Title: Egi?
Post by: B.Martin on June 17, 2008, 03:55:27 PM
Firstly what does it stand for? i think this stands for the non turbo version. Either way as my main aim in the RX world is to get a nice drift car, and the finding and purchase of a turbo version is prooving difficult as one fell through earlier on this week i am back to square one. There is a chap not far from me who has a non turbo for sale. What kind of BHP can i expect to push out of tuning one of these and what would i get as standard? Also if i was to ding it, wouldn\'t be as gutted as i would if it were a turbo II.

Any help much appreciated, Ben

There were 2 versions of the egi 140bhp & 160bhp but am unsure of what one we got over here in the uk but my egi seemed alot faster than 140bhp. To my knowlege not a great deal to be gained bhp power wise on the egi apart from porting, cheaper mods are decent air feed, induction & a free flowing exhaust also a good service & loose excess weight out of the car (the egi was the heaviest rx7 made i believe). I am new to rx7\'s myself so sure some of the other more experience owners will help & guide you.

so its hard work but rewarding. Ben in your opinion would you get a turbo to learn in then or an EGI ?

the general idea over at driftworks is to start in an underpowered car. This way you become a good drifter without having to rely on the power of the car, so when you upgrade you can become even better. PLus your likely to mess up the drift car a bit so a cheap egi would be ideal.

The main complaint about the 7\'s is the lack of steering angle, saying that ive seen plenty of people drift them extremely well.

also the UK non turbos are 146bhp

The Turbo II is easier to modify as in there are a lot more aftermarket parts available. You can also get more BHP quickly with the TII mods. The EGI\'s were 146 bhp as standard I believe and the TII S5 were 200bhp. (S5 models are the 1989 onwards cars). I believe the stearing lock is an issue (for drifting) with the FC as in it doesn\'t have as greater lock as other more well known drift cars.
If it were my choice i\'d go for the TII S5. Hope this helps a little.

Realistically, you won\'t use the full lock for ages........having more just helps if you **** up, as does more power.
I\'d say go for an EGi to start with. They\'re cheap enough to be almost disposable (sorry guys but it\'s true) and most drift mods can be taken off and transferred if you get a Turbo II later on.

Here you go :)

Just to clarify:

In the UK the Egi had 146bhp, the Turbo II (available from 89 onwards) had 200bhp.

EGI stands for Electronic Gasoline Injection.

Later versions of the EGI in the USA had 160bhp.  In the UK the Egi\'s performance remained unchanged throughout its life, the post 88 cars had power steering as standard and a wrap around rear spoiler.

Hope that helps :wave

Did the UK EGI have recaro seats?

Mine has these, I think the rear seats match as well.

so have you decided on an egi or TII or are you looking for either?

i think egi as i\'m having a few problems with insurance quotes now. Need to call call connections though as last time they got me a decend quote on the TII. Soon as i\'ve done that i\'ll know for definate. No point getting a TII if i cant get insured.

Welded diff makes things interesting. You\'ll get a lot of juddering from the rear at low speeds (sub 10mph), when turning and parking for example.
For some reason it makes it more awkward to drive in traffic - I\'m guessing the lack of low down torque as I\'ve driven my mates s13 with a welded diff and it didn\'t have the same problem.
It\'ll make it a bit more understeery in the wet but I\'ve got really pants tires on the front which don\'t help.

However, it makes things so much easier when drifting. You\'re able to maintain the slide without it suddenly snapping back like it does with an open diff.

If you can get yourself to the next day at Lydd (16th July I think) then I\'m more than happy to take you out for a passenger ride :)
