Several things to check - Condition of:
Rad Cap
Rad
Thermostat.

A rad cap not sealing could cause these symptoms, as could a gunked rad. Had the car overheated noticably? (Not that the stock gauge tells you much!)

It looked and sounded like it had overheated a lot due to all the hissing from the ASR tank and the brown rusty looking water that was coming out of the expansion tank,i have a new thermostat ready to go in but i could do with a work shop manual to read so i fully understand whats going on and what to do.

There are several things it could be to be honest - the worst case scenario is water seals :(
Search for the \'champagne test\' for infor on checking water seals.
What\'s the engine\'s history? age/mileage/rebuilds?

1995 59000miles no rebuilds, i drive it like its stolen most of the time.
The champagne test whats that, sound like compression leak into the water jacket.
This is going to get expensive isn\'t it.
