What turbos do people recommend to use on a half bridge engine? Gonna change the one i have due to heat problems. Running a GT4794R with a 1.0 hot side.
The lag is aweful in it so want something that is gonna spool a lot sooner
Cheers
Half bridge should be able to spool that no problem.
What would you describe as awful lag?

not till 3.6k
T04Z with 1.15A/R exhaust housing?
want to go bigger
What about Masterpower T-70 Q trim 1.00a/r think some guys on here have had good results with it and priced very reasonably.

Jon
Needs to be v clamp top and bottom as well
Can you get an adapter plate from ebay to fit a t4 turbo?
nope thats the problem i am having. Needs to be v clamp for manifold and down pipe

sure does, taking turbo off tonight to see diameter etc. Seen a nice GT4294r i might get

i cant see how that is awfull lag:Hammer
Quote from: mx1311;500305i cant see how that is awfull lag:Hammer
As above, that isnt turbo lag! try 6000rpm now thats turbo lag:Giggle to be honest anything bigger than a to4z is going to need a very small exhaust housing to spool it up fast, then you run into heat problems as i think blitzboy did with his to4z and a halfbridge with around 1.2 bar of boost.:WaveBye
yep thats what happend. Running A.R 1.0 and the heat cracked the rear exhaust fins. Thinking GT4202R with AR of 1.15 or 1.28
Quote from: mx1311;500305i cant see how that is awfull lag:Hammer
sorry dude meant 4.6k :rollin
is that full boost at 4.6 or positive boost? thats not too bad for full boost.
Get geoff to emai/fax you some power graphs of other bridges and see what turbo they run and the lag compared to yours. Stert\'s car runs a T51 and seem very happy with it for hill climbs and that has over 500 rwhp.
no thats positive boost not full boost. But the problem with my wastegate could have something to do with that as it was completly shot.
Might go for a larger rear housing and add a little lag but then be a bit safer on heat side of things.
All too bloody complicated lol
A-spec GT45r ? Link:

Shaun
mmm nice turbo Shaun but think im gonna go for a GT4202R - exactly the same spec as a T51R SPL
So did you have a T51 KAI spec and now you moving to SPL spec?
How much did you find GT4202R?
yep constant excessive heat through high back pressure due to not having a big enough rear housing past 1.1 bar caused my last year failure of the apex seals to warp then chip eventually over time.
Basically the porting was too big and flowed too much for the rear exhaust housing to handle at high boost pressures, hopefully now I have the T51 it should cure it
Yep moving from Kai to SPL with a large rear housing
Found it for £1200 + vat so not really a killer and includes v-bands top and bottom so will just go straight on to mine.
Think the engine is ok on mine, its a only a few tiny cracks on the back of the housing so will do until i get the new turbo
cool , coz i like the design of the v band manifolds, you got a link of where you found it?, might go bigger next year
aet- turbos, turbo dynamics and Owen Developments all do it Mark
Just hope my old one holds up until i get the new one. Lucky its not the front fins and only the exhuast side
HKS used to on purpose clip the rear exhaust fins on the T04R and called it the cutback to reduce back pressure, I suppose you got the mod for free lol :D
lol
Just need to measure up everything now. They actually do a 1.44 A.R, bit laggy me thinks lol so gonna settle for 1.15 or 1.28
ahh looked at thier websites, all they mantion is the T4 footprint nothing about v-band inlet to the turbine housing :(
its extra - about £30 or so
You need to speak to them about it
Do you have an egt gauge fitted??
rgds
Brian
I have now but car isnt running as its in the bodyshop at mo. So i wont know what temps im getting yet
Got my EGT probe fitted this time for this years fun, are you fitting pre turbo or post?
post in downpipe. Wont be assssssss acurate but will help big time
got told pre turbo can eat the probe away very easily.
yeah it does shorten the life, hopefully it will last long enough to map to 1.5 BAR
should be just hope it doesnt snap off in the turbo housing lol
right turbo off this week to take all the measurements
ive just brought a gt42 with 1.28 rear for my half bridge
what price have you being quoted dude???
colum
about £1300 mate + vat but might be more as i have to add v bands all round
Hi Ash,
It may to sit down and decide if you want driveabilaty or out and out power from your car,
With the smallish hot side your present Turbo has I would suggest it should spool up quicker than what it is, so it may well be the way the engine is ported that is causing "your problem"
If you just want the car more drivable then maybe a TO4Z will help (Mark has lots of experience with these) bearing in mind Chris Impey ran 10\'s on one of these, or another to consider is the GT40 on a T4 flange,
I would however stay away from the GT42/ GT45 family as you will end up with a higher boost threshold than you currently have,
Hope this helps,
Quote from: AshRX;500860about £1300 mate + vat but might be more as i have to add v bands all round
Don\'t forget also the with a different Turbo the positioning may be different as well, needing at least a different down-pipe fabricated
Clive im running a GT47 at the mo and the T51r Kai and SPL are same size as what i have. I have been told by a reputable turbo company that the GT4202 is the same size as these. Turbo is coming of today for all the measurements to be taken. Just hope i have enough room if i have to make a few modifications

