Very tempted to buy an RX-8 now theres a couple advertised on ebay abnd autotrader for less than £7k.
I suppose the fuel consumption and looming (2010?) £400 road tax is bringing the prices down.
First of all - why so cheap? There seems to be 03/04 cars advertised under £7k and cars for £10k that look the same to me? The same number of miles etc so why the large difference in price? Is there something major wrong with the early cars? Is there some major expensive service looming over some cars?
My thoughts were that they may be import cars, but it seems there aren\'t many imports around at all. I notice Jap spec cars may not have the same brakes and wheels as UK cars - and theres a 5 speed \'poverty\' spec car rather than UK spec 6 speed only.
If I only have £6.5 to spend on purchase, am I better off getting a good import - who imports RX-8\'s - there hardly seem to be any!
Any help very welcome (currently drive a Corrado VR6).
Thanks.

Hi
We have an RX-8 Import 6 speed and 231, there are some differences, our rear and side windows are blackout - which we like. The seat material is cloth (velour) in the import cars, the UK spec has leather. I know there is more to tell but Clive and others can update you.
Very confused about the pricing. Why would anyone choose this (small wheels & brakes low power usual import issues with radio, fogs etc) for £9k http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/470723.htm
When a much higher spec UK car can be had for £6700???? http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/567233.htm
Also is this really worth £2k more than the black £6700 car? http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/515526.htm
£2k for 20k miles less????!!!
Prices seem to be all over the place. I realise that for £7k RX8s are a fantastic bargain!!

Hi Lisa - thanks for your reply! so do all UK cars leather? (i\'m one of the few that doesn\'t really like it)
UK cars have optional leather. I have a UK car from a main dealership in the velour. I agree, it\'s actually much nicer, far less sweaty :)
p.s. those Pistonheads ads show that the UK one is nearly 90k miles, the import 35k, for 7k vs 9k quid. I have a 2003 with 23k miles, which I was thinking of shipping on for about 9k. It\'s all down to mileage, equipment spec, etc.
I haven\'t heard much about Renesis engines and their requirements for rebuilds, but on older 13b\'s, you would be incredibly lucky (in fact unique ??) to have reached 90k without the need for a rebuild.
Remember the rx8 is NA, and with the older NA engines over 100k miles isnt unheard of. That said a compression test would be advisable just to be sure.

So has anyone heard of a magic mileage where the renesis need a rebuild? surely theres quite a few over 100k now?
my mate just sold an rx8 yesterday....231, sat nav, leather, 53 plate, 65k , in grey with sunroof for £7K
N/A 13B\'s can reach over 150k....
i heard 200 :P
Tax isnt going to be £400 for all. They have changed it if the car is over 2006 plate then it will be £400. For 2005 and older it it will be approx £270 ( as per Maz )

How comes I paid £220 in April for 6 months tax on our 2004 RX-8!

That import is an automatic - they have the smaller wheels are weren\'t available in the UK.
The UK spec 231 are 6 speed and the 192s are 5 speed - mine certainly is no \'poverty\' spec! :2eek

There\'s a thread about this somewhere but basically the older RX-8\'s are now well over 200k and there\'s no evidence of any needing a rebuild. The very few problems have been due to poor maintance eg not topping the oil up.

That\'s the current rate Lisa - it went up on 1st April so I got mine a bit cheaper in March.
Hi all, thanks for the replies! I\'ve not bought one yet but I have looked at a couple of tired RX8s. I\'m thinking I will go for the 192, it did seem to have the edge around town, however I may miss the 6 speed. I\'ll probably end up just buying on mileage and condition really.

Apologies - I was reffering to the small wheeled jap spec car as "poverty spec" i.e. slang for bottom of the range and low trim level, I realised ALL UK cars come with bigger wheels and better trim!

Thats what I wanted to hear!

According to parkers today for both 192 and 231 cars for a FULL YEAR (seems something went wrong Lisa?):
date of reg 1/8/03 - 23/03/06 tax is £210 now and will be £300 from april 09
date of reg 23/03/06 on tax is £400 and £440
Currently pay £185 and then will pay £200 in april 09 on my old VR6.
Just waiting for the right RX8 relatively locally :)

Sounds about right - so my tax will be more than my insurance! :2eek
Thought I was in for a bit of a refund on my car tax or at least to get the DVLA to tax my car until March 09 - checked the car tax again and seems liked we were charged the wrong tax band, on checking my log book it seems that as the car is an import was was regsitered in the UK in April 07, we have to pay the new emissions charges ie £440 per year - Ouch!!
