Title: RX7 \'99-02 - Need some advice (First time Rotary)
Post by: Blaze182 on May 30, 2008, 04:09:29 AM
Hey everyone,

I thought I\'d start off by saying this is my first time owning a rotary (well.. I havent brought it yet, I need some advice first).

I was wondering firstly, how economical is it for fuel? (not that much of an issue... but I would like to know)

Now, my main problem is engine rebuilds. I\'ve heard that your supposed to rebuild after every 60k. I love RX7\'s, but I\'m no mechanic...

Can some one outline roughly whats involved in a rebuild, and where to get parts from?

Lastly, I\'m in Melbourne, Australia, so if anyone lives down here... do you know a mechanic that will do it for me?

Quite a few questions, but I dont wanna buy it if all its gonna bring is headaches.... I want the enjoyment too! XD

Wotcha

I\'ve not had my RX long, but i think i can answer a couple of your questions:

Fuel consumption: somewhere in the region of 15-20mpg  - depends on how much you use the boost, how it\'s mapped, etc.

Engine rebuilds: depends on what went wrong with the engine, how it\'s been treated etc.  If you have a search around on here, there are a few threads where people have changed/rebuilt their engines and done a picture walk through.  There is also a very good thread on the SXOC forums: http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=244980

Ah, thanks, those websites are pretty good =D

The RX7 is a lot more economical than I would have thought :) Big plus!

This isn\'t really a \'technical\' question, but its not going to hurt me throwing this in.

I know a lot of people use bodykits, and equally a lot of people dont.

I love the RX7 for its natural looks, but I want it to be individual too....

I\'ve been searching here: http://www.takakaira.co.jp/main.aspx

I didn\'t find a complete body kit that I liked and was wondering if anyone here felt the same way I do... or could point me in the right direction.

A lot of bodykits for the RX7 tend to take away the natural curves of the RX7 (usually in the rear fender & side skirts)

Does anyone know a kit that simply exagerates the curves of the RX7 without changing the overal look of the car to be half R34, half RX8??? I dont like the sharpness a lot of bodkits are offering... and figured it cant hurt to ask those who own the cars XD I\'ll post a pic of the look im going for when I find the magazine again, but, I think you all get what im trying to say :Giggle

Well, i\'m not sure if it is as curvy as you would like, but i quite like the Veilside C1 kit* - has nice flowing lines on the skirt, and keeps the curve at the rear.  The nose is more agressive, but not square/blocky

* i should add that it is the kit currently fitted to my car :D

That was one of the first kits I considered purely for the side skirts... they look very nice on the car. But the front fender doesnt do it for me =P I still love the cars RX7\'s with any kit on them, I just want mine to be all curvy~ :P haha.

Amazingly, the Knight Sports aero kits were the ones I\'d decided on last night :P They look sweet, and barely change the overall curves of the car!!

If you could get in touch that\'d be great!! I\'d really appreciate it!!  :Thumbsup!

Logicalchimp, show me your FD!!! I\'m looking out for inspiration, haha.

Right mate, got some info from my friend about her blokes car......

(Copied and pasted from e-mail - can you tell that this was written by a girl?? lol)

"His car stuff is done by his mechanic - REVs in adelaide but KnightSports (some japanese lot) is the tuning and parts mob - the sponsor.  If this is wot u meant??  Think the guy from Revs will post stuff out to people.  If he contacts them (the guys name is Jason) get him to mention Ash.

Hope that helps matey (",)

All I can say is, thank you very much!!!

This is just the kind of company I was looking for!! Someone who can fiddle with the engine and have it work afterwards!!! =D

Thanks a lot, and I\'ll definitely be getting in contact with them over the next day or so.

:cheers
