Title: Some pics of my car!
Post by: FDDreamer on May 09, 2008, 02:06:38 PM
Well at long last I’ve managed to get a few pics taken of my little FB. These were taken last weekend, and although I had the best intentions of washing and waxing the car, the inclement British weather caught me out and I was only able to wash her instead. Well actually it was my brother who did all the work, so thanks to him!

As it started raining the second we’d finished washing the car I didn’t even have time to take her for a little drive to a nicer shoot location – hence the pics being in a friend’s car park!

With any luck I will get some better shots this weekend, after a full waxing session. I’m also going to attempt to record a couple of short vids to capture the sound. Still, at least I have some pictures of her now!

Still loving the car, I am quite concerned about the fuel tank (it is reported to have small holes at the top) after hearing an incident a friend suffered with a similar problem (suffice to say it involved flames and burnt-out cars) and so only drive it sparingly. But once I get that replacement tank I’ll be able to really get out there and enjoy it! Even the exhaust has grown on me (I wasn’t too keen at first as it’s just so loud!) as I’ve found that at around 2000rpm there is a quiet part in the rev range, and listening to it you would swear there was a big engine under the bonnet.

Anyway, all comments welcomed – I realise this car isn’t to everyone’s taste, but personally I really like it. Takes the already-unique FB to an even more unusual level (no-one knows what it is!) without looking too jumped-up. I hope. Now, anyone know where I can get a ‘Knight Industries’ badge and a certain sort of horizontal, red LED? :chat

If everything works there should be one picture below then a series of links to the rest.

I was thinking hard about this car, when it was for sale. It looks stunning, but I just dont have the coin to do the 400 mile a week work slog in it. Shame!!! but glad its gone to a good home :)

Thanks for the comments guys!

We spent a couple of hours with the sponge, it came up really well though so I can only assume the previous owner also cherished her. Unfortunately she was keyed the day before I collected her (typical!) and I\'ve not got the funds to have it rectified at the mo (it goes from the front wing all the way down the door and onto the rear), although it is mostly a light scratch and so doesn\'t show up too much. Only changes I\'ve made so far are to spray the mesh at the front black (it was silver previously and highlighted the fact there was nothing behind it!) which improved the front a bit imho, and I replaced the Honda Type-R badges with the Mazdaspeed ones you can see in the pictures. They go with the black/silver theme quite well I think. Too bad the holes under the badges are wonky - as this means the badges too are slightly out too, but it\'s not a big probem.

Engine wise she is more or less standard I believe. It was rebuilt in 2002 (around 17,000 miles ago i think) and the previous owner explained some parts were later-spec, but I don\'t think they are any more performance-oriented. I am thinking about the Weber 45 Mark has up for grabs, but the fuel tank is the number 1 priority and prices for those are a bit scary!

From the sound of it you\'ll be grateful you didn\'t plump for this one, G@ndy, as currently I am averaging around 12-14mpg - and that is mainly sensible driving! It seems the fuel is actually evaporating (I guess the weather doesn\'t help?) and so the economy is not the best. If you put your foot down you can pretty much see the gauge dropping in real time!! But as I commute and use her weekends only it isn\'t too bad. I guess.

In fairness it may well have returned around that figure on average, as I think he drove it for long distances at a time and probably relatively \'nicely\'. On the other hand I have been using it for shorter trips and because it\'s always stone cold when I get in it the good old choke\'s been out a fair bit as well, which won\'t help the consumption much! Factor in the disappearing fuel problem and I guess it\'s easy to see where the fuel goes.

I think it\'s also running quite rich, didn\'t notice until the other day when I stood behind the car as it was idling, but there was a definite smell of fuel. Quite a strong one too!

When I get the new tank I\'m hoping for around 25-30mpg on average, does that sound about right?

Sounds like a plan. Right now I\'m only topping her up to around halfway, hoping that will mitigate the losses to a point!

I heard you guys talking about Donnington but didn\'t make any plans as I\'m too skint right now to consider such a jaunt! Once the tank is replaced and I have a bit more time off work it\'ll be excellent to come and say hi!

Thanks for the comments guys. It\'s such a great car to drive, might be pretty slow by modern standards but it really is unique and feels like an event every time i get in. And not even because of the warm-up routine! :-)  after re-working the economy i\'m now on around 16mpg, still not great but a slight improvement. Looking forward to getting the new tank on it next month, hopefully that\'ll help things.
In terms of the seats, they were fitted by a previous owner. All i can say is they\'re a snug fit! :-) the wheels are indeed 17", the fronts are 7" wide and the rears are 9". I\'d like to lower the car slightly, think that would really set it off, but not too sure if it would cause some rubbing issues.
In terms of the FD thing, it hasn\'t gone away, but i think it will probably need to wait for awhile. It\'s nice to have aspirations and the FB is good practice. Even with its modest power it\'s still plenty of fun in the wet!
