Hi all, We are having problems with Sarah\'s TII. She got in it after not having driven it for about two weeks and it wouldn\'t start. I, being male, immediately assumed that she had flooded it so I went through the procedure for starting a flooded rotary. To no avail. So I admitted defeat and called the AA. The very nice man could not suss it out either so he said he would tow it to where it needed to go but to try to bump start it whilst he was towing it. Hey presto, it started. I have since changed the fuel pump as I thought it might be that as it seemed that it wasn\'t getting enough fuel through.
This has not helped. Now when Trying to start it I have to pump the throttle to get it to fire up.
Has anyone had this problem in the past? does anyone have any ideas what may be the problem with it? If you can help please either reply here or email me at r32nik@btinternet.com. I really need to get this sorted as Sarah is having to use the Gtr all the time at the moment and I need to take that off the road for a while to sort out a blowing exhaust manifold.
Thanks in advance,
Nik
if it started when towing it sounds like it was flooded, it would need a lot of clearing out before you turn it off and would need to get up to temp to completely de flood.
Did you take the plugs out to de flood it?
Yes mate, the plugs were removed but they didn\'t look wet. It had a run of about 5 miles after it was initialy tow started. It just seems weird that it needs the throttle pumping to start it.
Thanks for the reply though Tony
my egi pretty much always needs the throttle to be pumped for a start up, unless cold
Sorry to hear this Nick, bet she moves the seat more forward than when you are in it ;-)
Was the battery low, might be worth charging that up.
When it does start, does it run and idle ok ?
It runs fine once started Gareth but the idle is lower than it used to be. And yes she moves the seat so far forward I can barely get in lol
i would say that you have an air leak between the air flow meter and the front of the turbo. When there is an air leak, more air is going in the engine than the air flow meter is measuring. Which means it wont like starting and floods easily.
Have a good look at the pipe work from the filter to the turbo and make sure there are no air leaks
Ok thanks tony, I will have a look over the weekend.
Have you ever changed the fuel filter? If not it may be worth a try, Its in the engine bay near the bulk head on the spark plug side, down low [ i think! without looking]
They are about £35 from Mazda. Don\'t try to undo the hose at the filter, undo it at the other end of the hose. Our cars are getting older as are our fuel tanks so it may have rust in from that and it probably needs doing anyway so give it a go. Maybe air filter at the same time?
Good luck.
I did think about that, but I thought I\'d ask first. can you not get a fuel filter from the motor factors?
I would not bother trying, as the chance of it being right with the right bends on it are very slim. Non Mazda ones seem to be a similar price anyway and you risk them not fitting [ not unless someone can recomend one]
Might be worth trying the fuel filter but then if its blocked or partially blocked you would get this problem all the time. I would always recommend new plugs without fail. If you suspect fuel see if you can get the pressure checked. Have a look at the AFM and play with that, give the plunger a good few plunges, this gives the signal to the fuel pump and critical that it gives out the correct voltages. if you suspect this then give me a shout as i have several you can try to see if it rectifies it. I think that air might just be the culprit or dare i say it a worn engine.
Strangely on mine i leave the throttle well alone when cold but quite often have to use the throttle when hot otherwise it takes longer to fire up. The more cranks you have to do to fire it up the more risk of flooding it, thats if there is enough fuel getting through.
Hi Nik
Providing it\'s starting O/K after this I would just treat this one as a flood,
Over the years I have pulled plugs from cars and though "Hmm they are O/K",
put em back in and still no go and yet they have gone with a "bump"!
Thanks Pete, I will give that a try.
Clive, It\'s not starting "OK" as such. Sarah is panicking because you need to pump the throttle to start it so she won\'t drive it incase it won\'t start for her to get home if she goes out in it.
I have the same problem, and it sounds like dthebuk has the same problem if you look at his thread "should i be worried".
Starts fine when cold, but when hot, touch and go if it will start. I changed the plugs first but it made no difference so i got the advise about the fuel filter from Tim at RX motors. He said try it first so there must be some connection with not starting when hot. I have not had chance to use mine since i changed the filters but i will let you know. if it do\'s not work the next thing will be a compresion test which can be done at my local Mazda dealer as i do not live near Tim or Pip my 2 choices for a rebuild.
