Title: Newbie looking to buy an RX7
Post by: dan-hipgrave on May 17, 2008, 08:47:27 PM
Hi guys,

Im looking to buy a 3rd Gen RX7, and have seen one I like for sale at Daitoku (whats their reputation like on here?) - http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_popup.jsp?did=72555&pageid=1&originalid=&gid=nogroup&tid=2&start=8&distance=0&adcategory=cars&channel=DEALERPAGE&id=200820310116283

Now I went to view it today and it looks amazing on the outside, interior is a bit shabby but nothing too serious. My main concern was with the engine. When the guy started it up, it fired up ok but a lot of smoke came out, and it smoked continously the whole time it was idling (couldnt drive it as its not registered). It stank of fuel not oil, and wasnt white smoke either so not coolant. He said all Rex engines smoke, but I wouldnt have thought so?? Could it be where its not been driven properly in the last couple of months, just moved around a showroom?

It also idled rough - a steady 900rpm, but didnt sound smooth. However I believe the engine has been \'side ported\' as it said so on the rear end of the car, and the engine itself was remarkably clean, but the sellers havent advertised this so I dont think they know. Would \'side porting\' cause a rough idle and overfuelling? What is it?

Cheers for your help,

Dan

Hi

Well just my opinion but it looks like far too much money for a 95 that isn\'t mint WITHOUT a rebuild.

You may get a little smoke on start up but only for a short while.
40k miles on a 13 year old car??????????????
I take it that as it\'s not registered it\'s a fresh import.

Take a look at some of the members cars for sale on here, bound to be good examples in that price range, with hostory...........

Keep checking back I\'m sure there will be other opinions.

Good luck

John

Or as an alternative....http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110253605847&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=001  Lots of service history and well cared for, also I\'m not too far away.

Thanks for the replies guys - whats a more sensible price for the Daitoku RX then?

Interloper - I like your rex, but its out of my price range unfortunately, plus it doesnt help your the other side of the country :(

Rich - Yours is a great rex, really like that. I have always bought cars in the past to modify but anyone that changes anything on yours needs to be shot. Im definately interested, but its right at the top of my budget. Is there any room for negotiation?

I am also very interested in this RX7 at JM Imports - http://www.jm-imports.co.uk/cardetails/maxda/rx715.html

Price is £8800 otr, and looks absolutely mint and on the plus side it has had a rebuilt engine fitted. I think this is a better bet than the Daitoku one but pushes my budget to the limit..
