Guys
Does anyone know if it is possible to get a roof rack (or bars, or similar) for the FD3s ?
A lot of my fun weekends away involve surfboards, canoes, etc. and it would be handy if i had some way of transporting them from the hire shop :D
(normally, i either have to leave the boot open, and collect my passenger afterwards, or hope that i\'m with mates who have space on their cars)
If one isn\'t available, does anyone have any suggestions about the best way to mount one, should i be able to get one made up / modified? Ideally i would like it to be easily removable (no need for the excess weight if i can avoid it :p) but it\'s not essential.
Thoughts?
Thought are: under no circumstances do this to such a beautiful looking car lol, it\'s nearly as bad as the pick-up RX7 idea :D:D
Hey - that photoshop\'d pickup looked OK, if you got rid of the chrome chequer-board in the back :D
Like i say - I\'d prefer it to be easily removable, so that it is only in place when transfering boards etc. Given i normally do at least one weekend a month, trying to work out how to handle the boards is a bit of a pig.
seen it before so can be done. your 0-60 time may change when loaded :p
judging by this and your other thread, the best advice for you is; buy a daily drive! estate perhaps.
Get a smaller surfboard? I can get my 155 snowboard in the boot of an FD :King
if your into all that surfing stuff how come you don\'t already own a camper van?! lol.
I havent ever seen a roof rack for an rx7 and even if you could get one im struggling to see how you could mount it?

Yeah - but i have to pay to rent a parking space (and it aint particularly cheap). Besides - this would mean that when i go away to places with nice roads i wouldn\'t have the FD to enjoy them in!
dude fire these guys an email with a pic of the roof and then see if they can supply you with a fitting kit for roof bars?
http://www.roofrackshop.com/Car-Products/Thule-Fitting-Kits/Thule-Traditional-Fitting-Kits/allfilter000244c.aspx
ive seen it done with clamps round the door area. hideos.
just looked on that site for roof rack and they make one for the gen 2 rx7, and it costs £140 for the kit!! jeez. but ill bet they can make one up for the FD.
Cheers for that link - most useful
(have submitted a question about fitting for an FD3s)
I have the install manual for a roof rack that the car owned while in japan but im glad to report it fell off on the boat on the way over. :rollin

I know it is bad form to quote oneself, but I\'ve just got a reply back - and they don\'t currently have anything to fit the FD3s :/
Time to carry on looking, i guess...
Halfords do them, Made by thule.
You need the bars, fitting kit and footpack. I can get part numbers if i must and price it up for you....
LOL at this thread :D
I say no to roofracks on an fd.
Is just wrong.
It\'s quite possible you\'re clinically insane, Mr. Chimp, despite the "logical" part. But in a good way, you\'ve given me a damn good laugh anyway. My advice would be take up a more RX-7-friendly hobby, like, uh, tiddlywinks, maybe, then there\'s no prob fitting the equipment in the boot lol. At least if you do fit a roof rack you\'d have loads of room for solar panels, maybe with the current fuel crisis (wot crisis?) that\'s the way forward, maybe enough solar panels would save a bit on the fuel bills!
I know :D
I\'m not intending to drive around with the bars on - but if i\'ve got them in the boot, then i can use them if required. Besides, with a strong enough surf board, I could have a car-sized spoiler - lotsa pressure to keep me on the road at high speed :D *cough*
I\'ve only quickly skimmed over this thread so forgive me if the question has been answered... Anyway, I remember a Canadian company who will send an rx7 roof rack over the pond. There is a thread on this forum somewhere. I wanted to stick a bike on the top of mine or some snowboards. No harm in a roof rack!
*crys*