wish mine looked like that :rollin
have massive front housing on mine and a lot smaller rear. Spoke to Garret and they have no listing now for it so it was probably a hybrid. Not cheap to repair.
Getting told so many different turbos to get just not sure what to do lol
The engine was built by John and RE:Worx as the potential for a 10 sec car with the RE engine and half bridge, polished this polished that. Engine is fine no problems there. But i do use it on the street and so I have to take that into account. Its not a daily drive so can bear with a bit of noise and uncomfortable drive.
Dunno what to do :Nono!:Nono!
I would suggest something like this, ball bearing version:Thumbsup!

Cheers Steve, thats roughly the same as GT4202R i was looking at except with a slightly bigger housing. 1.28AR hopefully will be ok with it. Just need v band instead of T4 to maifold though
thats the exact son of a gun ive just brought :)
colum
oh and steve, i aint forgot about your stuff, he\'s not picking up the phone at the moment dude :)
Do they do it in V Band though?? im running 60mm manifold and not sure if i have room for a T4 - V Band adaptor
Very interesting peice of kit :

mmmm Tial housing
Thats what i need
yeah Shaun that looks well plush
No its not lol
Just spoke to Turbo Dynamics and the biggest hotside Tial do is a 1.01....looks like its gonn ahave to be T4 flange time

