Title: Changing Brake Pads FD3
Post by: leeroy_25 on June 15, 2008, 11:58:40 AM
I went to change the front pads on my fd3 yesterday.. when I got them out of the box I noticed that there are two different types of pads. One has some kind of spring on the leading edge. I figure that there should be one of each type per side. however when I took the existing pads out, both pads with springs were on one side?! Is this a mistake by the person who previously fitted the pads? also can someone comfirm which side the pad with the spring goes? From looking at the caliper arrangement I have guessed on the inside for now. If someone could post a diagram or picture it would be very helpful. Is there a similar setup at the rear? I have not had to do these yet.

Thank you
Lee

Spring? There should be 2 pins holding them in, then 2 M shaped spring pushing them apart as needed...

I can\'t remember seeing any spring on the front pads, but then it was a while ago I changed them.

It\'s not a spring in that sense.. It\'s a spring steel piece riveted on? I will try and put a pictue up later.
The other thing I meant to ask is the pads have spacers that go in with them. Flat steel shims. One shim is angled and has an arrow on it. how do these go in as again they were different side to side. Should the arrow point up or down?

Thank you

Ivf its what I think you are on avbout its a small plate with a piece attached like a spring, the idea is as the pad wears down when it gets low it touchs the disc causing a squeal telling you to change the pads, lots when changed dont always get put back

Ah, I know what you mean now... I never bother with them, or the anti-squeal shims (which are the metal backing bits), if you want to use them then they should only fit on one way otherwise just use some copperslip grease on the back of the pad which will get the same effect.