I found the previous forum thread that covers this: http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31791
The Canadian website is http://www.yakima.com (http://www.yakima.com/)- it looks like they still do them (it\'s quite a nice site for picking a bike rack :D). However, they only list US & Canadian dealers, but apparently they can ship overseas if you phone them (from the previous thread).
Will have to give them a ring in a few weeks (once I\'ve been paid).
Cheers for the tip-off - was able to find it in the search this time :D
I cant understand all you idiots who say this shouldnt be done. Why on earth should we buy another car just so we can go biking/surfing or whatever? Isnt it more sacrilige to break up an FD for spares? Yet no-one on here complains when that happens.
LogicalChamp, you buy that roofrack.
I bought mine from Chrissa at Action man and truck, http://www.vanandtruckworld.com/, in Pickering, near Ajax ( near Toronto )
Last time I spoke to them, they were willing to ship to the UK, ( not cheap, but they were willing to do it).
... and to those of you who think a roof rack looks hideous on an RX7, when you\'re driving your Honda/BM/Volvo around.... THAT looks far more hideous.
Just adding that I recommend you get the wind fairing, as the bars do make a bit of noise at speed, and the fairing reduces the noise.
Well, after digging around at Halfords, it turns out Thule do a bar kit for the RX FD ;)
In Typical fashion, half the parts weren\'t in stock, but it looks like the entire kit should be around 140 quid (which is not too bad, considering no shipping :)
I did say that halfway up the thread :P
*sigh* indeed you did. :Hammer
I was in there about a month ago, and coulda sworn that there was nothing on their little flip chart of supported cars.... Hence being a bit suprised when i saw it on there this time.
That said - the box for the feet is huuumongous - almost big enough to hold the full kit, or so it seems (and it\'s a lot bigger than any of the other feet boxes :D)
Halfords? Are you SURE its for the FD? I remember they listed one for FB, and I "think" FC, but never seen for FD.
If, so thats fantastic, I paid a LOT for the Yakima rack, but having said that, I bought fittings for putting bikes on, too.
I think the box might contain some sort of "short roof" kit - I seem to remember you needed that kit for the FC?

They just say it is for the RX7, \'91 - \'95 or somesuch. Don\'t remember the dates exactly, but they defo didn\'t match the FB/FC
The kit was (from memory) 2x square bars, 1x feet kit, 1x fitting kit (Thule 0003), and 1x short roof adapter (Thule 477)
Given that the dates match my car, if it doesn\'t fit i figure they gotta give me my money back :D
I put my reg in the computer and it spat those back out at me and said that thule did them.
if it dosent fit they will give you your money back yeah...
Ok, in a way, it makes sense. Once I saw a Mazda sales brochure for the UK RX-7 and it had a picture of the car with skis on a roof rack, so there must have been an option to buy them from the dealer. I asked at my dealer, but they cam up with no part numbers, although the parts man did say "I think Thule made them". Perhaps Thule agreed to supply only Mazda for a time, and that agreement has now lapsed to allow them to sell it direct?
I have that UK sales brocbure and I am pretty sure it has part #\'s in it. Will dig it out tonight and let you know.

If Mazda advertised the car with roof racks, then its not SUCH a bad idea. :)
Sorry for the delay in replying, I FINALLY found that brochure.
Good news is it has "Roof Carrier", "Ski Attachment" and "Surfboard Attachment" listed in there, bad news is I don\'t currently have a scanner to show you the pics. Should be able to get something up in the next couple of days.
Part numbers:
Roof Carrier: F100V4701G
Ski Attachment: H380V4702G
Surfboard Attachment: J001V4703G
Cheers, Craig
Still no scanner, so here\'s a photo :)
cheers ;)
I think a little part of me just died.
Yep, the part that was living in a fantasy world of "the RX-7 is a racing car not meant for the road"
Man i think i want to take up surfing just so i have reason to own a roof rack!
lol how awesome is that roof rack :) it just screams **** you to all those idiots with big vans and mpv\'s at the beach lol
I think the ski rack says more about the guy driving it. Since most of us drive like Granny going to her WI meeting even in a light drizzle for fear of watching the rear end overtake us, having a ski rack must say "I\'m a double \'ard b*st*rd who thinks nothing of hooning up a slush and slurry coated mountain pass in a 250 bhp rear-drive animal just so I can hurl meself off the side of a black run. Pit bulls? ha! I eat em for breakfast!"
Nik sums it up nicely ! :-)
FD3s Nuttah, good one, too. :-)
