Title: Picked my FD up on Saturday
Post by: Lil-Steve on June 18, 2008, 08:23:27 AM
All I can say is wow!

I have driven a lot of good cars and had a couple myself but I can\'t believe how good the FD is. It\'s far better than I had expected, the brakes, the feel and power.

You can approach corners at a ridiculous speed and still have a lot to spare on the brakes, and the powersteering is weighted perfectly, the pedals are the right weight and it all feels incredibly well put together. I had no idea it was going to be this good.

I was under the impression they were supposed to be a bit twitchy and wayward, it is maneuverable and darty but not unstable. Yes, both ends of the car have broken loose on me but in such a communicative way. I am genuinely impressed I have never gelled with car like that ever; 5 minutes it took me to feel comfortable and within the day I was pushing about 90% of my ability. The car is much better than me still.

The only way I can describe it is S2000 chassis and controls, FC on the limit handling, GTR straight line power and all wraped in an oil painting of a body.

I just can\'t believe it. It\'s nearly bought tears to my eys a couple of times it\'s that good.

Spent my first £74 on petrol yesterday, but I\'ll tell you what it was worth every single penny (http://www.fduk.org/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Also I\'d like to say a massive thank you to Miguel & Gareth at Newera for their fine work in sourceing and preparing this car. :Thumbsup!

Welcome.

The FD tends to do that people. You only really appreciate its amazingness when you get it round a track. Such a beautifully balanced chassis and it talks to you all the time. I love the way that when you stick the back end out it just sits there and waits for you to give it some more! So easy to control in a drift and such great fun watching porsche drivers cry as you fly past them round a corner! :WaveBye

Just be careful in the wet if youve got Jap compound tyres on. They are made slightly harder for the differnt tarmac on Jap roads so are useless in the wet. Make sure you get a good set of Brit tyres on there.

Have fun.

Never a truer word spoken. I crashed mine (Minor crash) 3 months after getting it due to it\'s rubbish tyres. I was only doing about 20 round a slightly damp corner, too!

Pictures as requested, not great yet as I\'ve not mastered the camera just yet and I\'ve had to srink them to about 25% of the original!

looks sweet...

But be careful in the early months of ownership... its easy to get complacent about how well you think you know the car... then it bites...

I appreciate your concern guys, don\'t worry though I\'m a RWD turbo veteran :bandit (veteran hat). I used to have a Supra (MA70) with quite a few bits done for a few years and have driven or owned GTR\'s S2000, RX8, FC etc. From the feel of it so far this is not a car you could ever become complacent in full stop.

I\'ve made most of my mistakes already but will still be learning for the next few months. I can make it dance quite a bit already just getting used to the sequential system while exiting corners and the amount of temperature the tyres and brakes need to perform. Fairly certain the brake pads are not stock, or they are and they\'re really good.

But thanks guys I look forward to spending some time on here and getting to know you all.

Welcome and all that! Looks like a lovely clean car you have there, dude, no wonder you\'re so chuffed. Hope for your sake the pads are standard, or you\'ll be crying over your mullered fingertips cleaning brake dust off those lovely white Enkeis every other day :)!

if she is a fresh import watch out for the tyres... especialy in the wet as the jap tyres don\'t realy like the UK roads & it could all end up in tears!!

Nice car though, hope you keep on enjoying it like you are for years to come... I know I am ;)

welcome, and as said before . be careful with the back end. rex`s have a great control feeling upto 95%  then it goes. usually 180. or in my case 360 then 180 then central reservation :-(

Unfortunatly she\'s poorly at the moment only had her on the road a fortnight before a tip ejected itself and embedded itself in the CAT. Really gutted :(

She\'s down at Hayward awaiting a rebuild but there is a big queue and I\'m expecting about 5-6 weeks turn around. She\'s geting a street port and non-seq at the same time and possibly a clutch.

Suffice it to say its been an expensive start to FD ownership. :eek

Gutted for you mate, only 2 weeks??

Did you get your car from a trader?  Is it going to be paid under warranty?

I would advise going against non seq if you are running a stock ECU as well , keep it seq why chop off the low part of the power band, it still miffs me why people do it if you have a working seq system in the first place.

I\'m down London for work at the moment so won\'t be back up home until the car is done. I usually spend the week in London and weekend at home in Pinxton and the car lives there.

I have PFC so no need to worry about the ecu front, I like the sequential system don\'t get me wrong but if I don\'t like it I can get it changed back for free anyway. The street port should get the non-seq to boost earlier than 4000 rpm anyway.

I was persuaded by some friends to get the engine done by Carl as you get a waranty and the reassurance that the best hands have been placed on your engines sensitive parts :D

i am yet to understand the whole non sequen set up. whats the point?
dont get me wrong , these cars are pigs if the system is not working right.

but the sequn set up makes these cars special, unless your going bigg horses anyways.

Well I was under the impression that when driving gently I will be using less fuel as the primary turbo will be off until the revs are high. When I exit corners I\'ll be less likely to make a mistake by hitting the transition point.

The street port should reduce the point at which parallel turbos spool anyway, and in the wet when driving slowly and pulling out of junctions slowly the car won\'t be trying to light the rears up all the time.

When I\'m driving fast the revs will barely ever drop below 4000 anyway.

These are the reasons for me considering it, has anyone had both setups and found non-seq better?
