Title: fuel surge/half tank of fuel...
Post by: karl_tate on May 19, 2008, 10:19:45 PM
did a little search but not much info.

anyway im sick of getting to half a tank of fuel and having to fill up again plus this means that when i fill up again, that half a tank of fuel will of been in there for a while??

i also dont really want to have 50+ litres of fuel when going down the strip etc etc

so boys and girls give me some ideas. is there any other way apart for getting a swirl pot??

What fuel pump have you got?

forgot to mention, single turbo using a GTR pump.

change the pump - i used to get the same and Re:Worx put a pump in that was about twice the size of what i had (which was already aftermarket) and it cured it completely. I almost ran out of fuel at my last trackday as it never happened!

The stock tank has baffles installed, but they aren\'t the best. You could try a different pump or installed a swirl pot.

I think you\'ll find that the gtr pump is fine even with very little fuel in the tank. You may want to check how it\'s been installed.

Have a look at this.

http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=694665

It seems a very good idea and with the price of the dollar now, a bargain as well.

I\'ve got one of those covers being fitted at the mo - shoud be able to report back in a few weeks what difference it has made. Like you say - with the value of the dollar it seemed worth a gamble!

That\'s odd Karl - I\'m running the BNR33 pump (which I guess is the same one?) and have no issues even down to fumes.  Could be the positioning of the pickup in the tank not being quite right?  Maybe the hose is bent uo and not sucking from the bottom corner of the tank.

Edit: just seen Brian\'s response, great minds and all that!

If you have the foot to the floor its like hitting a brick wall all of a sudden..

No petrol getting to the engine... Very bad!!

Just suprised someone would install afuel pump with no sock. Put a stoc sock on and you will be fine.

A sock isnt going to help....the problem you have is drawing air when the car goes round a bend and the fuel goes to one side!  A sock should be fitted to act as a basic filter, although most are about 90microns so will only stop rocks!

yeh realise its the air getting sucked up, may be my pump is not sitting right in the tank if others dont have problems??

it mainly does it when im giving it beans and usually happens around 4-5k when full boost is reached

I have driven many fd\'s hard with the skyline pump and none suffer the issue you have. The only difference between yours and the one\'s I have installed and driven is that it has been installed properly where the pump sits at the right height, and they have a sock fitted.

I had exactly this problem ever since Reworx fitted a Bosche 040 pump along with bigger primary injectors to my car. I experimented with the height but this made no difference whatsoever. Their solution at the time was to fit a swirl pot and another lift pump. Unfortunately, shortly after this one of my tips went and I needed a rebuild. It is at Carl\'s at the moment for mapping, and on his advise have changed the pump to an 044 as he thinks this may help alot with this problem. It will be interesting to see if it does. I will be finding out shortly!

Foam will only prevent slosh

make sure you select the correct foam for the grade of fuel

but it isn\'t going to solve the problem alone....sorry

you need to get a collector to sit inside the tank as well

Post by: Aubec on September 11, 2009, 11:26:37 AM
COuld it be a cloggged filter because of running without a sock?  I.e. the pump can supply enough fuel to keep the engine going up to full boost, but at that point it just cant flow enough through the dirty filter so it feels like fuel cut but is just fuel shortage?

Brian is right.  I have a GTR pump installed by RE:WORX, it had been modified by HKS in such a way that it doesn\'t require a swirl pot.  Speak to RE:WORX

Post by: AtomicRex on September 21, 2009, 05:22:31 PM
The reason the swirl pot is there, and without wishing to sound too patronising, to keep a head of fuel when the fuel level within the tank starts to decrease.

I don\'t see how a modified fuel pump can remain in a head of fuel???

I also have that same pump. When i first got the car it used to fuel surge awfully as soon as it got to half a tank.

ReWorx fitted this same pump and I have never had a problem since; i can run the tank until it coughs empty.

This is on trackdays and sprinting, so its hard use.

I asked about swirl pots and such and they said i wouldn\'t need one if i put this pump in. They were right.

i run a 044 and have no probs :)

i can try taking my pump out to see how its fitted if you like?

there must be a right and wrong way to fit it for so many people to have surge problems...

Im using the r33 gtr pump with 1650 secondaries, aeromotive reg and single tub, Not seen any problems yet but I did fix the pump about 2mm off the bottom of the tank with the standard sock fitted directly to the bottom. I\'d say proper fitting is the key also worth checking the live and earth at the pump

cheers for the offer malice, would be good if you dont mind.

if you look at the first page you can see how my current pump is fitted to the standard holder. maybe the gtr pump is too high, i dont know, have never looked right into the tank to see where my pump sits.

If you don\'t have the right kind of filter you will most definitely magnify this issue with the bosch 044.

Quote from: karl_tate;643168sorry, i mean why would it be worse?? surely a filter is a filter?? so what filter should i use with the 044

The 044 sucks very hard and it does not have a normal sock fitted due to the connector at the bottom of the 044. You will find some of the filters that connect to the 044 pumps when the pump sucks the fuel up it causes the filters to collapse and you get fuel starvation. The Jay racing off filters suffer from this. So all i\'m saying is depending on what filter you use can magnify the issue you currently experience, because the 044 does not use a normal sock/filter and the 044 pump sucks so hard.

I gonna be running 2 bsch 044 intank I have got some pre filters that hsoul be compatible but don\'t wan to recommend something base simply on what I research but rather on experience. so hence I have not recommened the one I have as I have not actually used it yet. I can however tell by the design that it will collapse like the jay racing ones do. If you want to try what I got based on research rather experience then I\'ll PM you.
