Yep, the Lady "impressively" failed the MOT yesterday....
Most things were simple enough - a few electrical problems with the lights and so on. However on emissions.....
Wee quick summary:
Fast Idle Test:
CO Allowed = 0.3%vol CO Actual = 7.74%vol
HC Allowed = 200ppm HC Actual = 850ppm
Lambda Allowed 0.97 - 1.6 Lambda Actual = 0.8
Natural Idle Test:
CO Allowed = 0.5%vol CO Actual = 8.52%vol
Now methinks the MOT man put me through the wrong test, \'cos I thought a \'93 Import only had to do the 3.5% CO test?? (which I still would\'ve failed)
Anyhoo, theres no cat and/or lambda sensor so I need to get a hold of them...Any ideas???
PS: When talking about a pre \'95 import, I assume it means that the car was manufactured pre-95 not imported before then?? Sorry for thick question!!
you MUST have a lambda sensor - or surely your car would run mega rich all the time ???
thats what i said, but apparently its not there???
If you\'ve got a standalone ECU you can just run open loop all the time - so no Lambda required - but those emissions seem awfully high !

Prof T has apexi ecu
Reckon that\'s deffo the wrong test they\'ve given you, if yours is a \'93 import it should be the pre-cat test, 3.5%CO and 1200ppm HC. Is the Lambda sensor not on the downpipe?
Hi there
I failed mine yesterday also, mine is a 92 import and I got the 3.5% vol CO test.
My results:
CO %vol - 6.798 FAIL LIMIT - 3.500
HC ppm vol - 2880 FAIL LIMIT - 1200
Do my results from the Hydrocarbon test indicate anything? :xconfused
Also failed on lights and upper coil spring mounting is damaged and weakened.
Back to the drawing board!
lol, nice work mate. Fancy going out to celebrate single-handedly killing the world?? :driving :Hammer
Ummmm, if you have imports, then they are not part covered in the MOT Emissions test (version 8 or summat) that they use to check. A UK car has a different VIN number, and that is what dictates the figures to use. Certainly 5 years ago, they didn\'t list it in the book, and as such it\'s the higher figures quoted above - if you\'re friendly with them, I\'d get them to show you the entry in the book that they used, and show them the error of their ways...
Otherwise, new plugs and leads, take it for a right good spanking before, and get them to do the emissions on the hot engine - suddenly everything is right...
I got my emissions sorted a different way... £50, back pocket....get it?
told T that i should still have a dunk megaphone exhaust buried in garage which i think is catted he could use to get through mot plus could borrow my commander for the day to reduce fueling for the day to pass mot - wont that help ?
There\'s a thread on FD:UK about adjusting Power FC settings, not sure how effective/safe for the engine it is...

T mine failed today same garage as yours, wife took it in for me they used wrong test - did you ring up to complain ? i intend to,passed last 2 years there no problem diferent person tested
Catalyst equiped vehicle with closed loop control
fast idle
co 0.3% vol did 0.35 fail
hc 200ppm did 31ppm pass
lambda 0.97 to 1.6 did 1.26 pass
passed 2nd idle test 0.23/15/1.25
natural idle test
co 0.5% did 1.39% fail
exhaust gas test not successful permission denied
comment:# engine speed measurement was by-passed
also failed the lights "nearside & offside (no beam pattern) headlamp not in good working order adversely affecting beam image
:Grrr:Grrr:Grrr
Mine runs n 850 injectors all round and no cat, always fails the emissions and comes up with the same 7% CO reading. The PFC has been adjusted by a mate to get it through last time.
I\'m not convinced it\'s possible to get it through without tweaking the Power FC or putting the cat back on.
Was thinking about changing back to standard primaries and larger secondaries to see if that makes a difference.
You guys need to find a garage that aint bothered about emissions.
For the most part it\'s down to fuelling on idle - if you can adjust the PFC just for that part of the MAP, it should be fine as there is no load on the engine - you should be able to get quite close to ideal AFR ratio and hence low CO and HC readings.
I have a similar problem which is caused by having a walbro fuel pump, so fuel pressure is higher on idle and the ECU is not mappable and even though it\'s chipped, it\'s not set for the fuel pump pressure. I\'ve been able to lower the emissions by adjusting the BAC valve and air bypass on the MAF - but these are things you don\'t have on the FD.
For you guys - you need to control fuelling on idle - you should be able to leave the rest of the MAP alone, as the MOT man is only interested in the emissions at idle (or should be - for the no cat 3.5%/1200ppm test).
Other tricks are to throw BIO fuel (Ethanol) in the tank for the MOT test, as it burns much cleaner, and then refill the tank after the test with normal juice, and/or fit a cat into the exhaust system for the test and take it out after.
New plugs and a warm engine also help as the bish said.

Gutted mate - got mine booked into to Pip on the 23rd to sort it out - needs a service anyway...
Your headlight problem seems same as mine - any ideas on how we sort it? Or you just getting garage to do it?

T spoke to Damian at mot garage he will sort lights out plus i have my old cat exhaust so will fit for mot, dont want to mess with settings on ecu an area i am loath to touch.
Question is if i decide to keep it on to save messing about will it cause any problems as has a decat on now ?

Prof just talked to Clive he mentioned ethanol - how much in the tank to squeeze through the test ?

I\'ve never tried this myself - but from what I\'ve read on threads on the rx7club, they pretty much empty the tank, put a couple of litres of ethanol in - just enough to run to the test station and back, then drive straight to a garage and top up with \'proper\' gas. I think the idea is that the rotary will be running purely on ethanol which produces lower emissions because it oxidizes more readily to water and co2. I should think that running no or a much more dilute premix would also need to be done just for the test.
car passed mot today with catted dunk megaphone exhaust fitted as opposed to xspower non cat that it failed on.
question - as apexi ecu was mapped with the non cat exhaust on does it need remapping as dunk still on ?
