Hi,
Just thought I\'d keep you up to date with proceedings following my request for help removing the sump and your veru useful advice.
I removed the bolts holding the shock absorbers and anti roll bar to the lower arms and removed the sterring rack bolts.
This allowed the sub frame to drop sufficiently to fully remove the sump.
i thought this was the best policy as I did not want the old Mazda sealant dropping in to the sump when I cleaned the block.
I have attached a picture showing the sub frame lowered and the sump cleaned and all the old sealant that came off the block which would have ended up in the sump.
Interestingly the oil strainer was at least 50-60% blocked with bits of sealant from the last time someone carried out this exercise, so it was worth fully removing the sump.
So what I now have to do, is aling the sub frame with the mounting bolts/studs and the engine mounting studs, whilst lifting the sub frame and refixing with nuts and bolts. Only 1 jack and two hands so I left it for tonight !
I\'ll have my weetabix for tea and will start again after work.
Thanks for your previous advice, it really gave me the direction to get this job done without taking it to a garage.
Thanks

Nice one mate, glad you decided to tackle this one yourself, it always gives you that extra sense of pride when you do something yourself dont :) and you\'ve saved a whole load of cash.....
Have you put the sump back on now ? What sealant did you use?
It\'s worth checking the condition of the engine mounts while you have the chance too
Hi,
I used a Loctite high temp sump sealant rated up to 350 deg C, it contains high levels of copper and is copper coloured. (hope its up to the job).
Yes the sump is back on, just need to lift the lower suspensions arms with the sub frame up to the chassis.
I will partly lower the engine/gearbox to see if this helps line up the engine mounts with the sub frame mounting holes.
The engine mounting on the turbo side (where the oil leak was), was contaminated with oil, but when it was cleaned up it looked okay.
Chris
mmm, I have a serious oil leak, and I wonder if its my sump, too. My engine has been dragged around the garage and shed on the sump, so I might have upset the sealing?
Or you may have worn a hole in the sump !! Lol.
