*rds!

Im sure it applies to cars after 2001, that will be affected by the rates.  Although you may have an import that is UK registered in 2003/4/5/6/7/8 the rate only goes off year of first registration in country of origin and NOT the date of UK registration.

Eg.

Year of manufacture - 1992
Date of first registration - 1992/03
Date of UK registration - 2006/08

It will go off the date of first registration.  No doubt by about 2010 they\'ll of found a way to screw people for earlier registered cars.  But for now I think we should be ok.

how can you tell anything from them auction pictures????
Iv seen a few rx-7\'s when i looked for mine, and you can never judge a car by the pictures and what the owner(auction house) says.

It always amazes me what some people claim as a clean car. and what people think is acceptable. everyones different. there are things on my car that annoy the hell out of me body wise, and for others its nothing.

By reading the sheet that the car comes with!!! The details on the cars is very correct and detailed. The price you pay for them is probably 100% less then what you pay with export agents but if you decide to go that route its your choise. I am just showing you another way of buying from Japan- MUCH CHEAPER WAY!!!

1999 Mazda rx7 type RS with loads and loads of bits on it.
80k km

Price in Japan 3,465.93 GBP  this isnt the usual price for such good quality car but they do come now and then.

Regards,

You forgot to add the £3500+ price tag of the rebuild which it\'s coming up for.
