Post by: SmbFD3S on May 25, 2008, 01:13:00 AM
As title really, without going to the expense of the "Mazda Special Tool" anyone know how to remove the pilot bearing from the Eccentric Shaft??

Any help appreciated

ive done this allot and have made tools each time. you will need a slide hammer no matter what so it might be worth just buying the propper tool anyway. i have a slide hammer so just keep making little oval inserts to fit the bearing shell.

You can pack it with grease and then use a dowel of some kind, to push it up, but it is fiddly and annoying!
Or you can go in to a friendly rotary tuner and get it doen in a couple of minutes for free.

Mine would not come out so ended up with the dremmel !! I wore the little swine away enough until i could get in there with a few tools to lift it out of its seat. never do it again as the risk of causing damage is quite high.  maybe took me at least an hour.

Mmmm this is off the spare engine, and wanted to prep it for the eventual rebuild, however looking at it a bit more closely i think i may have to have an oversized bearing and machine the shaft, it does look a bit chewed up in there.  Otherwise the shaft is perfectly straight, no run out and the bearing surfaces are fine.

Just looked them up $99.95 plus shipping and taxes, bit much for what you hope for a once only job!

Anyone sell them in the UK? I imagine Mazda price to be more?!

A easy way of pulling the bearing without damage is to knock out the needles then screw a tap (can\'t remember size) into the bearing cage until its got a bite. Put a socket over the protruding tap then a washer. Screw a nut down the threads of the tap onto the washer/socket to extract the bearing as it draws the tap through the socket.

Thanks for that kev, i was thinking about tapping the cage and will give it a go.  I can make a slide hammer that will fit the threads i tap anyway, so as long as i get a good thread then shoud be ok.

Cheers for the help :)

And thanks for looking that up Ricco, although like you say, thats a bit expensive to be honest.  After all a slide hammer is easy to make !! :)
