Title: A/c removal
Post by: Bobbit on May 10, 2008, 02:20:32 PM
Hi,

I\'ve done a search for how to remove the Air con but have found nowt, can anyone point me in the direction of a how to?

I thought as i never used the damn thing and last time i tried it, it smelt like old socks filled with dead things that i\'d save some weight.

Thanks

Rob

Pretty easy this one.
Remove the undertray
Remove the AC condensor rad below the water rad.
Remove the AC dryer by the battery.
Remove the ali pipes all the way upto the bulkhead/firewall
Remove the AC compressor below the power steering pump
Buy a seat toledo belt. 1.9 turbo diesel without air conditioning, years from 1993-1998 halfords part number HB925G.
If you want to remove the AC matrix, remove the glovebox and it\'s behind there somewhere.

Few tips...

It might be easier to temporarily remove the power steering pump (PS). You need to remove the pulley..best done with an air compressor impact wrench. The pulley is bakerlite so be carefull. If you remove the pipes to the PS pump, top up with auto transmission/PS fluid after. To bleed it, turn the steering wheel lock to lock a few times with engine running.

Remove the battery along with the tray so you can unplug the pressure switch for the AC.

it has 4 bolts- can be done from above pretty simply. dont need to remove pulley or anything.

the 4 bolts go into the a/c compressor from the passenger side wing. the heads are between the inner wing/chassis leg and the engine, 2 top 2 bottom. 12mm  if i remember correctly.

Either 12 of 14mm iirc - and the rear lower one is an absolute f**ker to get to.

THX RobbieRX-7!

ok guys so these four screws are actually on side...it might be a bit tricky to get to them...hmm

who was deinstalling it without taking a P/S pump off? is it difficult?
SIH did you do it like that?

I removed mine at the weekend, took me 30 mins. Put the front of the car up on axle stands and worked on top and underneath. 12mm 4 bolts into compressor. Lower rear is easiest from underneath. Pipes are easy 2 remove aswell. Wiring loom is behind glove box, if you want to go that far. u can get a belt for a Seat Toledo 1.9tdi 93 - 99 no a/c which is the same part. My water temp is running 2 degrees cooler now, cant complain.

I took of the PS pump, yeah, as manoevering the AC pump out is an absolute bugger, removing the PS pump made it a lot easier.

had no trouble removing the ac with the ps in place, tbh the whole job is pretty noddy and you cant go far wrong.

Wow. Didn\'t expect so many replies. Thanks for the info on removing the compressor, i\'ll give that a blast. The ad for the a/c was fairly easy to remove sickboy so i would recommend removing that, but remember to undo the pipes before you undo the 4 screws holding it in place, there is one massive nut holding the bottom piipe inplace, its 19mm so get a big spanner ready.

Get rid of the rad aswell. Big thing to remember, dont just undo the pipes and pull out, let them vent all there gas off first so crack the bolts slowly. Aldo av a pan ready just incase u get the residual oil dripping out.

oh when you vent the gas (which is illegal btw) dont have any naked flames or anything, e.g. a fag nearby. high temps turn the refrigerant into phosgen. it is also heavier than air so will settle below the car- recommend you crack open a joint (any joint) and then leave it for a while to be safe. 20 to 30 mins should be plenty, so go make a brew!

Im just trying to find a thread about removing the, whole air con section behind the glovebox as well as these parts.

I have removed the whole air con sys when the dash was off, now my blowers only work when i plug the air con matrix back in (the part behind the glovebox). is there anything i can do so i dont have to re fit the air con matrix. ie is there a resistor i can use? or just use the electrics from the part minus the rad that goes between the blower and the heater. im confused. ive tried a few things and blown a few fuses. also the heater still doesnt work even with it plugged back in, only the blower when i switch the heater to max.

This is a pain. if anyone can give some advice on this id be a happy chap
