I was thumbing though a haynes manual (thanks prof :D) and noticed that some RXs have a stock OEM electric fan on the front of the radiator, I guess this is for countries that are hotter, so I dunno if a UK spec FC would have it, but I was just thinking of if/when I get an electric fan on mine, would it be better to put an OEM front mount on, or put 1 on the back like most others.
i think its easier on the back - far more space and you wont have to remove the rad to fit it :D
Hmm this is true lol what fans are everyone using? I know Prof has a HUGE Volvo fan in his garage that takes off lol :D
I used an old Volvo one when I did this conversion a few years back, just make sure you find one that will fit inside the stock cowling :yes
and if someone DOES do this - can they do a write up - with pics and the exact fan they use ( for example, 1997 Volvo S80 2.9 T6 fan ) just so that we all know what to buy :D
I think Prof should take some photos when he does his :D why isn\'t there a \'guide\' section on this forum? Or is that cause im not yet a member? (don\'t worry I will be a member, just need to start my new job) lol
Got it in one - when you become a member, all will become clear :D
wooo *is excited* lol :) yeah don\'t worry I will be a member soon :)
i\'m sure i read somewhere that the electric fan offers no gain?
ah i did
"I want to install an electric fan. How well will it cool? How much power does it give me? Which fan, and how do I install it?
In short, you gain a small amount of throttle response when free-revving in neutral, and any power gained (less then 1HP) is almost immeasurable. Cooling will be no better then using the stock clutch fan since the fan is only used at idle or very low speed driving, and it is the thermostat that regulates the temperature of the engine and not the fan. There\'s really no compelling reason to install an electric fan unless you need the space (FMIC, 20B install, etc.) or your stock clutch fan died. Remember that the stock clutch fan freewheels when it is not needed, so it doesn\'t suck any power from the engine."
I installed one because my stock fan went norks skyward and every supposed \'good\' second hand one I brought was equally knackered :) And it makes it easier to change the belts :) (Especially on that car is it had no air pump either)
Also gives you more room if you want to go FMIC, removes that cluttered look.
Furb had a good write up and pics on his black FC project.
I\'m putting electric one in mine - purley to have less clutter and the room is there for future use if V mount is going in :)
Thread revival! lol
Had a seach about, but has anyone done a write up on this yet?
i played about with various very large electric fans and the best fan by far is the stock viscous fan, on track for sure. It draws so much more than any electric fan of the same diameter
I\'ve got two 80W electric fans - 8" - with airflow of 1700CFM each - reckon that will do the job :) :)
i fitted a 19inch 4600 cfm fan from a lincoln V8 that i got from the states, the cowling was just about exactly the same size as the stock rad which made it easy to fit. The stock fan still kept it cooler on track. The problem with 2 smaller fans is that the centre 6 inches doesnt move any air because its taken up by motor. Its only the remaining blade length that actually moves any air.
I assume to fit 2 8 inch fans you are not running the stock rad? Being square, i would imagine fitting 2 fans that size is a bit tricky to get maximum coverage.
Any how to\'s yet?
My fan belt has snapped twice, ending up in the engine getting a bit warm, and wondering whether or not I can elimate this totally by putting in an electric fan?
But what else do I need to change?

Yeh - it\'s a Koyo copy. Also, the centre section of the fan is quite small - actualy - I have a feeling they might even be 9" or 10" - it was a squeeze to get them in! They are mounted diagonally.
I\'ll put piccies up tomorrow on my rebuilt thread - nearly done ;)
PS - just checked - they are 10" fans
Mine is a fan I got from the USA, not sure what its off but it fits really nicely. You will also need some sort of fan controller so it knows when to kick in. I have a seperate fan controller for mine that also displays the temps, its pretty good as you can see exactly when the stat opens and when the fan is running. You will need to ditch the cowling as its best to get a cowling that goes with the fan and will free up loads of room in the engine bay. My 12v source is direct from the battery with 30amp fuse but the fuse size will depend on your setup. Twin fans are good as most controllers will allow you to vary each fan speed seperatley. I was lucky and kept my aircon fan as well so I use my PFC to control that as well at certain temps but that fan is my backup in case the main fan fails.
my fan controller sits with my boost controller in a modified centre console. I would seriously refrain from having a manual switch as you may just forget to switch it on until its too late. Standard water temp gauge is either halfway normal or its cooked.
