Title: boost
Post by: porkifer on June 01, 2008, 04:24:35 PM
getting a tad annoyed now with this 16yr old teenager of a car .
i bought the car knowwing it needed the engine rebuilt so i thought anything else is going to be pretty straight forward but oh no the rex curse is alive and living in my car.
il say this quietly coz i know its been done to death on here but im having boost problems .
ive just put viton check valves on which it did need as when i took the old ones off 1 of them you could blow through both ways so i was all excited then thinking haa got you now, ill go and enjoy a quick blast up my personal test track (the A19 past askern) , car drove really nice on the warm up , got up to temps ok then wot in first , fantastic boost up to 0.79 on the apexi controller , quick change up , :reallymad showing .2 on controller and feels like a chavs corsa with all his mates in the back .
when you leave it a while it will boost again but as soon as you change gear nothing .
i reckon the next step is solenoids or a fire and the way im felling it looks like a barbie tonight :flamed.
one of the problems i have is i work away all week and have very little time to sort things and next weekend im soo busy with dog car mot , dentist ,christening to go to (do i have to go ? ah yes my missus may have an opinion on that )
so has anyone giot a box of matches spare

I\'m definitely feeling your pain, dude, this is where I was a couple of months ago! Can\'t diagnose the problem, but I can say that its worth sticking with. At one point, if someone had offered me a used Skoda and 100 quid, I\'d have had their arm off and never looked back to the Rex, but I\'m glad I didn\'t now. I just got so fed up chasing ludicrously erratic faults around that I decided I didn\'t care how much it cost, I was just fed up wasting my time and effort trying (and failing) to fix it. Took it to a specialist, and now she\'s nearly ready and I can\'t wait to drive her again. The way I saw it then was, state she was in, she was worth 1500 pound for parts. Maybe. I may have had to put the best part of two grand into it, but now she\'ll be worth at least six, if I decide to sell her on once the works done.

Yeah, like who was I kidding. Sell her on? All I\'ve done whilst she\'s been in for work is buy loads of shiny bits to treat her with when I finally get her back! Can\'t wait!

For what it\'s worth, my recent experience shows you can change solenoids all day long, and they can even work when you bench test them, but put them in the heat and vibration of the engine bay and they just go all mutant again. That was part of the problem with my random boost issues, and it was no use troubleshooting with the secondhand solenoids I bought when they were just as pony as the originals. Also had issues with a cooked, frayed 15 year old wiring harness and the usual rats nest brittle hose scenario.

I guess the moral is don\'t assume that cos you find one fault, it\'s the only fault. Things often go wrong all at the same time, but if you get that frustrated, get a second opinion, even if it\'s only a mate rather than an expert. Sometimes a different perspective is all it needs to find a way forward, or at least to feel less hopeless about things!

By the sounds of it you have a vac leak, if you don\'t have boost dip the clutch to the revs drop all the way down then floor it if you get boost then you have a vacuum leak

if it is the vacuum lines just check them all to see if they are split, loose or come off

Chris its not a vacuum leak mate, i to told you its the solenoids that are your problem. Checking over the system wont hurt but i can say with 100% certainty its not a vac leak. If you want bring it down and i\'ll have a look through it with you.

I have the same problem and after about 2 months of looking think i know the answer. I have replaced all vaccum lines the engine and turbos are all new so no leaks or faulty parts. I have good reason to believe its the TURBO CONTROL SOLENOID as if you test it by applying 12v it clicks but on closer inspection mine as well as many others do not open fast enough. I have a new replacement to fit in the next day or so. will post results.
