Hi All
I had a re-build 1000 miles ago, all is fine however, recently I have put on the A/C and it is not blowing cold air, the air is warm. The air is a touch cooler but defo not even close to what is should be…
It worked fine before the re-build. Kerim at Powergains is away on holiday so is the anything I can do / check my self to make it work as at the moment I am roasting in my fd, it is my daily driver. Maybe some fluid got drained when the re-build was done? Or is that a silly question?
Regards,
Michaelb
get a re gas mate
may need a re gas. You can usually get it done for betwwen £40-£60.
^ yep as already said. The air con system will have been emptied to get the block out for the rebuild.
^^As above and dont be tempted to buy one of those kits from halfords as you will have air and moisture in the system which will need to be vacuumed out.
Danny
Thanks for your replays
Do I buy the gas or does a garage gets it done for me, can I do it my self?
Is there a gas canister or something I go and change?
Is it a big job?
Regards,
Michaelb
Dont bother doing yourself get a garage to vac, refill and check for leaks if you do it yourself and have a leak then thats money down the drain.
Regards Danny
when you get a re gas they put a dye and anti bacterials thingies in it, then they vacume it, then refill it. the dye is for spotting leaks. i would get a garage to do it mate.(make sure they know how many gramms to put in it)
you dont have to drain any of the a/c systems to get the engine out in one piece.
I think quick Fit are doing some sort of offer at the mo whereby they\'ll check for leaks and regas, and if it doesn\'t work, they\'ll give you a refund :)
If you need any bits, i\'ve got all the air con components sitting in my back garden that i\'ll sell for pennies as they\'re no use to me :)

Thanks. That is excellent; let me go to Quick Fit, they are round a corner from me and if I need any bits I will let you know. I will probably go on Monday so I will let you know one way or the other...

By the way, can any garage deal with the RX7 A/C set up? Or will they charge me a fair bit since they are not the specialists..

Thanks, I will defo get a garage to do it just a question which one I could trust wtin my car, Kerim at Powergains is away ATM

If I was you I would get a local specialist who works on air con everyday to do it rather than a tyre fitter with the machine who might do one a week.
I\'ve had a few bad experience\'s with those type\'s of places and dont trust any of them:mad:, if you need any more advice let me know air con is my trade;)

Hi
I am in Crouch End N8, where is your garage based? Post code please, How long would it take if it only needs re-gasing?
If you prefer to send me a personal e-mail the address is michael@bukowskicomputers.co.uk
I am boiling in my car atm, it is my daily driver and I use it around 3 - 5 times a day

What year is your car mate ?
If it uses R12 (now illegal) then not many garages will be able to do it, you need an equivalent gas (freeze12) which the likes of Kwik fit will not be able to do....
The R12 system also needs special oils to make it work and stop it seizing the compressor.... If you go and they put R134A refrigerant in, it will damage the system beyond repair so be careful.
You can get a conversion to R134A (the new gas they use) but this is expensive as involves replacing parts.

Hi
Thanks for the valuable info, good point…what a pain that has become…
I have a 96 RB Bathurst with ported and re-build engine by Powergains Motor Sport.
I would probably only go to a specialist or back to Powergains but Kerim is away on holiday and I ma roasting in the car so I am keen on getting it done ASAP

Michaelb
It should tell you what gas they used on a label under the bonnet...
I think you should be ok cos they changed it in 1995 to meet the new regulations, so you should be running R134A in which case you can pretty much go to anyone... Make sure they do a full vacuum and pressure of the system first tho....
I would prob still go to a specialist tho mate :)

Should be near the paint code, which is near the bonnet latch and tells you about the oils and lubricants you need, assuming you have the standard original bonnet that is lol...

…just had a look, nothing on the bonnet, by the driver’s door I have a sticker with the paint code and something which says vehicle line CF1, is that it?
Bonnet looks stock, but the top of it is covered with a black mash…

Dunno then mate, but being as it\'s a 96 it\'s unlikely to br R12 as R12 was banned in 1994 due to it\'s harmful CFC gases to the ozone...

According to the aircon dude who regassed mine, the earlier gas was much better, did a far better job of lubricating and protecting the system than the new stuff. Just one more example of how \'progress\' means pandering to the Green lobby and ending up with something that\'s worse at doing its job than before. Unless he was telling me a load of b*ll*cks in which case ignore the last mini-rant. Re-gassing didn\'t help on mine anyway, the clutch in the compressor seems to be fduked, so it doesn\'t engage, just blows hot air anyway. Annoying, now that I\'ve got £70 worth of new gas wafting around the system doing nowt! Hey ho, one more thing to sort out!
I try to convince myself that winding down the windows works fine, but it really just doesn\'t!
