Title: Upgrading stereo / speakers
Post by: Sach on March 15, 2004, 11:52:48 AM
Hi all

I\'ve just picked up my RX7 RZ last Friday (bought from Tomson), so a big HELLO to everyone out there - I hope to meet some of you in the near future :)

Anyway, the stereo is one of those double din Japanese Pioneer TV / Sat Nav thingymujiggies, which is totally useless and pretty ugly, so I\'m in the market for a new one.  I\'d ideally like a single din unit, so firstly, how do I go about getting the old one out?  and secondly, what have people put in the spare gap (are there any blaking plates / trays etc?)

Are there any guides online for doing this?

What are the speaker sizes for the front and rear as I\'d like to change these too?  Is it an easy job?  Any online guides?

Any suggestions on speaker types (which fit easily!) and single din MP3 players would be appreciated.

Thanks
Sachin

the rears take 6x8 speakers, they will fit straight in! ive done that but they sound shite! whoop a pair of 6x9s in the parcel shelf!

hi,

i also tried 6x8\'s in the rear and it sounded pretty bad. think there are only a couple of types available. instead i made up some panels, vinyled em up and cut 16cm in the panels in the back. also whipped some 6x9\'s in the parcel shelf. ;)

cheers

Hi all,

I think 6*9 are very 16-18 skool boy racer!!!.  As it is my car that Sachin bought I also know that he does not have a parcel shelf.

Personally my belief is that speakers are all about what make you buy (in terms of quality) and how you mount them.  Also Dynamatt makes loads of difference.  Always scrap the original mounts and get some MDF behind the speakers and try and strengthen up the pods.

I was going to put Focal Polyglass 165V Slims in the front, (front speaker size is 6.5 so huge amount of choice, although be carefull of mounting deoth) these would fit straight in although you would need to mount the tweeter.  I suggest the footwell for an excellent soundstage.  You would also need to hide the crossover somewhere.

These are wonderfull speakers and have been designed for stealth installs..

For the rear I was going to use JL Audio XR series (top of the range) 5*7 components. They also fit 6* 8 applications.  I have had many many JL audio speakers and none of them have ever disapointed !!  Again you would have to mount the tweeter, I was gointgto put it beside them.  Also hide the crossover.

I would be very very surprised if you would be disapointed by this set up, it will look stealth and have no need to cut huge holes in your (rare) parcel shelf - if you had one !!!
Oh did I mention I have both the above for sale :rollin

New and unused......

Also I have had all of my stereo\'s fitted with by the car Hi-fi centre and have learnt most of this from them.  I used to install myself but I am so amazed with the sound they get !!!  They have info on how they do their dynamatt here......

Under dynamatt installation tip.

I suppose though with the RZ it is finding the right balance of getting the right amount of stereo in there without adding to much weight as it is supposed to be a light weight racer.

Anyhow, I\'ll get my coat.

Hi Tomson, all......related question.  Just found that the oe Bose head unit in my Type-X is beyond repair, but so far as DS were able to tell, the speakers are all ok.  Anyone know of any mags/sites where I can get reviews of what are best buys/recommended units at different price levels - ie best buys for  Â£xx, £yy, £zz etc?

Grateful for advice - thanks, Neil

http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/index.php

Go to that forum there is a lot of info available on car audio and the people are decent, not all boy racer types, they understand the difference between sound quality and pure base!
