Hey all, and thanks in advance to anyone who kindly takes time to read this and put my mind at rest :Thumbsup!
I recently bought my 2nd Rex, 1995 with 60k KM on the clock. It starts fine whether hot or cold and is so much more reliable than my last rex. However there are few things bugging me, and i don\'t think it\'s running quite right. I have booked it in at WTG for the beginning of next month for a check over, but i would like to know if you think i can still run the car up until then, or whether to just wait until I take a trip to get it checked?
I have trawled through the search and many other sites, but have found no specific threads to my issues, so forgive me if anything has been covered already. Here\'s my problems:
1: when starting from cold, the car has a loud "humming" or "whirring" sound, which clears when it has warmed up and had a good run. It is more apparent at low revs. The noise also increases/decreases with revs
2: There is a continuous rattling/ticking sound, which increases/decreases with revs. I checked the powersteering fluid which was full, and searched for anything loose, but have found nothing (I hear the rattling more when the window is wound down)
3: Puff of Black smoke sometimes appears from the exhaust when i start reversing.
4. Just doesnt feel as powerful as my last rex (even though my last one had serious starting issues amongst many other problems)
Could these be just minor problems? or would it be best not to run the car until it\'s time to take a trip to cheshire:3Confused
Thanks guys.
Kris.
1. sounds like the air pump bud, nothing to worry about IMHO, mine does this all the time.
But looking at you other issues i\'ve always been of the opinion that if it does not feel right don\'t boot it. I\'d keep the journeys to a minimal untill it gets into Pips safe hands.
3. Is probably over fuelling of some sort
4. Could be anything. Is it boosting ok? Might be turbo problems, without given all the spec etc of both cars it like saying how long is a piece of string
Yeah sorry, just realised i missed out all the vital info:2Rolleyes
AFAIK its completely standard apart from a b.o.v. It doesn\'t have any gauges apart from the standard ones in the dash, so no boost gauge (i\'m getting one a.s.a.p)
My last rex was overefuelled and backfired and banged like mad, however, this one pops only now and again, but thats normal right?
Edit: Will the air pump need changing at all then? or just a common issue that doesn\'t affect the car?
Either way thanks guys, there\'s a jap show at santa pod this weekend and i was hoping to attend (with the rex) so i suppose if i take it easy there should be no problem?
Random pops and bangs are fairly common on FDs - mine does it all the time, \'specially when decellerating from WOT.
i wouldnt worry imo, this sounds pretty normal. I thought the whirring was a clutch release bearing going, but its the air-pump being its normal self.
word of advice with rx7\'s, its easy to jump ship to drastic conclusions when something is different. I used to think my rota\'s were dying, turbo\'s exploding and cat\'s dying for the first few weeks i got mine.. turns out all my probs were down to a ****y £10 one-way pressure valve. :)

Yeah mine does this, no idea what it is, but i\'ve done 5000 miles with it doing it lol... Does it disappear when you put your foot on the clutch? Mine does so i think it may be the release bearing or pilot bearing or something to do with the clutch....

I also have this, and posted it up on here a few weeks/months ago but to no joy.... Listening closely tho i\'ve come to the conclusion its the pulsation damper and the injectors so perfectly normal....
3: Puff of Black smoke sometimes appears from the exhaust when i start reversing.
Could be just carbon build up in the exhaust coming loose??, does it do it just in reverse??

As other posts, could be any number of things... Was you\'re last rex standard like this one? Until you get the boost gauge you wont know whats going on so could be a leak or anything.....
And as other posts, dont worry about random pops and bangs, mine does this too especially when crawling in traffic, cos mine is overfueling at the min anyway, or as trotter says from WOT
The pops and bangs issue does seem to relate to the air pump, i get loads of pops and bangs if i connect the air pump, but when it\'s disconnected i hardly get any. So if the air pump is knackered it would stand to reason that this is why your not getting much bang for for buck (so to speak)

Yeah, i think i may be being a little bit paranoid. I was so gutted after i bought my first rex! i stopped for petrol on the way home with it, and it took me an hour to get it going again! i posted on here about the issues and had it checked..and it basically wasn\'t worth the money i paid and was close to needing a rebuild. Either way, it will be going to safe hands at the end of the month, so any issues will hopefully be sorted. Just wanted to make sure it was ok to drive still, and all the helpfull comments here have put my mind at rest. So thanks everyone, really appreciate it :Thumbs-up
P.S Once it has had a checkover, i will report back if anything was wrong. Hopefully it will help anyone else experiencing similar problems.
Thanks again all, hopefully meet some of you sunday at pod :D