remember an 1.00 AR on a T04Z say is different then a 1.00 AR on a Gt42, the 1.00 AR on a GT42R is much bigger
yep but think a 1.0 on mine is getting too hot for some reason and gettting to much back pressure on the hot side. Managed to get one for a very good price with 1.15 or 1.28 rear housing and they might be able to make the housing for inlet V Band so all good
Good diagram here
so if went for a proper gt42 instead of the hybrid you have, I reckon the 1.0 you have at the mo would be smaller then the 1.0 that comes with GT42.
I would measure the width of your current exhaust housing and ask TD for the width of the exhaust housing that comes with the one they are selling.
the tial vband connection would be cool
good plan Batman.
Its coming off tonight so ill measure then. Just have to make sure if i cant get the Tial hosuing that the T4 adaptor works
Quote from: BlitzBoy;500916yeah Shaun that looks well plush
Thats my next turbo upgrade after this :Giggle Although then the FB gets the FD\'s engine and turbo :3gears-lh
Shaun
as mark says, the a/r doesnt mean anything on its own. the rest of the turbo size has an influence as a/r isnt a size its a ratio. The 20b is running a 0.96 exhaust on a gt45 and making 470 rwhp at 0.8 bar with no sign of heat beeing an issue.
Some of the \'tuners\' on here will tell you that the garret turbo\'s cant take the heat on high hp applications, especially the GT range.
A split diaphram in the w/g would seriously effect the lag you had, so unless you look at old graphs from when it was working properly or drive it with a fixed w/g you wont get an accurate idea.
There is somthing to be said about learning from other mistakes. There are a couple of half bridges running in this country that have both run consistently above 500 rwhp with no issues and they are using T51\'s. That would be my choice as you can pretty much be certain of the results :)
you could always go for ye old truck t88 34d
seems to be holding good for 1.4+ on willdays car.
colum
yeah i was looking at the GK one.
Lets just say i took the turbo apart last night and now its in the bin
post pics of the failed turbo my man be interesting look at
will do.
Grrrr 3 week wait on the turbo. Anyone know who is selling a T51r at mo??? Need a turbo a.s.a.p
which one have you decided to get then?...the same one?
we took it of last night and i need a 4" vband outlet and 3.75" inlet vband. The GT models dont do VBand inlet on GT40, GT42 models which means i will have to go GT47 to get a vband. Not sure if i will have room to put a GT42 on with a vband to T4 flange
I know a Spl of Kai will fit straight on with no probs though
probably best to stick to what you know and it will just bolt on....and no aggro!
Can you not just reuse your rear housing ...which has the v band?....and just make sure that the new turbo\'s rear wheel and fit?
oh...how is your rear housing connected to the centre section....bolt or vband?
Connected by VBand, cant use rear housing as it has a crack all round where it was originally a T4 and a V Band has been welded on.
Options now are true HKS ones or a GT47 - getting them cheap and in the country is another matter lol
Its not a GT47!!!!
what do you mean Ross??
Not to worry just bought a turbo so hopefully all sorted now
cool what did you buy in the end?
GT4202r, just need T4 footprint flange and we are away
i bet that gonna be well lazy!!!!....hopefully it will solve your heat issues
yeah i recon it will be quite quick once on and mapped lol
hopefully ED, there are a few of us running AR of over 1.2 so lag shouldnt be too much of a problem and hopefully as you said sort the heat problem out
Quote from: AshRX;501276GT4202r, just need T4 footprint flange and we are away

1.24 mate, might be lag but keeps it cool

just found out they can rebuild my old one so will be up for sale if anyone wants it to get rebuilt
I seem to have missed all this. ffs Ash will you ever stop spending money ? we all just got a paycut too buddy, did that slip your mind lol ??
hope the new turbo doesn\'t dissapoint, more time spent waiting though now eh ...
we measured up today and all good...its massive lol

not yet just waiting for the turbo manifold footprint to turn up then we are good to go. Should be out of bodyshop and running next week

take it mate, im moving over to 5NC on monday
Hi Ash
Turbo likes boost made over 650 on one at 1.6 every .2 bar made huge power gains that was on a smaller rear housing than yours;-)
J
That turbo will melt just like all the GT turbos.
Just today seen a GT42R melted, and destroyed the engine. That was on a well tuned car,437 rwhp at 1.1 bar.
Chris Impeys car runs 1000c at the exhaust port, never melted the turbo,HKS T51R kai.
i have kept a eye on this checked it today infact so far had no problems car runs under 900 at 1.6 after the turbo, how are you tim? will be visiting soon!

Impeys turbo should be morte scared of apex seals than heat!!! Every time the car runs, the poor little T51 gets apex seals thrown at it! :WaveBye:p
It has been clipped a few times, now there is so much clearance there is no chance of the apex seals hitting the turbine wheel!
running GT one before didnt melt we found out, just had a tip chucked through it
Hi Tim
what was the A/R on this gt42.
thanks

The hks t51 is a proven turbo to withstand heat,i think the key to the gt series on a rotary is to run a large a/r on the turbine side,by the way who did the tuning?
Quote from: Timrxmotors;502486A/R 1.15 on turbine side.
Yes,1.15a/r on a T6 frame.

which should be ok as im running 1.28 hot side
Quote from: AshRX;502586which should be ok as im running 1.28 hot side
a 1.15 on a T6 frame is likely to be bigger than a 1.28 on only a T4 frame. Ours is a .96 on a T6 frame for the 3 rotor
