Title: who runs a dragon gear box brace
Post by: davehg on June 16, 2008, 11:33:57 PM
i fitted a dragon gear box brace this evening, what a nughtmare, i struggled to line up the two gear box bolts with the brace. any way its finally fitted.

i just wanted to know what people think of it, i noticed on a quick drive that the vobrations through the car are higher than before, also the gear box wines and when on idle you can now hear a rattle from the box yet when you engage the clutch it goes away (never had this before)

It will not kill your box. It will transfere more vibration through the car. I actually like it feels more connection between driver and car, but some people cant/wont put up with it.
It is designed to prevent 3rd to 5th misshifts and stop unnecessary movement in the drive train which leads to breakages.

hey ross,

the only thing that worries me is the wining from the box now and the rattle i now get when idling from the box.

You\'ve always had the whining, its just now that you hear it.

so if its now that i hear it and its always been there it would suggest that its being put under heavier loads now when sat still and driven? ill be honest ive never heard it wine before at all!

I\'ve got both a diff brace and gearbox brace from Dragon/Ross and I\'m well impressed with both.  A good improvement on gear change and general feel from the car.

I can\'t believe you can even hear whine... there\'s far more noise from my exhaust than there is from the trans.

its definately there....

i made my own diff brace a while ago, no bending this thing i used a ten tonne press to shape it :burnout

The whine will have probably always been there but had no where to transmit it to, now the whine is felt and heard as it vibrates through the brace as its metal to metal as a shock absorber.
Have you changed oil lately? if you have a whinny box it could be in need of a change or just tired

its had oil changed within the last 1000 miles, i also mounted my brace on rubber pads, its not the vbration through the car that bothers me, i just dont want to have to change my box if it gives up because of the brace!

Got both gearbox and diff brace on mine and they\'ve tightened the car up a great deal which i\'m totally impressed with.

I asked Ross about the added noise and vibration and he assured me that no extra stress on the box. The brace has just taken the slack out of the box from what i understand.

If all your going to do is blast around the roads your box will last for ages surely, but if you intend on drag or circuit racing then you will wear the box out alot faster.

hi pete,

i intend on dragging it as well, i have a spare box but dont want to have to keep replacing them if the brace will cause a problem. in my mind if something makes a noise that its not supposed to then something isnt 100% right.

PS im not ranting on about any particular make of brace just the noises i get from the box after fitting it.

Good point! Well if your not happy with it then take it off. Unless Ross can ease your worries?!?!?
